We read this to our son, who absolutely loved this book. He is now fully committed to becoming a ninja :) The book had him on the edge of his seat, barely breathing, until its dramatic conclusion. We reached out to the author who promptly replied and encouraged our son. Highly recommended!

In the future, the Empire runs the world. The Empire is a ruled by an evil overlord complete with all the trappings of feudal era Japan: Shoguns, Samurai and Ninjas. The only major country left standing is the United States and it's under attack. Kate, Ghost and Cormac find themselves recruited by a shadowy resistance organization known as the Black Lotus. Lord Goda seeks to unite the Moon Sword with the other two swords of Sarumara. This will make him an unstoppable force. A long time ago in Japan, the Black Lotus stole the Moon Sword and now protects it. When the Moon Sword is stolen back, Kate, Ghost and Cormac attempt a daring mission to recover it. I highly recommend this book. It's perfect for fans of fantasy and martial arts.

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!! This book has been sitting on my shelf for a while and I wasn’t expecting much because it is a middle grade BUT BOY WAS I PROVED WRONG. I loved it so much!! All the different elements in the book like time travel, superpowers, ninjas being cool as fuck, etc. were used so well in the story and made so much sense with the plot. The spacing of the story was also really good by it flowing really well. It left off where a sequel could eventually be written or not and stay a solo novel. BUT I HOPE A SEQUEL GETS MADE BECAUSE I WOULD LOVE TO READ IT!

I plan to buy the other books in this series for my library. It's definitely a wonderful book, with an exciting and unique dystopian world. For all my library patrons who love Japanese anime and Japanese ninjas, this is the book I suggest for them. It's a heck of a good read!

Schwarzer Lotus ist wirklich ein sehr gutes Buch. Ich habe es meinem sehr (vor)belesenen neunjährigen Sohn vorgelesen. Und es hat uns von Anfang an extrem in seinen Bann gezogen. Für mich gibt es aber doch ein paar "ABER":
- Für mich verspricht das Buch beim Einstieg (implizit nur), dass man darin viel über das alte Japan, Ninjas, Samurai ... und auch über Faschismus lernen könnte. Das passiert auch, keine Frage. Aber es könnte mehr sein.
- Dann aber steht der Thriller (eine wirklich sehr gute Story), der Kampf und der lange, lange Showdown im Vordergrund.
- Mein wesentlicher Kritikpunkt ist aber, dass das Buch für Kinder, junge Jugendliche an einigen Stellen zu heftig ist. Die böse Kika flüstert Ghost nicht nur auf Gedankenwege ein (das war noch okay), nein sie kontrolliert ihn dann auch: " Es war wie eine lebende Präsenz, wie ein Insekt, das in seinem Kopf siedelte und bebte. (...) Das Insekt zuckte mit den Beinen, wenn sie sprach.". Insgesamt ist der "Bodycount" viel zu hoch: "Ein Gewirr aus blutigen Leibern breitete sich wie ein Teppich von Leichen über dem Boden aus". Beim Vorlesen konnte ich über diese und ähnliche Stellen hinweg springen. Ich würde auch in zwei, drei Jahren (das Buch ist laut Verlag ab 11 Jahren geeignet) noch nicht wollen, dass mein Kind solche Dinge ließt.

A really fun read outside of my usual genres. I enjoyed the themes of friendship and loyalty. And I liked the blend of ninja and samurai in a global setting. I think my young son would enjoy it.

Dies beeinflusst allerdings nicht im Geringsten meine Meinung.
WAS EIN TOLLES KINDERBUCH!
Ich kann wirklich sehr lange darüber philosophieren, WIE gut ich dieses Buch fand, allerdings kann ich es heute nicht so lang schreiben, aber versuchen wir es einfach!
Die Charaktere! DIE CHARAKTERE! Drei 13-Jährige mit verschiedenen und absolut coolen Superfähigkeiten, die für eine Ninja-Schule rekrutiert werden! EINE NINJA-SCHULE!
WIE COOL IST DAS DENN?! NINJAS SIND SOWIESO DAS BESTE ÜBERHAUPT!
Leute, die unsichtbar durch die Nacht schleichen und mit Giften und Schwertern Menschen umbringen! Unsichtbar, unhörbar und du kriegst nicht mal mit, dass sie da sind, selbst nicht dann, wenn du schon tot bist!
WWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Es könnte an dieser Stelle eventuell herausgekommen sein, dass ich dieses Buch und das Thema des Buches liebe!
Ach ja, ich wollte eigentlich was über die Charaktere schreiben:
Wir hätten da einmal Kate, eine New Yorkerin, die ihre Eltern verloren hat und mit Tieren sprechen kann. Und sie ist badass as fuck!
Dann noch Ghost, der in den Favelas von Brasilien lebt und sich unsichtbar machen kann. Er wirft immer Sprichwörter durcheinander! Es ist sooo niedlich!
Und dann haben wir noch Comac, der in Irland in einem Waisenhaus lebt und auf den Dächern seine Nächte verbringt. Außerdem kann er an Wänden hinauflaufen! Love it!
Und dann kommen die drei auf eine Ninja-Schule und kriegen eine Menge cooler Gadgets und wahnsinnig coole Ausrüstung, mit denen sie auch trainieren!
Ich habe diesen Teil des Buches schon geliebt und den nächsten noch mehr!
Denn dort gibt es bis zum Ende des Buches DURCHGEHENDE Spannung und immer weiter steigernde Ereignisse, die unsere drei Helden auch mal verzweifelt und durchgerüttelt und verloren zurücklassen. Aber sie rappeln sic immer wieder auf und kombinieren ihre Kräfte auf die bestmögliche Weise, um Aufgaben zu lösen.
Manchmal erinnerte es mich daher an Nintendo DS Spiele im Buch und Ninja-Format!
Und das war wahnsinnig toll und ich habe mich prächtig amüsiert!
Die Fantasy hier ist wirklich toll ausgearbeitet und kombiniert einige fantastische Elemente mit Zeitreisen und einer Menge anderem coolem Zeugs!
Allerdings gab es gerade zum ende hin ein paar Längen, die ich fast nicht überstanden hätte, allerdings gab es immer noch eine kleine Begebenheit, die mich dazu brachte weiterzulesen.
Ein paar Sachen wurden allerdings nicht wirklich gut für mich erklärt. Was ist denn jetzt genau Cormacs Fähigkeit? Schnell laufen oder die Schwerkraft außer Kraft setzen oder doch eher an Wänden kleben? Oder alles zusammen?
Und was genau haben sie an der Schule gemacht? Wie schnell entwickeln sich diese Kinder?
Und am Wichtigsten: ICH BRAUCHE MEHR NINJA ACTION! MEHR TÖTEN UND ANSCHLEICHEN UND NICHT SICH DER FÄHIGKEITEN UND TECHNISCHER HILFSMITTEL BEDIENEN!
Wenn das noch bereinigt wird, bin ich super happy und werde mich nie wieder beschweren!
Was mir auch noch aufgefallen ist, ist die Beziehung der drei untereinander! Die Freundschaft ist klar zu spüren und dieses Buch fokussiert auch genau darauf. Freundschaft und was diese bedeutet.
Verzeihen und dem anderen helfen, egal, was es für den Rest der Menschheit bedeuten würde!
Eine coole und schön Botschaft für alle Kinder, die es lesen.
Auf jeden Fall endlich mal wieder ein Kinderbuch, welches für Jungs und Mädchen ansprechend ist und auch lesbar ist. ENDLICH wird nicht auf die LIIIIIEEEEEEEEEBEEEE oder auf Ablenkungen und Weinerlichkeiten Wert gelegt, sondern auf das Abenteuer! Und auf Freundschaft, auf das Coole am Ninja-Sein und generell das Fantastische der Geschichte.
Wahnsinn! Chapeau! Und ich will mehr!

Dieses Buch hat mir wirklich unglaublich viel Spaß gemacht und es hat eins der coolsten Themen der Welt: NINJAS! Und die Kinder sind auch nicht so unglaublich doof, wie man meinen müsste!
Wahnsinn! Die drei sind total toll geschriebene Charaktere, die ich alle schon ins Herz geschlossen habe. Alle so toll geschrieben und haben ihre Eigenheiten.
Sie formen ein tolles Team, welches mit konsequenter Spannung durch den zweiten Teil des Buches führt! Könnten sich einige andere Bücher mal was von abschneiden!
Absolute Empfehlung von mir (einziger Abzug sind die einigen sprachlichen Einfachheiten, manche Längen und fehlende Erklärungen, aber bei Kinderbüchern ganz normal, denke ich :D)!

I didn't noticed that it was pre-teens book when I bought it, but if I bought it I had to read it 😂
Anyways, the book was quite good and that actually surprised me. It was full of never ending action, so it was quite interesting to read. But it still has some downsides. One of them would be that it doesn't go deeper into emotions, friendships/relationships. I know that it is a book for middle schoolers, but I believe it could still go a little deeper into those things, because kids would understand it. There were few scenes where one character was mad at the other and out of nowhere he wasn't mad anymore. There was no explanation of what went through his brain that made him change his mind so quickly.
All in all, the book is not bad and in ny mind it would be perfect for 9-13 year olds who like full of action books. Or who like anime, because it made me think a little about some of them 😂

Amazing, cinematic adventure, full of groovy tech and strange magic as well as friendship and courage and heroism. paced like a bullet, the pages fly by until the final epic battle. One senses we are only scratching the surface of the secrets and mysteries if this world and I look forward to more blazing ninja action in future volumes.

A fabulous futuristic setting with flawed but feisty characters, this is a unique book that will appeal to both boys and girls. The time travel is well handled and plausible & the action is fast-paced and punchy. Cormac is my favourite character, though all have plenty of appeal. A great debut with lots of room to grow - looking forward to part 2!

Ninja action and time travel ... what more could you ask for in a satisfying adventure? Three great characters, each with special powers and plenty of courage, speed you through this tale filled with humour and heart. Really enjoyed it.

Picked this up for my classroom library. It's a charming, fun, inventive story, but it's weighed down by its treatment of female characters and clumsy writing in places.
Personally, I was so put off by the obviously-male depiction of female characters that I have to give it 2 stars. All of the focus on blonde hair, red lips, porcelain skin, and other remarks about beauty had me cringing so hard. I get that the boys are young and, well, young. But when the only female characters 1. get no equal chance to think of any of the men as handsome or good looking (or even have as much of a role in the climax) or 2. evil and almost exclusively focused on as evil, even though her husband is arguably more evil and should be the main focus - well, that's just a hard no from me. And don't get me started on this line:
Also, while kids won't care at all, as an adult I had a hard time understanding how the U.S.A. came to be the U.S.A. almost exactly as we know it in spite of 500 years of Samurai invasion around the world. Like there's an actual resistance, so I would assume that there would be repercussions from the reshaping of history that would have affected how the U.S. formed and developed. But hey Hollywood is still making Marvel movies, just I'm not sure where they're marketing them since I imagine their overseas market would be null... But, again, that's just an adult head scratcher. If you read this, maybe swallow a grain of salt or two.

But when the only female characters 1. get no equal chance to think of any of the men as handsome or good looking (or even have as much of a role in the climax) or 2. evil and almost exclusively focused on as evil, even though her husband is arguably more evil and should be the main focus - well, that's just a hard no from me. And don't get me started on this line:
Also, while kids won't care at all, as an adult I had a hard time understanding how the U.S.A. came to be the U.S.A. almost exactly as we know it in spite of 500 years of Samurai invasion around the world. Like there's an actual resistance, so I would assume that there would be repercussions from the reshaping of history that would have affected how the U.S. formed and developed. But hey Hollywood is still making Marvel movies, just I'm not sure where they're marketing them since I imagine their overseas market would be null... But, again, that's just an adult head scratcher. If you read this, maybe swallow a grain of salt or two.

I loved reading this book, especially since it pulled me into its world. This book was packed with action and mystery but often had its humorous moments.
It was great reading a situation with teenagers who had different backgrounds and experiences, all thrown into the same position. It was really fun reading how each character dealt with the situation in their own way and experiencing some of the issues that would come with a similar situation in real life, such as language barriers.
The author had a lot of good descriptions throughout the book but the one that stuck most was when we were reading through Ghosts' perspective. I really enjoyed how the book switched character perspectives and how the author didn't make his characters' backstory obvious in one go, but gradually added to the small information provided.
The combination of Japanese history, shinobi and time travel is so bizarre when you think about it separately from the book but the author made it work! I really enjoyed this book and would recommend anyone to try it, though it might be preferred by younger readers.

A great fast-paced ninja adventure! It's got an international cast, special abilities, gadgets, mystical swords, actual real-life ninjas...and an adorable mouse. It's pretty full-tilt and I think it would be a proper page-turner as a reading copy*. If it was in my library I'd be aiming at Y6/Y7 for the complexity level. I absolutely love the ending conflict, which I won't spoiler for you, but it made me cheer! If you/your kids enjoyed Alex Rider, Young Bond or anything like that, you should definitely give this a whirl.
* I didn't entirely get on with the audiobook, unfortunately, I don't generally take too well to a US narrator (despite a valiant attempt at the accents!) and I usually listen at x1.25 or x1.5 speed, which I couldn't do with the file format I was sent. This would be an issue with any audiobook, so I'm certainly not holding it against The Black Lotus, just that I think I need to read it as well to give a more accurate review.

Not a bad book. We enjoyed it together. Interesting characters, intriguing scenario, and the basic plot is fine. But I felt like it tried to do too much in the scope of a single novel, and, as a consequence, it didn't develop things with much depth or nuance. It seemed rushed, and significant challenges and difficulties were more or less easily dealt with (especially in comparison and contrast to the build-up and drama involved). Overall, the story ended up far more superficial than it might have been. Not a waste of time, but not as satisfying as it had the potential to be.

Read for family book club. I enjoyed this one a lot, but I will admit that some of the conclusions the kids' came to were not what I would have thought at all, but they always turned out to be correct. So that was a little silly to me, but probably wouldn't bother an actual child. More frustrating is the fact that this supposedly is the first book in a series that has no sequels ever written. I get that sometimes publishing is like that, but it's pretty lame.

A good start to a series where Lord Goda (or President Goda) has the ability to travel across time and space with the aid of two swords while the Black Lotus has command of the third sword. There were just enough loose ends for a second book, and just enough questions not answered (or even asked) to take the series beyond a second book.

Fantasticly fun book, full of adventure, friendship and action. Loved the alternative world where it's been taken over by the evil villain Goda and the Kats. Highly recommend reading and I'm hoping there will be a second book in the series very soon!

I think that this book was good in all, but it is hard to search for things that I am needing for my book project in school. It’s pretty good though, I like the concept!

Unique book, i really like it. The idea is great and the storyline is packed with new stuff each chapter. I wish it was more creative, however.
