I have been very pleased with this field guide. The photos and descriptions are very helpful for various identifications in the field, and it is also handy for studying at home before and after birding.

The taxonomical order is a bit weird, there are a few deceptive drawings, and the guide is prone to focus on traditional identifiers like plumage that can lead novice birders down the wrong path. These two criticisms are common among field guides, so I am still pretty happy with this one.

The cover and pages are designed to handle wear and tear, including exposure to moisture, so it has help up riding in my bag on birding outings that have included getting caught in the rain. The Eastern book is also a good size for carrying with you in the field (the book for all of North America is a bit heavy).

Exceptional book for birding identification! Very beginner friendly, while also covering subspecies & migratory locations.

I think this guide has the best artistic bird renderings out of any of the others I have read as well. I am normally a fan of only guides with high quality photographs, but I enjoy the details of depiction in this guide so much more than photography. Hats off!
