Kollwitz's art was done mostly in posters and woodcuts after deciding that painting was not her strong point. Thus the art shown in this book is entirely black and white images. Many are very dark and the overall theme is the struggle of the working class to survive in the 1890-1930 time frame depicted.
Hinz does a good introduction and explanation of the background behind many of the images and there is a chronological listing of high points in the artist's life. Still, it would be good to have a little more background on some of the art and the artist's life.
Kathe Kollwitz stated: "I have never worked coolly but always, as it were, with my blood." Her work is powerful, both technically and emotionally! It portrays the blood, sweat and tears of the working class. I love the advice her father gave her: "Be what you have chosen to be with all your heart." And that she lived by her grandfathers motto: "Talent is a responsibility."
