"Powr Mastrs Vol. 2" follows hot on the heels of this elusive artist's first volume-- in a series of six graphic novels--which was one of last year's most anticipated debuts. C.F. comes out of the mythic Providence, Rhode Island art and noise scene--his musical alias is Kites. In a recent profile "The Comics Reporter" observes, "Contrasting sharply with many of his flashie ...more

Any comparisons to Henry Darger are immediately legitimized and amplified with Vol. 2's inclusion of watercolors. Still, C.F. is on his own crazy thing here, wholly original yet deconstructed fantasy. The overarching story is starting to cohere, even as wacky new concepts are introduced. I think what makes this series so endearing to me is that it's constantly teetering right on the edge, threatening to tip over into lazy absurdism and cheap nonsense, but it never actually does so, so it's const ...more

What a weird, weird, weird, weird, weird, weird book.

I loved it.

What I like most about alt comics like Powr Mastrs is that they prove that there are certain things that can only be done with comics. Alan Moore has said that he often tried to do things with comics that can not be done in film or any other media (which is what he told Terry Gilliam when he was tapped to handle the Watchmen film originally) and indeed it seems that the best comics writers and artists create comics that are wholly unique to the medium. When you read something like Powr Mastrs yo ...more

Didn't realize that this came out in 2008! Almost ten years old. Good. Makes me want to start drafting my own comic about future super-ish people.

Saw a comparison to Henry Darger in another review. I see the similarities but they may only be skin deep. The style is there but the substance isn't the same. It's not a bad thing, though. I wish the volumes were collected. Seems harsh to judge a single installment without the others to support it.

With Powr Mastrs 2, C.F.'s world and story starts to come into focus. It's still insane and still utterly alien, but a structure is starting to reveal itself. Because of that, it's not as bizarre as the first one, which is both a good and bad thing. I can't wait for the next one.

I was getting kind of worried halfway through that it totally wasn't living up to the genius of the first volume, and while it doesn't quite match that, the last 30 or so pages kind of tie together all of the disjointed craziness in a satisfying way. I want to get my hands on the third volume!

C.F. is one of the most refreshing minds in comics today. Kind of the Henry Darger of sequential art.
