This is not your typical romance novel, which is why I enjoyed it so much. It's more the story of a woman who has started a new life chapter in Rome to pursue her art, only to discover she has multiple sclerosis. Not only does her diagnosis strain an already rocky relationship with her fiancé, it forces her to reevaluate everything she knows, leading her on a new life path, one with far less certainty.

Felicity is a strong, likable character and very well developed. The reader also catches up wit

When I began reading Not By Design, I expected it to be a twist on a traditional romance novel but was delightfully surprised to find it was much more than just a variation of the conventional romance. Felicity left her father’s company in Montreal and moved to Rome to pursue her career in art causing a rift between Felicity and her father that could not be healed. While in Rome, she found love and a proposal of marriage, along with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. When Marco, her fiance, lear ...more

This is the fourth book in Balawyder's series about four women sharing friendship and their quest to find healthy, loving relationships with men.
In this book, Felicity is tested with her feelings about her upcoming nuptials to Marco, a man who has it all - good looks, charm, and a great job. But Felicity has her doubts about whether or not Marco is the right man for her.
After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Felicity begins to worry that Marco may not be ready to take the plunge with li

I was captivated from the start and stayed up past my bedtime to read the entire novel. Ms. Balawyder has crafted a compelling tale of what can happen when the fairy tale fails to materialize. On the cusp of marrying the man of her dreams and having a spectacular wedding in Rome, Felicity receives a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. An unexpected death and money issues further complicate her life. Forced to cross the ocean and return home, Felicity struggles with accepting her illness and its lim ...more

Third in Carol's Getting to Mr. Right series, this continues the adventures of Felicity Starr as she continues her struggle to find contentment in a tumultuous world. Thirty-five and living in Rome, Felicity is caught up in a flurry of wedding plans to a man she subconsciously (and sometimes more) is unsure of when calamity strikes. Her father’s sudden death and her struggles with a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis prove too much for her fiancee and he leaves her. Daunted but unbroken, Felicity find ...more

What a touching story! When I saw that this book featured a main character with MS, I knew that I could relate to this story as my mother has MS. The author really did her research regarding MS and brought attention to an invisible disease mixed with a little romantic story. You never know who someone is until they are faced with news that changes your future completely. This was a great book to read relaxing next to the pool. If you or someone you know has MS, share this story with them. You ju ...more

“Not by Design” is the latest offering from multi-published women’s fiction author Carol Balawyder. It is a sequel to “Getting to Mr. Right,” which you should read if you haven’t. “Getting to Mr. Right” is the story of four women who meet at a support group (the focus of which is women who have men/father issues) and form lasting, sincere friendships.

"Not by Design” is Felicity Starr’s story. She is one of the women in the support group, and she has it all—looks, youth, a rich father, talent, tr

“Sometimes we have to go through difficult experiences to see what’s around the bend. And in the end, we find happiness in ways we never imagined.” I was fascinated by the lovely, quiet story of Felicity. When we meet Felicity, she is thriving in Rome. She loves the beauty and culture of Italy. Felicity has friends, a developing artistic designing career, and a fiancé. Then several serious things happen and Felicity returns to her hometown of Montreal to put her life back together. Felicity deve ...more

My dad was born on a farm town in Rama, Saskatchewan and my mom in Montreal. I was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec but currently I live in Montreal. I first came to study Early Childhood Education at McGill. It was a lonely time for me. Away from home for the first time. My parents didn’t believe in summer camps.

I didn’t like teaching kindergarten. All that discipline and yelling and screaming all at o
