The problem starts with Jessica and Elizabeth noticing that their friend Mary has not been seen lately. Then others note the same thing, and soon the idea is going around that Mary is missing. Mary and her mother had been arguing, so running away becomes a possibility. That Mary could have been kidnapped is also a possibility
