I was attracted by the setting of Fort Larkin in Dakota territory in 1876 and this turned out to be a quality read. Ambitious Captain Thomas Maynard is sent to identify the killer of the General and a corporal at the frontier outpost as the aftermath of Custer's disaster looms large. There is only one Indian attack, but the fascinating interviews with the officers, one of whom must have committed the crime, and the wife of one with whom Englund was having an affair, lead plausibly and un-dramatically to the solution. This has rounded characters and a great setting.
