I think this is a good short story to read if you want to dip your toe into the summoner world and get a feel for the type of racism that the humans have toward the dwarves. It also gives you a pretty quick background on Othello and his view on the world. You can get all the same information by reading the actual novels, but if you're a big summoner fan like I am, you might as well read it because it's super short and free!
This is the story of Othello- a dwarves who is fast dwarves Summoner and offer a place in King Army. This story take place after when Othello pass test to become a summoner for leaving he is dwarves quarter to attend vocans Academy.
A really well written and descriptive short story that portrays the character,Othello's, thoughts and insights/viewpoints in great clarity and with equally great co-allition with the time line of the story; with it being able to lead straight into "The Summoner Book 1: The Novice". However I wouldn't read it expecting a large storyline and addition to the plot, as this is one in Taran Matharu's short story series, and, as such is only written so as the readers and fans can have further insight into the characters pasts and motivations (as was done with "The Summoner: Origins- with Arcturus, and in "The Summoner: Rory- with...Rory :) But, despite this, this story- for what it is- is very well written and more that enough to tide me over for the next book (as well as to fuel the hype!). Well done Taran!
Othello is a young summoner on his way to see the King to become a citizen. The coach he's waiting for is driven by an extremely grumpy racist man, who doesn't believe that a dwarf could possibly be a summoner. He questions where his demon is, and only agree to take him when Othello pays him extra. He then warns him not to try to pinch his rotting potatoes! Othello does eventually get to where he was supposed to be going, but not without the racist driver pushing him from the cart.
I needed a short story for a readathon and found this one on my Kindle. It is a short story about Othello, a Dwarf that finds out he is a Summoner and is headed to the Academy to learn. It is only 10 pages long, but I am hooked and want to read more about Othello’s journey and the world he lives in.
This was very short and not much happened. I would have just included this at the end of one of the books in the Summoners series (maybe the Novice?). It was free though, so the short length (less than 10 pages in the B&N ebook) didn't matter too much.
A itty bitty start to the series on Othello's point of view and the class racism that exist against dwarfs in the series. Just a couple of pages that take maybe 5 to 10 minutes to read.
3.5 stars. It was so short! But very well written and I am bumping The Novice up on the list because of it; this was my introduction to the world, and I am excited to see what it's about!
As well written as the other ones. I'd recommend this series to anyone who likes a good fantasy book. And I love when authors are thoughtful and release small treats to fans that are waiting for the next sequel.
The writing in Othello's Journey is well done, which accounts for the four stars. I wouldn't say this is a short story, but more a scene. Interesting to read, but didn't give a lot of insight,
