Blackwood was born in Shooter's Hill (today part of south-east London, but then part of northwest Kent) and educated at Wellington College. His father was a Post Office administrator who, according to Peter Penzoldt, "though not devoid of genuine good-heartedness, had appallingly narrow religious ideas." Blackwood had a varied career, farming in Canada, operating a hotel, as a newspaper reporter in New York City, and, throughout his adult life, an occasional essayist for various periodicals. In his late thirties, he moved back to England and started to write stories of the supernatural. He was very successful, writing at least ten original collections of short stories and eventually appearing on both radio and television to tell them. He also wrote fourteen novels, several children's books, and a number of plays, most of which were produced but not published. He was an avid lover of nature and the outdoors, and many of his stories reflect this.
H.P. Lovecraft wrote of Blackwood: "He is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere." His powerful story "The Willows," which effectively describes another dimension impinging upon our own, was reckoned by Lovecraft to be not only "foremost of all" Blackwood's tales but the best "weird tale" of all time.
Among his thirty-odd books, Blackwood wrote a series of stories and short novels published as John Silence, Physician Extraordinary (1908), which featured a "psychic detective" who combined the skills of a Sherlock Holmes and a psychic medium. Blackwood also wrote light fantasy and juvenile books.

نجمتان للترجمة التي جاءت ضبابية مفككة في أغلب مواضعها لا تفهم معها عم يتحدث الراوي (هابارد) صديق الطبيب الفذ المحقق جون سايلنس
ونجمة واحدة فقط لإخراج الكتاب الذي كثرت به الأخطاء الإملائية وانتهى بأربع صفحات مقلوبة ... اضطررت لقلب الكتاب وإمساكه كما لو كان كتابا بلغة أجنبية لأقرأ التتمة
القصة صدرت في حدود العام ١٩٠٨ مع باقي قضايا جون سايلنس وأنا متأكدة أنها كانت صادمة ومخيفة إلى حد كبير ... إن تحدثت عن تفاصيلها قد أحرق الحبكة
لا أعلم هل جعلت الترجمة من وصف هابارد (المعادل لواتسون في ألغاز شيرلوك هولمز) لمشاعره تجاه كل من الطبيب والكولونيل والكينونة الحاضرة شيئا لزجا كهذا الذي قرأت أم أن نفس الإحساس انتاب القراء الذين قرأوها بالإنجليزية

A supernatural mystery featuring John Silence, psychic investigator. This case involves the random appearance of smoke and spontaneous fires in and around an English manor house. The writing is very atmospheric and the supernatural element is something a bit different.

Doctor John Silence deals with a fiery mystery in this novella. Amidst lots of descriptions and befuddling sentences, gently a web of atmospheric horror gets spun around us. Slowly we realise that Silence and his various psychic activities are only being used as a veil. Actually the author has addressed a very serious issue with surprising nuances, while terrifying the readers with a narrative full of slow-burning horror.
Definitely readable. Certainly enjoyable.

قصة بسيطة رائعة بها الكثير من علم المصريات وعلوم ما وراء الطبيعة و لكنها قليلة الأحداث بالنسبة للأسلوب فالقصة أسلوبها سهل و يمكن قراءتها في جلسة واحدة بسهولة.

الجزء الثالث من سلسلة قضايا د. جون سايلنس، شخصية مُتخيلة من نَسج المؤلف الإنجليزي "ألجيرنون بلاكوود". صدرت لأول مرة في 2004، أما النسخة العربية فقد نُشِرَت عن دار الخان في 2020 من 148 صفحة، لـ "جورج نبيل". وقائع متعاقبة تدور في حيِّزين مكانِيَيْن يشتركان في المحيط الجغرافي، تقود محاولات إيجاد تفسير لها إلى اكتشاف أسرار تنتمي جذورها إلى زمن آخر وبلد آخر!
تصل مختص في علم الماورائيات دعوة من كولونيل متقاعد للتحقيق في ظواهر غريبة تحدث في منزله ومزرعة تمثل امتداداً له بشكل ما. حرائق غامضة وطيور لا تحط هناك، وكلاب تلاحق كائن غير مرئي! وفي الداخل، مستوى مزعج من السخونة يبقَ عالقاً في الأشياء وإن أُبعِدَت!
عنصر "الغموض" في السرد، وعملية إخراج المشاهد الموسومة بالعناية الفائقة بالتفاصيل، يضفيان على النص جو من ملامح إصدارات "ستيفن كينغ". واتسمت استراتيجية تفكيك خيوط اللغز بصبغة منطقية، منهجية تشبه ما يتبناه الروائي "عبد الوهاب السيد الرفاعي" في جُل نتاجه الأدبي.
للمؤلف مخيلة خصبة وقد أظهر المترجم حرفية عالية في إبرازها، فاحتفظ النص بمنسوب مرتفع من الجاذبية رغم بطء إيقاع سير الأحداث وتذبذب مؤشر التشويق.
من حيث القيمة، للمضمون الهادف مساحة إلا أنه متوار حيث منطقة نائية خلف السطور، إلى حد قد يتعذر معه الانتباه لوجوده. من صوره، حيلة جدار القوقعة.
قد يمثل الإصدار خيار جيد للمهتمين بمجال الرعب والميتافيزيقيا والفنتازيا، سيما فئة المبتدئين من بينهم.

Niente affatto male questo racconto di Blackwood in cui c'è decisamente più azione ed avventura rispetto ai precedenti che ho letto. Rimane imbattibile o quasi nella creazione dell'atmosfera, ma quando giunge il climax questo è solo la prima parte, preludio di un successivo e più significativo vertice, preceduto da una discreta dose di avventura.
Mi è piaciuto parecchio anche nel collegamento con l'antico Egitto e con la pessima abitudine descritta, che riflette bene quello che accadeva in quei decenni.

Another will written fantasy horror haunting adventure thriller by Algernon Blackwood about fires occuring around a manor. I recommend this novella and author to readers of fantasy horror. Enjoy the adventure of books. 2022

Simple and elegant in it's prose, clear and direct in it's storytelling, vivid and arresting in it's horror. Occult Sherlock Holmes that starts as a simple weird haunting and builds to an insane reveal.

The book is amazing and the story it talks about is wonderful. When I went to an exhibition in Qatar, it caught my attention so I bought it and read it. But I didn't get the second and third parts because the exhibition ended. The book is great, but translating it into Arabic was a very bad idea because the original book is in English. Some words were difficult to pronounce to the point that I had to translate them back into English!
If you want to buy this book for reading, it should be in English to make pronouncing the words easier.
