if i had known that this book was written in 1998, i probably would not have read it. however, i found a bunch of music that i haven't heard of, some that i had heard OF but never heard, and some refreshers on my personal influences.

i am sure there is something better now (pandora? or whatever streaming site the kids listen to these days.)

I consider my snobby music knowledge above average and I had only heard of about 3/4 of these bands, maybe listened to roughly 1/2 of them. Easy read with some fun stories peppered in like when Lee "Scratch" Perry lost his mind, started walking around backwards, eating money, praying to bananas, then burned his studio to the ground. My favorite was reading about fellow Michigan-born rockers, MC5 and The Stooges.

I owe Roni Sarig and this book a huge "Thank You" for introducing me to dozens of amazing bands that I had heard of, but never paid attention to over the past 30 years as an obsessive music nerd and musician.

The Secret History of Rock is jam packed with info on dozens of obscure (and maybe some not so obscure) bands and artists who may not have attained popular success, but who's work has inspired hundreds of other bands and artists to take rock music into different directions. Each band / artis

Great book, full of interesting bands and artists to know about, the author makes a great job telling a story and ultimately, creating enough curiosity in you to make yo go and check chrome, pere ubu or the dead kenedys among other acts after every chapter.
