Scilly Birding is a humorous account of the passion, joys, highs and lows experienced by a dedicated bird enthusiast in his pursuit of an experience with rare birds on the Isles of Scilly for a fortnight.
Whenever I give something two stars it feels a bit harsh, but 'it was ok' sums this up really.
I guess there are two main ways to write up the 'scilly season' autumn birding, as a comic narrative or as an insight into the psychology of keen twitchers. From the cover it's clear Simon is going down the latter route primarily, but it's just not that engaging and the stories aren't that funny. It's the kind of stuff that would make a slide show at a local bird club meeting but there isn't enough there for a decent book.
