The story starts off with Nicholas Drummond going aboard the "Dixie Belle" to see the lady gambler "Aimee Fortune"and to sit in on a game.
What he doesn't expect is the young & beautiful girl before him.
( And of course he has to have her )
She in turn is wary of him but attracted at the same time.
Until he keeps winning & Aimee suspects he is cheating!
At this point she has lost all her money, she started gambling to pay off her fathers debts & to have a nest egg for the coming of the war.
So Nick challenges her to one more game..if she loses a night spent with him..she wins..she gets all the money.
She needs this money so agrees, of course she loses..pays her "debt" to him, but pays a bigger price 9 months later.
Although carrying another mans child Beau Trevor offers marriage & to raise the child as his own. Again Aimee loses this hand as her new husband is killed in the war & she is left alone to raise her son in a run down plantation due to the war.
Enter Captain Nicholas Drummond into her life again as he takes command of her home as Union Headquarters.
Without spoiling the rest of the story, I really enjoyed because it was filled with revenge/betrayals/misunderstandings & renewed love in the back drop of the civil war.
I picked this book up for the beautiful cover alone, but not knowing the author.
Karla informed me the author is AKA Connie Mason!
One of my "back in the day" favorite authors, I pretty much have all the "oldies"
Karla & Misfit also kindly added the cover picture for me ( Thanks Ladies!)
A great read with lots of emotion from both characters..I will look for more books under the name Cara Miles.
