He was the guru of Bhishma Pitamah... He was the avatar of Vishnu but a disciple of Shiva... And He shall be the martial guru of Kalki, the last Avatar in this Yuga! When the Chandravanshi emperor Arjun began expanding his empire to the entire world, the Asuras hit back with an insidious plan. Caught in the crossfire is Raam, who comes back from his penance tofind 21 arrows piercing his father's body. Raam vows to avenge his death by killing the evil Kshatriyas 21 times starting with Arjun. Thus begins The Legend of Parshuram.
Dr. Vineet Aggarwal is described by many as a doctor by qualification, manager by profession and author by passion.
Born in a family of doctors, he successfully completed an initial stint with the family occupation before deciding to venture into pharmaceutical management and currently pursues writing and travel photography along with his managerial roles.
He is the author of popular online blogs ‘Decode Hindu Mythology’ and ‘Fraternity Against Terrorism and Extremism’ and the author of books ‘Vishwamitra – the Man who dared to challenge the Gods’, ‘The Legend of Parshu-Raam’ * 'BHarat - the Man who built a Nation."
This book is a treasure trove of information for all those who love mythology! Vineet is a great friend (we went to the same school) and that makes this book very special. I have read his first book, Vishwamitra, and have now finished reading this second one. That besides, I have also been an avid reader of his blog: decodehindumythology.blogspot.com. He is a talented writer and is thorough with his research. 'Legend of Parshuraam' tracks the story of Raam, the scion of Bhargava clan, the Brahmin boy who cleansed the Earth of Asurs and defeated the bravest of Kshatriyas. The narrative is speckled with stories from Hindu mythology and the writing flows effortlessly across three hundred pages. I got my signed copy, what about you?
A fitting tribute to the wielder of Siva's ax. I couldn't find a book in realm of fiction completely dedicated to Parasu Ram,rather than portraying him as a supporting character and when I find this one,Thanks to the author I'm not disappointed.
Right from the beginning to the end,I've thoroughly enjoyed the book. The main protagonist didn't appear till halfway through the book, that came as a bit surprise, but the void was completely filled by Arjun and his transformation from good to bad is portrayed brilliantly.
The reason why Parasu Ram chose the way he'd chosen was put forth in a believable way. The interactions of Parasu Ram with Vashist and Viswamitra was written well. The emotional turmoils of Satyavati,Jamagadni,Ruchik were captured well and the philosophical theme is maintained throughout the length.
As usual, the fusion of Science,Myth and Philosophy which is hallmark of the author was well maintained in this work as well. For those who've read viswamitra, this might look like a sequel to it.All in all can complete this in a single sitting and you'll thoroughly enjoy the book.Congrats to the author for portraying The Legendary Parasu Ram in a legendary way..hail the Avatar of vishnu and Disciple of Siva-Parasu Ram!!!
Parshuram : The embodiment of Lord Vishnu himself , the disciple of Lord Shiva , wielder of both the axe of Shiva and Vishnu's bow , one of the seven immortals , the man who clansed the earth from the arrogant Kshatriyas for twenty one times , the teacher of legendary warriors like Bheeshma , Karna , Dronacharya and Kripacharya , the only Bharamakhsatriya known in the history of mankind .
Even after having such a larger than time personality there is no epic is available which chronicles the entire life of Parshuram (as the Ramayana for Ram and the Mahabharat for Krishna ) . We only hear the stories of this man from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana and from many folk tales also .
When I came to know about this book I picked it with great expectations and enthusiasm that finally someone tried to chronicle the life of this legend . But the book can't lived up to the expactations . The book is more about the situations which led a Bhramin boy Ram to become the Bharamakhsatriya Parshuram . Rather than 'the legend of Parshuram' it's 'Parshuram : Origins' . The first three parts of the book covers only the story of Kartavirya Arjun and his exploits . The author tried to make Kartavirya Arjun as the second protagonist of the book but the character lacked the depth . The story of transformation of Arjun from protagonist to antagonist was unacceptable . It was a bad and impractical idea . Ravan's character is used as Shakuni of the novel . Some events were very similar to the Shiva trilogy .
The author has done a good job in describing the political and social conditions of India at that time but in the midst of great political canvas , which covers more than half of the book , main story which I was expecting was lost somewhere . The narration was simple and good . If this book was first book of any series the book would be a great start to the series .
Really a nice book for mythology lovers. [Detailed book review is available at: http://thinkerviews.com/books/english...] Ram aka Raam was a descendant of Brahma, considered as the 6th avatar of Vishnu and worshiper of Shiva! He is known better as ParshuRaam (aka Parshuram), the one who holds the divine Parshu (a dagger) which is blessed to him by Lord Shiva. There is a lot written about him, but there is a lot unknown about him as well. You can find traces of his tale even in Ramayana and Mahabharata as well, and yet, it is tough to find a consolidated account of Parshuram's life.
Dr. Vineet Aggrawal, a famous author who started his career as an author by writing a book about Vishwamitra, came with a detailed book on Parshuram.
The plot of this book has its root in the book about Vishwamitra, however, don't worry if you haven't read it yet. The book is complete in itself and you can enjoy reading it without missing any important detail.
The Plot: Let us take a bird's eye view to the plot of the book where I will try to keep most of the spoilers at the bay, but some of them are unavoidable :).
It all stars with the actions of Ruchik, the descendant of Bhrigu who feel disheartened by the actions of his wife Satyavati and her mother, as decided to leave the domestic life. He leaves everything in a moment, including his newborn, and went to the Himalayas to complete his spiritual journey.
The Karma is a great leveler and one has to fulfill all his/her duties, and thus, the circumstances took the turn and Ruchik has to come back into the lives of his wife Satyavati and son Yamadagni (aka Jamadagni)!
Arjun is one of the great rulers of Nabhivarsh and he followed the path of Dharma. With the able guidance of his father and immense warrior skills of his own, he went ahead to have some of the most remarkable political alliances and fought some great wars, all to establish the kingdom of Dharma all over the earth. He was almost successful in his efforts.
Almost, because, there are tribes, which want to keep following their own way of ruling and don't care much about the ideal practices advised by the Dharma. And some of the most cunning minds and brave fighters were there at their side also. Adding to them was Ravana, the rising figure in Asura tribe who is of mixed origin and possessor of the good qualities of both the clans.
Why, Arjun, the ferocious warrior, better known as Sahatrarjun, then is considered as the one who did some wrong stuffs? Why he is killed by Raam (who became Parshuram by then)? And why Raam started a series of wiping out the Kshatryia rulers who were not following the path of Dharma? The sequence of actions and their reactions, are better to explore by reading this book.
Views and Reviews: The book is written in a gripping manner and is a delight for the lovers of Indian Mythogoly. More importantly it explore the characters which are comparatively less explored, but played a very important role in making Bharat (that is India) what it is today.
Of course, there are some gaps when you try to trace the incidents mentioned in various scriptures, which the author may need to go through to collect material for this book, and he had to instill the imaginary stuff there.
While I think that the character of the protagonist could have been given more footage, especially, his days of teen, whatever explored is good in terms of content and representation both. Despite it being the story of Raam, the incident which were responsible to make him Parshuram are explored quite nicely.
Before many years, when reading reviews for a movie, I found a nice line written by a reviewer which was telling something like, without properly exploring the antagonist, you cannot explore the abilities of the protagonist. Very true. The stronger the antagonist is, the protagonist will automatically become stronger than him/her. Often we start marking various characters as black and white, while there is nothing can be attributes so in absolute manner. Practically, almost everyone has the shades of grays, and it is the responsibility of the storyteller to explore them in that way.
What I like in this book is the way the character of Arjun is explored. Of course, the way characters of Ravana, Ruchik, Satyavati, Yamadagni, Renuka, Ram and others are explored are pretty effective and nice, Arjun's character is given proper footage. I'd not seen it is explored so much in other scriptures I came across so far. And I confirm that if it is not explored so nicely, his actions and others' reactions towards the same might not be that convincing. With that let me tell you that each of the character is given its due importance.
The book is good at philosophical and spiritual level as well. The expertise of the author in building scenes and explaining surroundings and exploring battle is admirable. He is a worthy competitor to the bestselling authors in this genre in many aspects.
Here are some of the interesting lines from the book: In every country or society, there exists a few who are unhappy with the way things are… ---- No matter how far one travelled, one had to come back home at the end of the journey. ----- Well, what is history but the variation of facts by the victorious and the self-sympathizing delusions of the defeated?
The cover page is good but could have been a little better.
Summary: Overall, a fantastically retold mythological tale with logical approach. The book has good literary attributes and strong characters.
I have been following Dr. Vineet Aggarwal's blog decodehindumythology.blogspot com since many years now and we have become good friends because of hours of discussion on various mythologies. One day I went to a movie, an hour early, and just to pass my time, I went into Crossword and that is how I got my copy of The Legend of Parshu-Raam. I bought it the second I saw it because, first, I admired the author because of his blog and second, it was a book about Parshu-Raam. Many Indian authors have written about mythology but they limited themselves to the popular stories of Ramayan and Mahabharat. Vineet has dived deep into the mythology with both his books about popular but lesser known characters. (Vishwamitra and now Parshuram) The book is divided into three parts. First part is about Parshuram's family, second is about the antagonist (?), Kartavirya Arjun and third is about the man of the hour, Parshuram. But throughout the book, the evil is rising in the background. What I loved about the book is that it is filled with mythological information and the scientific explanations of 'what could have been'. Another thing was that whenever I heard the story of Parshuram, Kartavirya Arjun was already a villain, no explanation, just a messy king drunk with power but this book explains what went wrong and how it happened. A very easy yet gripping read. Congratulations to Dr. Vineet Aggarwal and Best of luck for the future endeavors!
The lesser known mortals of Indian mythology seen in a new & insightful light!
Many Indians will know of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu but seldom do any of us know any avatar aside of Lord Ram and Krishna. This book is the life story of Parshuraam, the warrior avatar of Lord Vishnu. The Legend of Parshuraam methodically retraces his life beginning with a perspective of how things had shaped up in the generation that ruled prior to him in Nabhivarsh (older name for the Indian subcontinent). The book also beautifully highlights the softer elements of the man who is best known as a killing machine. It is a layered story with a series of subplots each delving into the human psychology and the complexities that emanate from people trying to manipulate others to get their way. It explains in a subtle way the unknown ramifications of a series of binary choices that people are faced with and the outcome that leads them to paths they would not have imagined in their wildest dreams, akin to the butterfly effect. Feel proud of Dr Vineet Aggarwal and feel happy to know that he has matured beautifully as a writer. The earlier book Vishwamitra has been a good warm up to this staggering feat, the future classic (fingers crossed): The Legend of Parshuraam. Kudos Doc & cheers!!!
The Legend of Parshu-Raam, Simple, gripping and interesting read.
Everything about this book is pure perfection, right from the detailed description of each character to each event which one can visualize while reading (Pushpak vimana’s description is bang on) and thorough research of un-touched side of legendary action hero which makes this book a tightly bound storyline. There are a lot of back stories. This is much needed for people who are not familiar with them.
The story goes on tell how situations prevailing before his birth forced a Brahmin of Alambayin gotra -Raam turns out to be the Bramhakshtriya Parshu-raam-The wielder of the axe.
Dr. Vineet has managed to keep a perfect balance, between true mythological facts and fresh use of his imagination. Plus, he has maintained the authenticity of the period very well.
If you love to read mythology, you're in for a treat with ‘The Legend of Parshu-Raam’. — with Vineet Aman Aggarwal.
Fabulous book on one of the most fascinating characters of Indian mythology. Dr.Vineet Agarwal, sticks to the original Purana, giving his interpretation, without deviation. And fortunately, does not inject pseudo science, or force fit contemporary events. Interestingly the title character actually makes his appearance half way in the book. The first half, is more on Parashuram's lineage, his parents, his ancestors, and the gradual transformation of Kartyavira Arjun, the antagonist, from a just, wise ruler to a merciless tyrant. The machinations of the Naga, Asur tribes are well depicted. While Dr.Agarwal does explore the inter relations between the Naga, Asur and Kshatriya clans, his language is far better than the vastly overrated Amish Tripathi's. And no teen speak to make it reach out to younger audiences. This is some one who knows his history, mythology and philosophy well, unlike Tripathi's half baked theories. And that in itself is a reason to read this book.
Everyone knows Parshu-Raam as an avatar who massacred kshatriyas. But what made him a slayer is a story seldom narrated. There is a lot of mystery around this mythological character and I was very glad when I found this book written by Dr. Vineet Aggarwal. The book gives an in depth insight into the political situation prevailing before and after Parshu-Raam’s birth that forced him to take up his axe. What I loved in the book is the simplicity with which the story flows and the way new characters are introduced at the right time. The book is nicely paced and every chapter has something new to offer. The author is very good in establishing relationships between the characters because of which it is very easy to relate to each one of them. In all, I loved reading the book and would definitely recommend it!
Lord Parshuram is worshipped mostly by Brahmins and a few tribes in remote areas. I always wished to know more about him. Read more about him. But there isn't much written about him. Out of fear for him or the fact that he is Chiranjeev, meaning still alive, that is the puzzling question. I came across this book via Goodreads and quickly added it to my "to-read" shelf. I didn't expect much from this book as the author is not well known or at least I wasn't aware of him. But as I started reading this, It turned out to be engaging book. There is no part of this book which is boring. The fluid writing which gains velocity as it progresses. It's hard to put down this book though I had to do this many times. If you are a fan of Indian Mythology, You cannot afford to miss this.
i want this to be made as movie... rajamouli needs to take a look it... awesome narration. i know the two stories of vishwamitra and parashu ram, but i found they are related after reading these two books...
Again an amazing book by my friend dr vineet Agarwal. An interesting mythological story of one of the legends. A must read even for who has never been or is reading a mythological book for first time.
Wonderful book on Parshu raam. There are many great Writers who have written great books but none explored the mighty story of parshu raam.nice experience reading this book
It is one of the best books I have read, it provides information to the very extent I love it, and the scenes are well narrated some of the information that the author has provide is even not available on google. The book is not only about the legendary Parshu-Raam but also about kartivirya Arjun and how he became the worst ruler of dharma and his adharmic acts that Raam became Parshu-Raam. Many people in our country do think very highly of Parshu-Raam without even giving one thought about his life or why he became what he became. This book can help those people get their thoughts right.
This book contains true anecdotes and incidents from the past which however seemed fantasy to me; not denying their credibility. This book touched my soul. Thank you
The legend of Parshuram is a great and must read for all mythological lovers. Author has narrated the whole epic in such a simple way which is very easy to comprehend. It was as if the whole saga was witnessed by me. This book is perfect blend of psychological mythogical and scientific world. Author has captured the details in a way which can very well take you to the times of devs, asuras, nagas. Each adhaye of this book talks about the characters which ultimately shaped up the legend himself. Author has very nicely mentioned the life journey of Lord Parshuram which definetly leaves the reader to explore more. A must read book on one of the warrior of mythological times which seems to be not so covered. I would like to thank Dr Vineet for amazing book.
what a brilliant style of writing!.I got hooked to this book and finished it in 9 days. The events considered mythology have been very pragmatically put forth by the author with cogent explanations. The book helped me to expand my knowledge of ancient Hindu sages and seers and at the same time dispelling many misconceptions I had about my own culture. One of the reasons why many urban Indians do not appreciate,I believe, their scriptures and stories their grandmothers told them as kids is because the nature of events of Hindu scriptures were too fantastic, too magnanimous to fathom back then, which lacked empirical ground then which did make them appealing to our imagination as kids but we lost belief in as we grew up in a contemporary scientifically inclined environment. But the author has very convincingly stitched the occurrences of those events with suitable explanation to make them practically fathomable. As 'science' is advancing and the theory of multiverses has now been accepted by the scientists world over, and I read somewhere that doctors are now starting to work on head transplantation which, by the way, finds mention in Hindu scriptures already,I believe these legends are not really legends but were real people with extraordinary powers obtained through other means, call it magic or meditation or whatever. And this book telling Shri Parshuraam's story, whom we know only as a 5 minute livid character in Ramayan changes perceptions in a big way. All in all,a wonderful, captivating read with just the right lexicon and imagination at places which is only fair as it talks about events that have happened over thousands of years. Its a 'Goodread'
I loved Vishwamitra, so I was definitely going to get my hands on Parshu-Raam. Glad to say it didn't disappoint. I found the book a little slow paced at first, but then it picked up. So I would say it was appropriately paced. I think the best part about the book was that you really want to know what's going to happen next, but you can't increase your pace or skim through some lines, because the research is not just shown in the overall storyline, but also in small, day to day things in between, like, for example, the feast. I had the opportunity to talk to the author about it, and found that every little thing mentioned in the book is based on research. The genre isn't the same as Dan Brown's, but the research is certainly as top class as his. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters, because this isn't based on any of the cliche characters of Hindu mythology, and this book surely added to my knowledge. But even for those who would probably not enjoy the characters or the story, the research will impress you. So couple the story of a unique, and legendary character of Hindu mythology paced appropriately, to say the least, with excellent research and the book is an easy 5-star.
simply loved this book... It flows smoothly as a continuation to the first book vishwamitra, and not only tells in detail the story of parshuraam but also how both these sages are linked to each other. The in-depth research done by Dr. Vineet reflects clearly in the content and also in the minutest details with which every scene is described..that you can almost watch it in your mind. Another thing I really liked in the book is the message conveyed through the dialogues of the characters..a lot can be learnt from their lives.. The plots have been interestingly placed and the story has been narrated very well. A must read book for all.. Waiting for the next part Mr. Author....

Good story telling. The author uses good prose and language and makes it a page turner. Interesting backstory of Lord Parshu Raam. However, I feel that the author spent too much time on it. The actual legend of Parshu Raam began at about 75% of the book and was forcefully winded up in a few pages leaving the reader feeling cheated. I am not complaining about the backstory. It was a good read but I picked up this book as I was really interested in Parshu Raam's story and journey. I wish this book was divided into two parts, the first being the origin/backdrop story of Parshu Raam and the second one being about his journey around the globe, how he fought and became the legend that he is.
An action packed performance by Parshu-Raam as well as Vineet
The book builds the character perfectly along with various simultaneous plots. While reading this book you could actually imagine many of the actions happening in front of your own eye. The book is totally action packed and gives an insight on the situations which made Raam a "Parshu-Raam". Author has very well delivered the message in the book that "The choices you make define your destiny". The book is perfect blend of mythology and fiction. Hats off to the author.
It's probably the best book out there on not so popular incarnation of Lord Vishnu.I always thought Parshu-Raam is the angry form of Dharma.Well, the writer's approach in explaining the events that lead Raam,a brahmin boy to become the Parshu-Raam who killed the mighty king Kartavirya Arjuna is quite impressive. Even if you're not so great fan of mythology, you would enjoy it,cause it's no less than a fictional adventurous movie if you have good imaginary skills. The author's style of writing is Informative,Clarity, and fact oriented. Curious about his next book.
Herculean efforts at the amazing research behind the book shows up every bit, the intertwined yet clearly presented storyline is superb, and the little specific details add reality to the presentation. Hats off to you dear Author ! :)
The Legend Of Parshu-Ram is an intelligent, in-depth description of the facts and the life of Lord Parshu-Ram, which I was not aware of. I wish the budding and daring Author who picked up such a side character for his second book a resounding success in his further ventures.
