Shelves: classics
This was so much of fun to read to my children. There were fantastic illustrations by Potter in each story to keep them engaged, even if perhaps some of the adult phrasing and word choices from the era seemed foreign to them. Many of the stories demonstrate characters' strengths and missteps. The book also shows them getting their comeuppance or in some cases even getting reprimand in the form of spanking, which is also telling of the time in which these were written. I seem to have escaped childhood without reading a few stories in here ... Of course Peter, Benjamin, Squirrel Nutkin, Jemima are all familiar and well-loved. But, Timmy Tiptoes? Maybe I was tired at our most recent bed-time reading, but I felt like it was Hunter S. Thompson meets woodland critters ... that one is weird! Lover her original illustrations, though.
