'it had dwelt in the shop window of the antique shop, forgotten and still. But waiting. Waiting for that one person who would catch sight of it, that one person who would admire the seasoned wood and the pure, ageless craftsmanship. It didn't choose that person; they made that choice on their own.'

Wow Bev, what a debut you have! The Making of Gabriel Davenport was absolutely stunning!

The story starts with Beth and Stu, a married couple who have moved into a new home, in a small village in Englan

I can't believe this is a debut novel! Beverley Lee writes like she has done so her whole life. I was immediately drawn in by Bev's expert, detailed narrative. The thing that blew me away was how Bev could transition that narrative into different characters-everyone from a nursing, first time mother, to a 30ish year old priest, to a teenaged boy to ancient evils-everyone had a unique voice and I knew exactly who was speaking by the inner mind chat and dialogue.

This book is a masterpiece!
I highly recommend reading this book!
The fine craftsmanship of the book is simply brilliant.
The book truly carried me away and I was really sad when I had to stop reading and go to work.
The language is really beautiful and intelligent, the vocabulary is diverse; the blooming flowers of it all being small, pretty words that are not often used.
The characters have great personalities that connected with me. I had sympathy with all of them and truly wanted to know what ha

“She dreamed in grey; the colour of misery.”

Beverly Lee has to be one of the most under-rated authors I’ve come across this year. Her debut novel oozes talent! This book grabbed hold of me from the very first sentence and didn’t let go, even after I turned the last page. Beverly created a deliciously creepy atmosphere, with amazing pathetic fallacy comparable to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It takes a lot to creep me out but the start of this book was genuinely chilling! The novel was perfectly

Ok, I knew I was going to like this book because of all the hype I constantly heard about it, but I honestly didn't think I was gonna like it so much!! The book grasped me from the beginning and I kept flipping page after page not wanting to stop because I wanted to know what was gonna happen next!

The thriller portion of this book with it's supernatural beings was what drew me to the book at first (besides Bev herself, because she's fantastic). And I can say, it definitely didn't disappoint! Ha

The Making of Gabriel Davenport was not what I expected - in all the right ways!

The opening line alone was beautiful, and drew me in right away. It also got dark very quickly, and set the tone for the rest of the book. I wasn't even five (short) chapters into the story before I was fearing for Beth's life, and I still feel for everything that's gone so terribly wrong for her. While she wasn't one of the most active characters throughout the book she's one of my favourites, which I think says a l

Now I'm admittedly a slow reader at times and often other things in my life can take priority, but once I started this book I just could not put it down. The length of the chapters really helps the story flow so well and kept enticing me to carry on reading. The usual "just one more chapter" before sleep quickly escalated in numerous chapters.

The opening scenes of the book really creeped me out and I really regretted reading this before going to sleep one night (it was not a good night's sleep)!

From chapter one to the very end, this story kept me on the edge of my sit. It also kept me from turning the lights off at night. The authors writing was so engaging, and poetic. I need more of these characters. More of this world! Good thing I have book 2 waiting for me!!! Well done! Must read!

She sighed, a soft exhalation of breath, which misted the window for a moment. Then, it was gone. Sometimes, she wished that she could disappear as easily.

This was a brilliant debut! As a constant reader & a somewhat writer, I truly appreciate the details Beverley Lee has put into this story. I love when an author can transport the reader into the setting with such ease. I was enthralled with the atmosphere of this entire story from beginning to end! Just finished this amazing book. Holy flying cats it was great! There is an underlying feeling of tingly fear throughout this entire book and I love it! Taken from multiple points of view, it's cohesive and understandable, you loose nothing of the story. Though the main character is mid teens, I'd still classify this novel as Adult Fiction. The story has a Stephen King type feel without seeming to copy him at all; a bit of an homage perhaps? I thought the story was very unique, highly original, ...more

A brilliant page turning dark fantasy by Beverley Lee. I learned quickly not to read it in the dark! The pace was perfect, the unveiling of characters excellent and the ending! Omg, it has left my thoroughly impatient for book 2 Exemplary debut novel for lovers of fantasy

Beverley Lee is a great writer. Her style is that of veteran novelists, so it’s crazy this is a debut book. I was immediately taken with Chapter One and it kept me plugged into the story. Bev writes those suspenseful scenes craftfully, and she knows her characters. Because of her attention to detail, I was anchored into the setting, I cared about the people in this book and the treacherous things that were befalling them. Oh man...and can she write a terrorizing foe. I’m not

If you've read this book already, then you will recognize I have the wrong colored feathers falling, but this just worked so perfectly! If you have not read The Making of Gabriel Davenport and you're in to paranormal, supernatural thrillers, then you should get it when you take your next book budget for a ride. I can happily say, this book put me in mind of Alfred Hitchcock! There was something going on

I really liked this story! From the very start author Lee had me captured in intrigue. I needed to know more with every chapter. I loved how I could connect with the characters. I seemed to have a little connection with every character in this book, well the living ones. My favorite character was Noah, a man of faith, however, he understood his flaws and understood others. He was relatable, he was not judgmental, even though he was a man of religion. In fact sometimes I felt he was the least jud ...more

Beverley Lee’s craftsmanship is outstanding, as a debut novel it stands an equal amongst those crafted by ‘old masters’.

I only ever intended to tiptoe into a couple of chapters to get a taste, but I literally lost hours as rain lashed at my windows; so absorbed from the very first paragraph. I was snowed-in, cut-off, paralysed with fear, cradling little Gabriel, right there with Beth . . . terrified!

I refuse to give too much away, The Making of Gabriel Davenport drags you into a world a mix wit

I highly recommend this book to anyone with a taste for the supernatural. I grew up a very superstitious person and afraid of ghosts and demons, so naturally I gravitate to a good supernatural story, like this one.

This book was thrilling from front to back and filled with characters to love, hate, and be afraid of.
I thoroughly enjoyed Gabe and wished I could see more of him in the book.
Some characters I didn't like, such as the twins, and Carver. Maybe they took too much time away from Gabe, o

The Making of Gabriel Davenport is a great horror story that ticks all the right boxes - a sinister demon, a priest, a paranormal research group, and a vampire that is predator-ish in all the best ways that vampires are! I really enjoyed reading this book! It definitely evoked shades of Anne Rice for me - the Manor, for example, reminds me of the Talamasca from The Queen of the Damned, which is one of my all-time favourite Anne Rice books. Aside from Gabriel, who is of course the protagonist, al ...more

This is a really entertaining supernatural fantasy/horror novel, the combination of young protagonists, vampires, demons and a rural English setting making it read a little like Phil Rickman doing Buffy. The action moves along at a good pace and there are some nicely creepy moments. It never gets out and and out scary, playing more to the dark fantasy side of things, with supernatural characters as sympathetic as the human ones at times.
It definitely feels like the first book in a series, settin

The Making of Gabriel Davenport starts off strong; I'll give it that. It hooked me from the beginning and had all the right elements, including a genuinely creepy atmosphere and excellent writing. The first sentence is "She dreamed in grey, the colour of misery." I mean, how could a book that starts off like that be bad? I couldn't wait to read what came next.
