Essays tracing the intellectual life of a quintessential New York City writer and thinker
Marshall Berman was one of the great urbanists and Marxist cultural critics of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and his brilliant, nearly sui generis book "All That Is Solid Melts Into Air" is a masterpiece of the literature on modernism. But like many New York intellectuals,

Really wonderful collection of bits of Berman's work from his entire scope of writing. It really struck me how amazingly accessible and interesting his writing was, even though he had a position as a professor. For those who want a "warmer" Marxism, Berman is your man. Although he never really had much to say about actual organizing, Berman's insights on urban life and public space remain a welcome respite from the usual stereotype ...more

Modernism in the Streets brings together some of the finest essays for philosopher Marshall Berman's work. A self-described Marxist Humanist, Berman brings a point-of-view typically not found in more popular mainstream writings.

Berman knows his way around the writer's pen and is able to craft some excellent essays in this collection. I particularly enjoyed his essay about Robert Moses and his thoughts on the issue of displacement.

Definitely worth picking up if you're looking for something differ
