Sunscreen alert! Jessica and the Unicorns are headed for the balmy, boy-filled beaches of Hawaii!
From the personal journal of soon-to-be eighth grader Jessica
Okay, you do the friends + summer - parents + Hawaii. What does that equal? Aloha? The answer should be obvious.
But it isn't. This Hawaiian vacation is kind of... freaky. And I'm not even sure why. All I know is that my friends aren't who I thought they were... not anymore. Have they changed? Or have I?
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
So good! I didn’t realize this took place after the Unicorn books! Loved the references to the personal development of Ellen Riteman (where was she in SVH?!) and how several of the girls learned being cool wasn’t the most important thing. I feel like there have been several unrealistic Hawaii trips, but this one was cool- staying with Kimberley’s aunt and annoying cousin (or is she annoying?!).
I was an ardent reader of Sweet Valley for several years, and my interest waned until I read this and its companion book. It was a great way to get my interest back in time for the new Sweet Valley Jr. High and Sweet Valley Senior Year (which I read at the same time, since I felt Jr. High was a bit too juvenile and more of a guilty pleasure).
In this book, Jessica acts a lot more like Elizabeth than herself when she goes to Hawaii with the Unicorns and feels like an outcast.
This was one of the two transitional books from the Sweet Valley Twins series to the Junior High series. I had missed this when it originally came out but just got it from paerbackswap.com.....it was cute and interesting and filled in some questions I had from back then. :) A must for Sweet Valley fans!
I loved this transition book. I was a little older than Jessica is in this book when I read it but I still loved the book. I liked the setting, Hawaii, and reading about all their outfits and fun things they did. Also, Jessica isn't a complete bitch which was refreshing ;)
It's about going on vacation with the Unicorns and bullying. Torn between defending a geek (a junior) or remaining as a member of the bullying Unicorns, Jessica sure isn't enjoying the vacation she's having in Hawaii.
Used to find it interesting. Apparently, not anymore...
