Not only are readers provided with an overview of Mayan culture, they are encouraged to use clues and examine the text to solve secrets of the past civilization. One “Deadly Secrets” sidebar involved the type of Mayan sculpture referred to as “stela.” The answer was provided in an inverted textbox on the next page (but was difficult to read with the light font against a busier background). The text and its colorful photographs, pack a lot of information in small bites into a slender volume. Readers will be fascinated to discover why Mayans wore the heads of their enemies, why their children were cross-eyed, and how chocolate became currency for this culture.
