Rosemary Jansz was born on 7 December 1932 in Panadura, British Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka), she was the oldest child of Dutch-Portuguese settlers, Barbara "Allan" and Cyril Jansz. Her father was a wealthy educator who owned three posh private schools. She was raised in colonial splendor: dozens of servants, no work, summers at European spas, a chaperone everywhere she went. A dreamy child, she wrote her first novel at eight, and all through her teens scribbled madly romantic epics in imitation of her favorite writers: Sir Walter Scott, Alexandre Dumas and Rafael Sabatini.
At 17, Rosemary rebelled against a feudal upbringing and went to the University of Ceylon, where she studied three years. She horrified her family by taking a job as a reporter, and two years later marrying with Summa Navaratnam, a Ceylonese track star known as "the fastest man in Asia." The marriage had two daughters. Unhappily, he often sprinted after other women. Disappointed with her husband, in 1960, she moved with her two daughters and took off for London.
In Europe she met her future second husband, Leroy Rogers, an african-american. "He was the first man," she recalls, "who made me feel like a real woman." After getting a divorce from her first husband, she married Rogers in his home town, St. Louis, Missouri. They moved with her family to California, where she had two sons. Six years later, when that marriage broke up, Rosemary was left with four children to support on her $4,200 salary as a typist for the Solano County Parks Department. In 1969, in the face of a socialist takeover of Ceylon, her parents fled the island with only ?100, giving Rosemary two more dependents. At 37, the rich girl from Ceylon was on her uppers in Fairfield.
Every night for a year, Rogers worked to perfect a manuscript that she had written as a child, rewriting it 24 times. When she was satisfied with her work, she sent the manuscript to Avon, which quickly purchased the novel. That novel, ''Sweet Savage Love'', skyrocketed to the top of bestseller lists, and became one of the most popular historical romances of all time. Her second novel, ''Dark Fires'', sold two million copies in its first three months of release. Her first three novels sold a combined 10 million copies. The fourth, ''Wicked Loving Lies'' sold 3 million copies in its first month of publication. Rosemary Rogers became one of the legendaries "Avon Queens of Historical Romance". The difference between she and most of others romance writers is not the violence of her stories, it is the intensity. She says: "My heroines are me", and certainly her life could be one of her novels.
In September of 1984, Rosemary married a third time with Christopher Kadison, but it was a very brief marriage and they soon began to live apart. "I'd like to live with a man," she admits, "but I find men in real life don't come up to my fantasies. I want culture, spirit and sex all rolled up together."
Today single, Rosemary lives quietly in a small dramatic villa perched on a crag above the Pacific near Carmel. Her four children are now away from home and she continues to write.
Rosemary passed away at the age of 87 on November 12, 2019 in Carmel, California where she called home since the early 1970s.
For some authors/books it's love at first sight, for other it will be instant dislike. Be it in the years 70, 80 or 2000, it seems that I just can't like Rosemary Rogers books and this is definitely the last I read of her.
A friend told me that this book is different than her old ones (mainly, no serial rapes be it by the hero or other male characters in the book) and that I could enjoy it. It's true, there is no rape in this one (even though when the heroine goes to ask the hero's help to avoid being raped by her stepfather, the hero tells her that if he helps her she will have to pay him and the price he chose is her virtue).
In short, this book bored me to tears. It is poorly written, the characters are caricatural and the dialogs are dull or straight out ridiculous. The plot? What plot? And like her other books I couldn't believe in her HEA. Honestly, reading this book was like reading a very very very bad caricature of Judith McNaught's (which I like, by the way) historical romance books.
Enjoyed it very much, the plot twisted and turned enough to make it interesting. The Russian ad English homes, manors and Courts were described very well, almost felt as if I was there looking around.
I give it 2 stars only because I have recently read a book which was, in my opinion, way worse than this one.
The novel is part historical (again, Russia and England of the 19th century are not given many descriptions, which could have been interesting), part erotic, part thriller, part romantic, and it is not able to be good in none of the above genres.
At first i thought that the absence of plot could be justified by the presence of a lot of sex. But no, because after the first few encounters (poorly described and not very exciting), sex disappears. It is only full of clichés which make it boring and annoying: the main male character (Edmond) is an arrogant, possesive, incapable of loving being with an apparently shadowy past which is never justified other than a few references of the type "he had done it before" (but we don't know in which occasions or why). The main female character (Brianna) is a young, phisically small virgin who is escaping from her stepfather who wants to abuse her, and accepts to be procted by the male mc in change of sexual favours. So, she finds herself forced in a toxic and quite abusive relationship which also puts her life in danger (becuase Edmond is trying to foil a riot against the zar in Russia and decides to bring Brianna with him because he basically becomes obsessed with her). Everything ends well, of course, and just as I was starting to admire Brianna for rejecting Edmond and wanting to go back to London and buy her own house to become an independent woman and devote to the poor, Edmond finally opens his heart and she is convinced by other people to give him a chance. In London hu submerges her with gifts and buys her a house and Brianna accepts to marry him. That's it and honestly I don't know if I missed some parts but I couldn't completely understand how they ended up falling in love with each other.
This was beautifully written with believable characters, and just what I needed as a bit of non-thinking pleasure reading. I admit that at a few points in this one I found some actions/assurances hard to believe, but overall the book was exactly what it should be. Enjoyable, fun, well-written, and easy to escape into
My only read in the genre, and would have preferred a different 'type' story. Also surprised at the protracted buildup (personal expectations) in getting to the good stuff. Still, a satisfying fling with Romance!
First time reading this author - so far, not very impressed. Too many clichés and too obvious. Sex before you get to chapter 3? How stereotype!
This book is so poorly written, I've had to challenge myself to finish reading this thing! I keep skipping huge chunks of it. I usually read a romance novel in less than a day. I read these books when I don't want to think too much about what I'm reading. But this book has taken the better part of a week. And I've still got about a 100 pages to get through! Never, ever buy something by Rosemary Rogers. Never. It's not worth your money!
The basic storyline is good, although she's given away the plot much too soon. But that's not what rubs me the wrong way. It's the way she writes. A 5th grader has better language than this! Ms Rogers doesn't grasp the concept of the English language. By gods, I don't even know how to describe how badly this is written! Not only did she make the leading girl a basketcase who has no sense of self, but the leading man is... Let me just say that if someone was talking like that to me, and treating me that way - I would bloody kill him!!! And the way these characters talk. No one talks like this!! No one ever has in the history of the world talked like this!!! No, Rosemary Rogers should not be allowed to write and publish books. Ever. Avoid this book if you can.
At the end there were quite a number of holes in the plot to which the author had not given me answers to. Also, the plot was winding and I found myself thinking about a scene/situation: "That wasn't really neceassary".
It wasn't the most smooth execution of a romance I've read and the descriptions of each room got tiring after a while. The politics were twisted and I skipped large chunks of it because it just got boring.
I didn't quite like the heroine's character (Brianna). It was too vague. She was more spoken about rather than showed. The hero (Edmond), however, was portrayed in a consistent manner. Most of his dialogue's made me think, "Yes, that's what he would say." Some may call it predictable, but to me that means as a reader I understood his character well enough to make him seem believable.
Overall, it wasn't a bad read. I did enjoy it... and I read it more than twice.
You can tell when I'm down in the dumps by my reading habits. There is something extreamly comforting about sappy romance novels when you're not feeling your best. They are escapism, fantasy and disney endings every time. Roger's work is no exception. As promised there is a plot, of sorts, romance, of sorts, and total fantasy through and through.
This particular romance did have undercurrents of non-consent and an occasionally uncomfortable level of possesive language (both of which thrilled our young, innocent heroine), but all are quite common in the historical romance genre. There was no attempt at defying expectation, this was entirely your traditional "man wants woman, man gets woman, man falls in love with woman" romance book. Very straight laced.
Exactly the kind of trashy read I needed, but nothing to write home about, or recommend for a second read. These stories are, quite literally in some charity shops, ten a penny.
Very nicely done...not the usual characters but if you're already familiar with Rosemary Rogers then you won't be surprised by anything in this book. I have read many of her books, and I was delighted to find that these two characters were different from all the others. If you're being honest with yourself, you'll admit what we want from this author is her ability to describe the sex act like it has never been done...you know as you're reading that it doesn't happen this way (unless you're incredibly fortunate), but that is precisely why we love Rosemary Rogers. As always, I found the character development to be consistent and somewhat unpredictable. And, oh by the way, the story is good too!
This was so trite. I enjoyed most of it but by the time I got to the ending I wanted to throw the book at someone. I did actually throw it on my bed at one point because it was so annoying, but then because I'd read that far in, I just finished it. She is so blind and refuses to believe he loves her. He is an idiot. So supposedly clever but fails completely in knowing his own feelings and heart. Done to death so many times, the theme just got irritating. Loved the Russian element though. I think it was that that kept me reading.
The hunky, half-Russian hero had an uncanny ability to bend people to his will. It was kind of hot. Once he got a hold of the heroine, he was very possessive. He started falling hard before he even knew it. This is the first book where the heroine gets wounded more than the hero. Anyway, I really enjoyed this and read it in a couple of hours. I will try Rosemary Rogers again.
I liked it. It was fine. Not much stood out, though. I did like the use of hidden passageways. I also liked how Edmond actually threatened his brother if he went for Brianna. Weirdly, that was a turn on. LOL
This is the 4th book by Rogers that I have read and once again, she delivers! Anyone who likes the erotic/romance genre will love her lusty/scandalous novels! The hero's possessiveness is again present in this book (as it is in many of her novels)... so sexy.
