There is a major disconnect between the life of a design student and the transition to being a design professional. To demystify the transition, we share the failures, successes, and surprises during our years in college and progression into the the creative process, monetary problems, internships, interviews, mistakes, and personal relationships. We include the work from our first design class to our most current client work, along with side stories and interviews from our mentors, teachers, and peers. This book will serve as the ultimate companion for design students, educators, and anyone breaking into a creative field. At the combined age of forty-six, Andre Andreev and Dan Covert have been recognized by I.D. , BDA , Communication Arts , PRINT , Graphis , Metropolis , the Type Directors Club, The Art Directors Club, CMYK , HOW , Adobe, STEP Field Guide to Emerging Design Talent , and Young Guns . They met while studying graphic design at California College of the Arts and currently work for MTV’s on-air design department in New York, while operating their firm dress code at night. They also co-teach typography and design courses at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Andre eats no meat, Dan dislikes puppies.
I cannot emphasize how incredible this book is. I swear I treat it like my bible and refer back to it a lot for tips and reminding myself of people who relate to me. For so long I felt so alone in the design world and finding this book one fine day gave me so much hope and inspiration during those rough school nights when nothing was going right. They don't try to be something they're not and openly admit to having fun with their work and personal lives, rather than swearing by intense art rules and regulations. If you're struggling in school or have an ounce of doubt in your career choice, pick up this book.
Great concept, but the content- words and images- felt really slapped together. Was kind of disturbed by the quality of the images, and especially by the teeny teeny tiny images. Regardless, I did enjoy reading the bits of advice from the authors' colleagues. It's such an interesting subject, but this book did not tackle it in the eye-opening way I had hoped for.
This is a great book that will be on the shelves soon. I have seen a draft copy and its a great insight to starting out in design and starting your career. the authors are my former students and they are great.
Dan & Andre were the roughest professors I've ever had. We received "Never Sleep" as a graduation present and through their insightful visual & narrative journey of successes and failures, I've grown to respect them. It was honest. And raw.
