Great introduction to India for children! I think any book that looks at another culture is very good for young children. I can remember that my generation did not get much exposure to other cultures when I was in grade school. Some of the names I remember my fellow classmates calling each other makes me cringe today! Very important to get a broad cultural perspective.

An introduction to the country of India for kids. This provides a brief history, geographic/regional survey, and intro to typical daily routines for children.

I love that this series always has the main character living in a city that is medium in size and not necessarily the most well-known. It helps kids get a better picture for the "average" child who lives in the country. A very informative and attractively illustrated intro to India.

Even though these are easy readers, I really like reading them to my kids when we start learning about a new country, they are concise, but give a good introduction to the country.

I discovered this book today while working on pulling books for a display and I've never seen it before and I was REALLY excited to find it! It's a well written book that has illustrations that I think will appeal to kids of all ages. While it is a little text heavy for some kids, and the words may be difficult for new readers to read on their own, there is a pronunciation guide next to each Indian word. I liked that it specifically focused on what a child might find interesting- hobbies, school, food, and even a holiday while also providing information on some major cities and other geographical information. I think this would be a perfect book to help introduce kids to other cultures and countries.

Living in... is a new series that will introduce beginning readers to kids from around the world. We learn some of the different geographies of the land and some of the major cities. Then, we spend a day in the life of each child from getting to ready for school to the end of the day. In between, we learn a little bit of history and some other facts pertaining to arts, culture, or sports. A page of country facts is included at the end.

Geography and cities of India. They wear sari and kurti (long shirt) with pants. Sabzi is a dish made from cooked vegetables. It discusses when Britain ruled India and Gandhi. Diwali marks the New year. Its a five day celebration in Oct or Nov (clean, light clay lamps to represent our inner light, eat yummy food while watching fireworks, exchange gifts, big meals with our uncles).
