I can draw and sew, but this book reaffirms for me that I have a lot to learn about fashion design, garment-making and tailoring. Project Runway runner-up Daniel Vosovic gives fascinating, fully-illustrated explanations of processes you only get a glimpse of on the show: sketching stylized fashion croquis (figures), "rubbing off" existing garments to create new patterns, and draping fabric on dress forms. I am eager to give the tutorials and tips a go.
The book's production value is exquisite, from the velveteen cover, its layout, design, and full-color photography, right down to the photogenic, adorable author. I can't believe it sells for only $29.95!
I have been a loyal Project Runway fan since I first heard of it in season one, and started faithfully watching (via my husband's cable) during season two. Thus I have a soft spot for the season 2 cast, Santino and Andre and Chloe and Kara and Daniel (Franco for laughs, Vosovic for his talent). I even have the Banana Republic dress Daniel and Andre designed. (Sure it's a size 2, and two babies later I can't fit into it, but no matter.)
This book was a must-have, and it is beautiful and informative.
I came back to this book after reading it halfway through and I thought Vosovic did a nice job of writing about a range of the fashion industry that makes it more accessible for the uninitiated or even put off. There were some fun interviews in there and I really enjoyed Nina Garcia's interview. Nice book, interesting, could have used more fashion pictures but then Vosovic was trying to delve into the mental world of fashion.
I didn't expect much from this book, (I've read other Project Runway Designer books that were not so great) but this one is actually really good! Out of at least 100 books I've read on fashion, this is one of the tops on my list even! It covers many areas in fashion, not just the design aspect...from styling, selling to finding inspiration! I totally recommend this book for any budding designer, stylist or lover of fashion!
Although I have no plans to become a fashion designer, if you were, this would be a good place to start. Seeing a lot of the "stuff" that goes into the making of sketches, designs, patterns and garments that you do't get to see in the TV show was interesting, and gave a much better understanding of the business of fashion. An interesting look into something that I have never given much thought to, but found cool to learn a bit about.
5 stars because it is not so much about style as it is about the industry and the design process. Lots of great interviews and little tips, like how to use pins properly.
I don't know who Daniel V is, but I don't watch tv. I like the book though, full of tips about quality clothes-making and interviews with industry insiders.
