This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of the clans from their beginnings to the present day activities of contemporary clan societies. The author describes the early clan system and follows the story through the various strifes between the clans, the Jacobite rebellions, the emigration period to the revival of interest and prosperity in the Highlands and the development of contemporary clan societies. A separate chapter is devoted to the story of tartan and its links with the clans.
Robert William Munro wrote on Hebridean and West Highland history and topography, and on his own Ross-shire clan and others. His books include an edition of Donald Munro's Description of the Western Isles, Kinsmen and Clansmen, Highland Clans and Tartans, and (with his wife) Tain through the Centuries.
