Return of the Condor is far and away the best book on the subject. John Moir covered the condor recovery effort for magazines and newspapers for years and his extensive and award-winning journalism, including an investigative piece for Birding magazine, became this fine book. Moir presents a unique insider's view of the remarkable tale of saving a species from the brink of ...more

For the sake of brevity, I have combined my thoughts here with my reading of “Condor To The Brink And Back -- The Life And Times Of One Giant Bird” by John Nielsen. Both books are enjoyable and complement each other effectively but Moir’s book was more detailed and better written so I would give it the nod over Nielsen’s. The parts about the condor researchers and the condors themselves were very good-5 stars. He spends a lot of timing describing study skins of various endangered species at a museum, for example. Also, I didn't walk away with a sense that he was invested in or passionate about this particular conservation effort. For example, he goes to see a very special individual condor ...more

Science journalism at its finest! Admittedly, the story of the California condors is in and of itself captivating, but Moir has taken that story and crafted a book both accessible and riveting. Definitely a great resource to learn about the people and their tireless efforts, highs and lows, in the quest to keep the condor from extinction.

What a ride! I love true stories that pull me in just like fiction, but where I get to learn about the world around me in the process. This made our trip to the Grand Canyon (where we got to see one of these amazing birds) all the more personal.
