Gabe is about to graduate and has no idea what to do, which is a problem because a) he doesn't come from Earth, and b) on Illirin, you kind of need to pick a path right out of school. He can't follow his Very Important Father's political footsteps, and he doesn't have a military bent or a commercial bent. Really, he just loves his art.
And a young woman. He loves a young woman whom he can't be with because she's from Earth, and see point A: he's not from Earth. It's forbidden to go across the Schism between worlds.
Except the story is called "Breaking the Schism." So guess what happens next?
I enjoyed the story and the background, and it leads right into the events that take place at the beginning of Schism, the next Illirin book. Check it out!

This was a good short story setup for the next two novels. I'm looking forward to seeing where they go.
