FBI Special Agent, Cam Wittier, rushes to the tinsel town in LA where the Starlet Slasher's serial killings are haunting the hell out of each and every actress in this town and she must find this deadly serial killer who has already taken the lives of five actresses while also stealing their laptops and mobiles. But when a sixth actress falls prey to this killer, it becomes obvious that someone closer to these actresses might be involved behind the killings. Little did she knew that it would become highly life threatening for her as well as for her friends too.
This is the first time, that I read any book by this author, and it seems I clearly did a mistake in finding out about this author's works so late, as this is the twentieth book in the series. I know some people, including me, feel that FBI thrillers are predictable and not that exciting enough to make them feel edgy, and I've rarely came across a FBI thriller which left me intrigued at each and every turn of the page. I must say this author is a genius whose imagination, thorough research and insight into the events happening behind the closed doors of FBI offices and creativity as well as cleverness in developing the plot is fantastic and flawless.
From the very first page itself, the story, or rather say the two parallel mysteries are extremely riveting enough to peak the readers' interest to stay glued to the book. The author's writing style is very polished and articulate laced with enough suspense and tension. The narrative as well as the voices of the characters are arresting as well as free-flowing enough to keep the readers hooked to the story line. The pacing is bit slow in the beginning as the author pens the story with so much descriptions and backstories to support her plot but eventually, the book picks up speed and near the end, the readers will be bound to turn the pages of the book frantically to learn about the killers' identity.
The author has build the suspense layer-by-layer and page-by-page hence the readers' anticipation will increase gradually with the progress of the story. The mystery has a lot of dimensions and the twists will challenge the readers at every turn of the page which are not only unpredictable but are also thrilling. The whole book as well as the mystery is one hell of a roller-coaster ride filled with adrenaline-rushing action scenes and with some tense moments that are depicted vividly.
The characters are very much well-developed and highly inspired from real-life characters. Although the book is in a series, yet it doesn't turn out to be difficult for the readers to comprehend with the characters which are already introduced in the previous books. Each and every character are laced with their back story to understand them better. They FBI agents, all three of them, are not only sounds genuine with their equally honest demeanor but are brave, strong and determined. The rest of the supporting characters are also well carved out that will interest the readers deeply.
In a nutshell, this compelling as well as highly absorbing story is a must read for all crime fiction fans and no to mention the rush that the readers are bound to feel while reading this book.
Verdict: A thriller that certainly can't be missed which is packed tightly with drama, action and suspense.

There are not many worse plots than rich family squabbles as a basis for this novel. 2 of 10 stars

Catherine Coulter has written yet another well-paced, interesting thriller, this time where FBI agents Shepard and Savich are trying to figure out which family member of an elderly businesswoman is trying to poison her and steal her money and corporate fortunes, while Cam is off in LA tracking a serial killer. I like her writing because it's detailed enough without ever getting super gory. We're parceled out information at a steady rate as the detectives work to solve the case and the twists just keep coming. A great read. 4.5/5 stars.

Insidious (FBI Thriller Series #20) by Catherine Coulter is an okay read. I liked it but just felt it could have been so much better.
There are two mysteries happening at the same time......Savich and Sherlock are looking into the possible poisoning of one of his grandmother's old friends and FBI Agent Cam Wittier and Detective Daniel are working together in California trying to track down a vicious serial killer that is killing young and beautiful movie stars.
There are some good parts.....loved the interaction between Savich, Sherlock and their cute little son!!!! Brought a smile to my face.
The plot is well paced and keeps you guessing most of the time. What I do miss in this series is the lack of romance between the characters. It's become more of a mystery/suspense genre than romantic suspense.
But saying that....I still enjoy the series.

Insidious was below par. It didn't pull me in. I didn't feel the novel. It was disjointed and it didn't flow properly.

Insidious by Catherine Coulter is a 2016 Gallery Books publication. I was provided a copy of this book as an XOXpert the official street team of XOXO After Dark, and Edelweiss.
This twentieth installment in Catherine Coulter’s FBI series takes on two separate cases, one featuring the popular husband and wife team, Savich and Sherlock, who must determine who is trying to kill an elderly socialite and an up and coming FBI superstar, Cam Whittier, takes on a serial killer in Los Angles who is targeting beautiful actresses.
With this book, the reader gets two full stories in one book, both of which are compelling with surprising twists and turns. Savich and Sherlock have a puzzling case in which it seems a family member is responsible for trying to kill their own grandmother. The suspects range from the heir apparent to the black sheep of the family who has recently become a prodigal son, returning to the nest after pulling his life back together.
Cam comes up against opposition in L.A. due to the FBI’s involvement, which has put some members of the LAPD on the defensive, but she handles herself with aplomb. However, the tension thickens when another murder takes place, and it looks like one of the actresses could have been the victim of a copycat killer.
I readily admit I struggled mightily with the older books in this series. However, the more recent releases have been pretty solid. I think the initial romantic suspense elements have been toned down a little with Savich and Sherlock being married for a little while now and raising a family. So, any new romance comes from secondary characters. In this case, the romance element is fast and furious, but lacks emotional connection, but did play a key part in the story.
While I love romantic suspense, it stands to reason that this series has evolved into more of a standard mystery thriller format, which is fine by me, since the storylines are firmer, and the characters have room to develop more as crime solvers. As a result, the crime stories are more complex and interesting. I am also enjoying the addition of new characters and side stories that help keep the series fresh.
I liked Cam a lot and hope to see her in future installments, and of course the trademark banter between Savich and Sherlock was entertaining, with their dialogue a little sharper this go around, giving me a few chuckles.
While the popularity of this series once left me scratching my head, the last several installments showed me why this series is so well received and has such a loyal following.
Overall, this is a pretty solid thriller and I like Savich and Sherlock working in concert, while allowing the spotlight to shine on other characters who get their very own crime to solve. While the author has employed this concept in previous installments, I still found this to be a unique approach and I thought it worked out quite well.

I know some readers will disagree but I was so relieved that this book broke just a bit from the more recent formula. You know, Sherlock and Savich bring in a new investigator who falls in love with someone (usually on the team), there's paranormal, crazy-pants antics and everyone ends up with an HEA. Some of that happens in "Insidious," but it's not the absolute same well-worn path.
Sherlock and Savich are called in when Venus Rasmussen, famous eighty-year-old billionaire entrepreneur, suspects that she's being poisoned by one of her family members. We get to meet all of the family members, including the black sheep who has some insta-love of his own with Delsey, a character we met in a previous FBI Thriller.
There is, of course, a B story with Special Agent Cam Wittier who is traveling to Los Angeles to help deal with a serial killer who has been slicing the throat of young actresses.
I'm really hoping that we get to see more of Cam Wittier and a bit more of Coulter straying just a bit from the FBI Thriller formula that was starting to get a bit tedious.

It's so difficult to give up on C.C. because seeing her name on a book cover reminds me of hours of reading pleasure of her back list (up to Split Second and not including her early historical where Graelam(?) the rapist in one book is the "hero" in a subsequent title). During the peak of her writing prowess, splurging to buy her new releases asap because waiting for a library copy was too torturous for my need to read C.C.'s latest emotional roller coaster. Donating them to my public library branch's bookstore mitigated any feelings of guilt for the purchases.
Now there's this persistent flatness to the characterizations and an absence of interpersonal chemistry. Since these elements were previously two of her greatest storytelling strengths among a long list of traits in her writing allure, the lack of them significantly impacts my reading experience.
This change feels different from an artist's evolution in style and focus.

I’ve enjoyed this series featuring Savitch/Sherlock partners in life and in work, both in law enforcement, FBI. However I found this one lacking the suspense that Coulter’s thrillers usually provide. This was a two-plot novel.
1) Someone is poisoning an elderly wealthy lady who was Savitch’s mothers friend. He and Sherlock come to her aid in discovering the culprit and motive.
2) Budding actresses are being slain by a serial slasher — who and why?
Eventually the cases are resolved, although the slasher plot line got a bit convoluted at the end. The twists and turns were a bit unexpected but finally we were getting some action which made it worth the read. Not Coulter’s best in the series, IMHO. It took me longer than usual to finish it, but other series fans apparently disagree with me, as most are 4/5 star ratings.

My re-read review stands from my first read. This was a goodie! There are two separate investigations going on with two separate teams and, yet, you have no problem at all following both. With other authors I can figure out who the murderer(s) is/are well before the book ends. I am always stumped and surprised with Catherine Coulter's FBI Thrillers and I love that. I never saw either of those endings to the murders coming.

It sounds a little odd to say a thriller is comfort food but that's exactly what this book was, and the series as a whole is. I know exactly what I'm getting, I know I'll like the story, and I know it will be a an entertaining read. Coulter doesn't break any new ground with this story, sticking to her series formula but with some minor changes. There are two mysteries and they both kept me guessing. Each had twists and red herrings and I didn't succeed in solving either of the mysteries. The stories were clever and the characters interesting, a good mix of likable and unlikable. There were a few convenient coincidences but otherwise the stories are tightly written.
In the first mystery, which involves Savich and Sherlock, we meet Venus, a firecracker of a woman who is being poisoned and she's afraid it's a family member. It's not strictly speaking a FBI problem but Venus is an old friend of Savich's so he and Sherlock use their power in the FBI to help. Familial relationships and entanglements are deftly portrayed and Coulter surprises us a few times with characterization.
The second mystery, which is unrelated, takes place on the West Coast and introduces new characters, FBI agent Cam Whittier and local police detective Daniel Montoya. They work well together but even so, more actresses die before they find the killer.
There were a few minor irritations - Coulter apparently doesn't know that when you call 911 on your cell phone it doesn't go through to the local police station nor does the caller's address show up at dispatch. Additionally, several characters had names of actresses from the 30s and 40s, which was odd. True enough, they're out in Hollywood but it was an annoying affectation.
"Insidious" was thrilling, engaging, and like curling up with old friends. Despite the fact it's the 20th book in the series, you could start with only a little confusion. Pick up a copy; you won't be sorry.

Dillon Savich & Lacey Sherlock, husband and wife FBI agents have again met the challenge, but not without losing several beautiful, young aspiring actresses. There are many serial suspects with primary investigative focus on doctors, movie producers and a putzy stalker who is enamored with one of the female targets. While this investigation is going on, there is another story within this story.
Within a wealthy and powerful societal family, someone has attempted to murder Venus Rasmussen, the 86 year young matriarch and keeper of the keys of their decades old conglomerate. Could this be an inside attempt, in other words within the family's inner circle?
The stories unfold with many mild surprises but I did have one killer pegged relatively early. Probably a lucky guess because there is so much happening within CC's FBI Thriller series, one may need a bit more concentration to follow clearly.
No complaints here....yes, there is too much steamy behavior for my liking, but what the hell, sex, murder and rock n' roll will never die...enjoy.

Catherine Coulter's INSIDIOUS is fast moving mystery thriller with surprises on every page. The storyline comes alive as if readers are watching a motion picture. Her characters are well developed and believable. Coulter's unbelievable ending will give her readers goosebumps.

Insidious is Coulter’s 20th FBI thriller, and she knows her stuff quite well by now, and this shines in her writing. Insidious again features Coulter’s staple FBI agents, an inseparable team, Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock, who are now married. However, there is an interesting twist to this Catherine Coulter novel. Insidious is a dual-case murder thriller. Savich and Sherlock were to leave for the West Coast, but someone has made an attempt on the life of the corporate head, and a dear and very wealthy family friend of the Savich family, Venus Rasmussen. Agent Cam Wittier leaves Washington for Los Angeles to work a case with Detective David Montoya and other local law enforcement agencies.
Savich and Sherlock get down to the business of solving the crime of who is trying to kill Venus and why? Moreover, why is her grandson, Alexander being framed for the attempts? And, why has the other grandson, Rob entered back into the picture after a ten year absence?
Meanwhile, Cam Wittier is in Santa Monica co-ordinating with several law enforcement agencies to bring in the who the media has dubbed the Starlet Slasher, a serial killer with five actresses to his credit to date. This situation needs to be handled quickly and efficiently. The city is edgy.
Coulter does what she has to with characterization and she does it sparingly, yet well. (Sometimes I have trouble getting behind her Savich and Sherlock characters.) Her plots and storylines are very good once again, something that I have found in all of the Coulter novels that I have read. The idea of having two cases going on at once works very well with diverting the reader’s attention while keeping their attention and not wanting to put the book down. This gives one the feeling of drinking too much coffee too late and then picking up an exciting book and getting all jittery. The only criticism that I could really have is that at first the book had too much of a “Murder She Wrote” feel like she knew someone that knew someone. What was it that George Thorogood once said, “I met a German girl from England that was going to school in France. It was Jackson, Mississippi at an Alpha Kappa dance. It wasn’t me…” Sorry, couldn’t resist. Anyway, Coulter quickly puts this notion to rest and it is forever out of my mind. The only other thing that is even close to resembling a criticism is actually a compliment. Insidious is a very good FBI thriller. I read several of Coulter’s early FBI thriller books including The Maze and The Cove, and they were fabulous. This, IMHO, is unfortunate for Coulter, who is a better writer than that, but hey, Dylan can’t write a hit song like “Like a Rolling Stone” every ten years, either.
If one is into FBI thrillers and psychological thrillers, Insidious might just be a very good choice. I surely did enjoy Insidious, and I hope that many others will do the same. I give this one a 3.8 stars. Thanks again, Mackenzie.

What a thrilling novel! I love this FBI series by Catherine Coulter. It has yet to get old. Saving and Sherlock are on yet another case for a family friend whom is being poisoned will they figure out who it is before they die? Read to find out. Saviches teammate is on the west cost trying to find the Starlit Slasher, a serial killer killing beautiful actresses...how tragic! Cam teams up with Daniel Montoya to break through this case. Many dips and twists I was intrigued throughout the story. So glad the next in the series will be out soon! Happy reading!

Insidious is a smart and calculated thriller that will lure you in with serial killers and murderous plots. Then keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing whodunit until the very last page.
In the twentieth installment of Coulter’s FBI Thriller series, the reader gets two mysteries in one. Agents Savich and Sherlock are on the hunt for the person who is trying to murder a powerful matriarch of the Rasmussen family, Venus, and Agent Cam Wittier is brought into the search for a serial killer called the Starlet Slasher. With both stories running parallel to each other, the reader will uncover the secrets that lie within family, friends, and loved ones. But the real questions lie with the agents trying to find out the truth. Will Savich and Sherlock stop the plot to murder Venus? Will Cam be able to stop the serial killer before he take more victims?
I will be honest. I am always up for a good mystery and thriller. Even if I don’t know the author, I am willing to give the book a shot. With Insidious, I took a leap of faith and jumped in. There are so many twist and turns with this book that I couldn’t help but keep flipping the pages. The author knows how to grab you instantly with intrigue and murder, but then keep you invested through the agents solving the mystery as well as the side characters. I loved the off shoots with all the different people involved in each story line. They really made the book even better for me.
For fans of the genre, the scheming, double talk, and red herrings were all present and accounted for. In addition, the plot twists were surprising and marvelously revealed. Coulter brought her A game with this one. All and all, this was a really great read.
Series Note: This is the first book that I have read in the series and I was able to follow the story just fine. So for anyone who is concerned about jumping into the series on the 20th book, don’t be. You will be able to enjoy the ride down the dark and twisty path of this mystery/thriller.

All Books Considered: 2.5 STARS
After 20 books, I am officially breaking up with this series. While this 20th book, Insidious, was better than book 19, either the books have changed or I have changed and that magic that made me look forward to the latest book in this series every summer is gone. I think the series has gone on too long such that it is no longer is fresh and new (kind of running out of ideas). Specifically as to this book, what I really noticed was that all of the law enforcement characters in the book (of which there are a lot -- cops, FBI agents, etc.) had the same exact voice -- the same sense of humor, the same timing. I honestly could barely distinguish a vast majority of the characters in the book. Also, and I noticed this in book 19 as well, the romance is virtually nil. While the suspense has always driven the plot of the books in this series, there was always the great relationship of Savich and Sherlock as well as a revolving potential romance depending on the second story line. In this one, there was just nothing. I was really bored while reading this and I think it's time to move on. I will still cherish the first 15-16 books of this series and I already want to re-read a few of my favorites but this will no longer be an auto/pre-buy for me, and that is definitely sad.

I'm really bummed by this book. It is really hard when an author removes an element from the plot that you have grown to really love. Catherine Coulter is following a trend she set several books back in that she has removed to romance element from her plot. I really miss it and am devastated that it's gone, probably for good. Insidious, as a mystery, is a good book. It delivers on a two front mystery and the characters are well drawn and likeable, but it is so hard to review the book knowing that there could have been so much more. Recent readers should enjoy it. Old-timers, like me, will know that something is missing.

This was #20. There are 22 so far in the "FBI Thriller" series, but somehow I had missed this one. It was really engrossing and fun - Coulter can still keep me glued to the page. Savitch and Sherlock are marvelous as always, and there is a new (to me) agent, Cam Wittier. She is a terrific character - smart and interesting. As usual in this series, there are two plots. One concerns a wealthy woman who seems to be being slowly poisoned by a member of her family. The other, main plot, concerns a serial killer. I had guessed whodunit in one but was surprised by the other. Both were well plotted and each had an exciting and complete denouement and ending, as usual for this author. I was sorry to see it end. Recommended!

Savich and Sherlock, FBI agents, are at work trying to figure out who is trying to poison the matriarch of a powerful family in Washington DC. Agent Cam Wittier is in Malibu on the West Coast chasing a serial killer who targets aspiring actresses. The book goes back and forth between the two mysteries. Frankly it wore me out a little. I liked Cam's story better, lost interest in the family drama and the too cute Savich story. Yes, Venus, the 86 year old is a neat character, but Coulter's habit of changing point of view whenever it suits her bothered me. I like Cam and can see her recurring but wish there had been more attention to giving her a life besides her parents. She needs a lover perhaps. The mysteries get solved so no complaints there, but this book was something of a disappointment. Maybe it's time to move on from the Savich/Sherlock duo and see what else Coulter has in her bag of tricks. I've read her for years and admire her.

I knew this book was part of a series when I chose it but I didn't realise it was book #20! That had me a little worried as I hadn't read the author before and starting a series at the end hardly ever works out. However, I was wrong to worry. For a mystery/thriller, this has a unique style, something more common to TV shows than books. The book contains two distinct and separate cases involving different Agents with only very minimal contact as the lower-ranked Agent occasionally checks in with her boss (who is working the other case). One of the cases is a serial killer thriller and the other is a cosy; someone trying to poison the matriarch of a rich corporate family. The cosy mystery takes place in Washington and was decent and moved along at a slow pace, but had plenty of drama and an ending that kept you guessing who the culprit was. But I really did hate it interrupting the serial killer case as that was much more my style and very fast-paced reading. Taking place in Los Angeles, this was about a killer who went after rising young starlets by quickly slitting their throats then stealing their cell phones and laptops. The solutions of both were a little over-the-top from reality but honestly, that didn't stop them being fun, though there did seem to be some floating threads missing from the conclusions. Overall, I'd like to visit this series again, only starting from the beginning!

Out in Southern California, a serial killer is sneaking into the homes of up and coming young actresses and slashing their throats. He hasn't been caught yet, but Savich sends Agent Cam Whittier out to track him down, taking advantage of her Hollywood connections. She teams up with Detective Daniel Montoya and hooks up with her actress friend, Missy Devereaux, as well as some of the local police and does her damnedest to catch him. Meanwhile, back in Washington, Savich and Sherlock are called to the home of a friend, Venus Rasmussen, an elderly woman with more money than Croesus (and the power to go with it). She insists that someone has poisoned her with Arsenic and after a bit of investigation, turns out she's right. Someone is trying to kill her. They look closely at the family, especially the prodigal grandson, Rob, whose timing with his return puts him under suspicion.
Again, this one wasn't my favorite either. I like that Savich and Sherlock are back together and working side by side, but their case was pretty darn boring actually. It's all family suspicion and drama and it doesn't feel like it warrants the attention of FBI agents (they come in because they're friends of Venus). The only part that got my attention was when Rob Rasmussen met Griffin Hammersmith's sister Delsey and fell for her....and went off and cheated on his girlfriend with her. He'd been with his girlfriend for over six months and they were committed. He sees Delsey and the very next day he's off having marathon sex in a hotel room with her and never bothers to tell her he's in a committed relationship. Rob was a scuzzy, cheating bastard but I guess I'm supposed to look on him as a hero or something...or just someone who made a mistake and shouldn't pay for it. I didn't like him one way or another because he never ONCE thought of the woman he supposedly loved while he's sexing it up with Delsey. And although Delsey is angry once she finds out, she forgives him and takes him back by the epilogue (forgetting that this could be pattern-like behavior, which is evidenced by one of the Hollywood villains).
Now the Hollywood case was more interesting but still a bit of a hot mess. It's got more suspense and definitely seems more FBI-like in nature. Cam was a pretty delightful character and I enjoyed her working alongside Montoya. But I tell you, this author broke formula and didn't have the two leads fall in love as expected. Cam and Montoya certainly had chemistry enough for a friendship, so I figured it would be them. And then out of the frickin blue, Montoya is monologuing about wanting to protect Missy from her stalker and eyeing her up. And I was certainly confused before I realized Cam wasn't getting a romantic interest and Montoya was gonna hook up with Missy. So...okay. Don't see them getting an HEA when he's a 9-5 regular cop and she's planning on breaking into an industry where the good roles are going to the actresses who sleep with producers. And I saw nothing in Missy to indicate that she would be against that - since she and Cam instantly befriended Gloria who was sleeping with her producer for a role. I see Daniel seething with jealousy and Missy pushing him aside when it comes down to a decision over her career or her relationship with him. Call me a pessimist, but that's what I was seeing. I think the whole portrayal of the Hollywood industry and women having to sleep with the men with power in order to get anywhere kinda just depressed me and made me sick. That was the major downside to the that story arc. But the suspense and trying to figure out who killed who was good. Didn't appreciate the lack of closure regarding one of the villains though...
Three more to go in this series. I can complete it.

Really two parallel stories are going on at the same time. In Washington, DC, someone is trying to kill a rich, elderly business icon. On the West Coast a serial killer is targeting beautiful young actresses. Two good mysteries populated with good looking, affluent FBI agents and police officer with much detail to the fashions worn by the characters.

I have read this series from the very beginning and always liked agents Sherlock and Savich. I liked their camaraderie and their often times humor in situations that weren’t particularly humorous. This book…? I’d have to say just so..so. I know it’s book 20 but I’ve read other series that had 40 or more books and they have thus far remained fresh and exciting. This one… not so much. To start with there wasn’t much plot and what plot there was really didn’t make a great deal of sense and the motive was left to the reader’s imagination. The dialog that had in the past been humorous was just silly. I’m not sure if I’ll read the next one or not. I know every author has an occasional let down so perhaps this was the case here. I gave it a 3…for old times sake and a sincere hope of better things to come.

Insidious has parallel storylines running through it. One is to do with Venus Rasmussen, an 86 year old business tycoon, who after a few episodes of bad stomach reactions has determined that she is being poisoned by arsenic. The second storyline involves a serial killer whose victims are Hollywood starlets. Both cases felt like a CSI episode where the experts jump to conclusions that are magically backed up by forensic techniques. Unfortunately, I don't like CSI and this book was not a match for me. Catherine Coulter is a very successful author with a dedicated fan base. This book will be enjoyed by many others.

Received as an ARC from the publisher. At first I felt that the conversations between the police officers were stilted. As a retired Juvenile Court Probation Officer, I knew many detectives and they just didn't talk in that style. The plot of a serial killer targeting young actresses was compelling. There was too much exposition between police officers toward the end; it took pages to explain who the perpetrator was. More action, less talk.
