It looks like you’re never going to be a mother. So now what? I especially appreciated the sections on grief. It is something that is so personal and difficult to deal with. I liked the idea of having some kind of ceremony as a symbolic way to help find closure. Reading this section helped me proces

Back in 2001, the difficult decision I made to stop infertility treatments was compounded by the sad lack of supportive resources on the subject of how to face the future without the children you'd assumed you'd have. Most of the infertility books in my collection contained no more than a page or two on the subject. There were a handful of books specifically about life without children -- many of them out of print and difficult to find. Many of the resources I found were aimed more at childfree ...more

Surviving and thriving when motherhood doesn't happen seems, for many women and men who are involuntarily without children, an impossible task. Lisa Manterfield has written a book that guides the reader through the major issues and stages of first surviving, then thriving, this situation. Kindly and gently she will let you know that you are not alone. Then she moves to practical, helpful exercises and suggestions that will help you move through this process, at your own pace, and in a way that i ...more

I’m Lisa Manterfield and I love telling stories.

I’m a curious cat and I’m fascinated by human behavior and what makes people tick.

I love fish-out-of-water stories of ordinary people in extraordinary situations, especially if those situations delve into the unexplained.

I love digging up nuggets of history—not the vast sweeping stories of events that changed the world, but the personal stories of pe
