A volume of four terrifyingly witty novellas. Skin & Poor Taichi is bullied incessantly at school because of her weight problem, but she undertakes a diet from hell, which leaves her nothing more than skin and bone. The Red Haruna's deathly appearance shocks her friends when she returns to school. She disappears again, leaving only her red school satchel and its gruesome contents. Two Young, beautiful Ms. Numata is a popluar teacher, but her outer appearance hides a ghastly truth she has kept secret since birth. No one can understand Mayuko's obsession with caterpillars, but everyone at school hates her for it. She is bullied relentlessly, but knows that her destiny lies in a different place.
Hideshi Hino (日野日出志 Hino Hideshi, born April 19, 1946) is a Japanese manga artist who specializes in horror stories. His comics include Hell Baby, Hino Horrors, and Panorama of Hell. He also wrote and directed two of the Guinea Pig horror movies which were based on his manga: Flower of Flesh and Blood, which he also starred in, and Mermaid in a Manhole.
While I keep repeating that Hideshi Hino's work is something I'm still trying to teach myself to really appreciate, I'm obviously on a bit of a kick of it at the moment, having found a bunch of Hino Horror books at the library. While Lullabies from Hell is probably the best I've read so far, this one has some classic stories, and is maybe even more body horror-focused than most of the rest of the Hino volumes I've thus far encountered.
Thanks to my personal infatuation with skeletons and living skeleton stories, I'm particularly fond of the semi-titular "Skin and Bone," which may have the distinction of being my favorite Hino story thus far.
'Caterpillar' is so tragic, so beautiful. I love Hideshi Hino's style. Kind of cartoonish, a bit of German Expressionism, some body horror. His stories are so much about the fear of abandonment, longing for a space in the world, feeling like an outsider. My heart aches, I laugh, I'm mortified. The range makes for a very engrossing read, like modern folk tales or twisted children's stories.
hino has been poorly served in english by largely being represented by these weaker volumes, which seemingly outweigh his really weighty stuff. but what happened? did he simply get subsumed into the meatgrinder of manga publication schedules?
