About the author

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

As a child I loved to draw-but I also loved books, especially picture books. I still remember certain illustrations, covers and bindings from books that were read to me as a young girl.
I’ve lived in many places: I grew up in Wantagh on Long Island, N.Y., graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts and attended St. Lawrence University in upstate New York.

At the University of Wisconsin in Madison, I majored in fine art and learned how to design, print and bind handmade books. I also took courses in Children’s Literature. The combination of form and content in the picture book format fascinated me and after graduation I headed for NYC where I worked for 17 years in children’s book publishing as a designer and art director. But I didn’t begin to write until I had children of my own.

My books have been published in many countries and in many different languages. You can find my books in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Germany. Some of my books have been translated into German, French, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Tswana, Sesotho, and Zulu!

Jake the baker makes a cake for a wedding that is happening in town. This story tells the details of the preparation for the wedding. For example, Mrs. King sang, the preacher conducted the ceremony and the bride and groom say their I do's. At the end, after they said their I do's, they all ate the elaborate cake and Jake the baker was very proud. This is a good book to teach students about rhyming words as well as alliteration. This book would be a great book for beginner readers because the text is short ( one sentence per page). This book has very detailed pictures and uses "wedding language" which is a good way to introduce students to vocabulary words they are not familiar with. This book is also great for teaching students the writers craft of repetition. The book somewhat reminds me of a poem where a particular line repeats itself to stress the importance of it. For example, the author repeats the line, "Jake baked the cake." Overall, this is a great book to have in the classroom!

There is a wedding in town and everyone plays an important part in helping out for the big day. Jake is the baker and it is his job to bake a tremendous wedding cake. All throughout the day people are hustling and bustling, but Jake stays in his kitchen and bakes, bakes, bakes. Even during the ceremony Jake is baking away. Finally after the wedding he presents the bride and groom with a wonderful cake!

A nice, simple story about everyone in a town preparing for a wedding. This would be a good choice to read to a kiddo about to be a flower girl/ring bearer for the first time. The illustrations have lots of fun detail to look at, and the simple, somewhat repetitive and rhyming text has a nice rhythm.
