Children often wonder what is the purpose of everything that surrounds them. This charming illustrated story helps the reader discover how everyone is important and how something that seems to have no purpose for someone, can in fact be essential to others.
Falfoul's Trunk by Amal Nasser is about an elephant named Falfoul who does not like his trunk because he does not see any use in it. One day he was sitting under a tree when a flock of his bird friends came to ask him for help to stop a fire in the village. After saving the day, Falfoul realized how valuable his trunk actually was. This inspired him to find many more ways he could help people with his trunk such as using it to repaint the burned houses, watering trees, and letting kids with no toys use it as a swing.
The major themes of this story are loving who you are and helping others with what you have.
Falfoul's Trunk is a very simple book with an amazing message. I loved progression of the theme and how Falfoul ended up loving this part of himself he once resented. I also enjoyed the hints of African culture in the book such as the setting, character names, and in the illustrations.
I really enjoyed this book and I would definitely recommend it. This book can help children understand that what they may not like about themselves is so much more valuable than they realize. It also emphasizes finding ways to help others with your skills and talents like Falfoul did with his trunk. He could have just used it for himself, but instead he thought of ways other people could benefit from it. Additionally, the story is vey simple and easy to follow so any age group can read it. Great story!
