This is the second book I have read in the True Heroes series, and boy was it great! I have a special place in my heart for a broken vet that finds his way back from the darkness and finds love. David was a perfectly broken hero that quickly captured my heart! I cheered, I yelled, I chuckled, I was happy and I got mad at some points. I started this book and didn't stop until I finished. I couldn't stand to put down David and his demons. Our heroine, Maygan, was a smart, independent and very patient heroine that thankfully didn't have any TSTL moments!
However, David was the character that won my heart in this book. I think the way Ms. Madden took the very tough subject of PTSD and didn't make it go away instantly with love, because it doesn't. I appreciated the fact that she gave the reader the opportunity to watch the pain PTSD can cause, as well as the tough rode to healing, if a person can even heal. Sometimes healing isn't an option, sometimes just coping is the only option.
The story was hot without being crass, it was loving without being over the top, there was pain without an instant solution, it all took time; and for me, made me feel the story so much more. Everything wasn't neat and tidy in just a couple of pages..
So back to my thoughts, David was flawed, he made stupid errors in judgement that had me wanting to throw my phone against a wall (that's the highest compliment when I get so mad I want to hurl my phone, that means I am invested!). Maygan stuck to her guns, she fought for what she wanted, and didn't want...all the while I was investing in this fictional couple and series even more. The storyline worked for me! The twist in the middle of the book threw me for a loop (phone hurl loop), and then the plot twist at the end had me going...what the heck? I loved the secondary characters and they all added value to the story.
Generally, I rarely do I rate a book higher than 3 stars because it has to have a lot in it to get me to give it stars...I have to have a hero I love, a heroine that isn't TSTL, a fairly believable plot, and a HEA that makes me feel like the journey was worth it!
The only reason I didn't give this five stars, was I wanted a HEA, or an epilogue that went more into the future. I wanted to see what happened to David and Maygan down the rode. That's my only complaint. I definitely liked this book and would recommend to others! I can't wait for Luca's book, which is what I suspect is next! Pick up this series and give it a shot. I don't think you will be disappointed!
