CAPTIVE TO HIS SAVAGE PASSION... A moan escaped Jana Greyson as this strong, handsome stranger invaded her lips with his demanding kisses. He had stolen her from her world, made her his prisoner, and now enslaved her with the trembling rapture of his hunger... igniting a white-heat that melted her will to resist.
SLAVE TO HER OWN DESIRE Commander Varian Saar had come from a place beyond imagining and claimed Jana for his own. His powerful hand left a fiery trail across her ivory skin, his cobalt eyes possessed her with their unrestrained longing...and now her fate rested in his quicksilver grasp. Forbidden partners ...forbidden love...and soon their mad, tumultuous union became a pledge as boundless as the universe itself, a promise to seek their future among the glittering stars.

This heroine is in my list of most annoying females ever! The way she kept going ga ga over H and chasing him in one way or the other was really not to my liking.

Usually I wouldn't dare to write a review before I finish a book completely but I don't even know if I'll manage to finish this one.EDITED: I finished this and bumped it up to 2 stars
This book sucks frankly.
For those of you that nitpick about grammar and spelling/typos, I unconsciously noticed about three typos. Other than that this book is sufficient if that's your major criterion for a book's worthiness.
First half of the book is lame and the last third of the book is far better.
...Rich Scientist Barbie Slave and her Rogue Ken Doll Space Commander Master
This story takes place in circa 1980's: The Heroine is a textbook Mary Sue. Jana is more beautiful than beautiful, Snow White's stepmother wouldn't haven't bothered with a curse and would have outright murdered Jana for being too beautiful. Jana is referred to as a...prize, a gem, a dainty creature, fill in superlative here more times than I took a breath while reading most of this book. She is a super genius medical researcher who hails from Texas, an only child and heiress to a billion dollar fortune who happened to have donated a huge chunk to some needy children and a virgin at age 24 on top of all of that. Did you read that? She went through accelerated years of school to become a top medical researcher, is beyond beautiful, is an heiress and a virgin at age 24. MMkay. Her name should be Rich Scientist Barbie.
Meanwhile, in space, despite that in the 1980's data was not uniformly available via any digital manner the valiant space kidnappers have somehow narrowed down which chattel they want to cherry pick off of poor backwards Earth. This of course includes the prize of all prizes, Rich Scientist Slave Barbie.
If you dare to read this book you will get your fill up to your eyeballs of descriptions of how genteel, charming, wonderful, innocent, intelligent, inquisitive and perfect Rich Scientist Slave Barbie is. What a mate she'll make for some lucky male who purchases such a beautiful alien! But remember, she's just a slave even if she is a formerly Rich Scientist Barbie, so she can't marry. Also note that the gallant handsome aliens that abducted these women feel guilty for doing so. That makes it all right amiright? As long as a man feels guilty for kidnapping, note to self, I'll feel free to pity his internal dilemmas for having to go through with such an act for such great reasons. Wait. There..isn't..a real..reason.
The story blithely says 'we don't have enough women and this is an accepted custom and you will be cherished'!. ..
I am not a super sensitive reader or a prude, I've read plenty of books with this premise (alien kidnaps Earthlings for mating or slavery or whatever)that managed to pull it off. I just found myself getting seriously pissed off at Varian and his cohorts through the majority of the book. I think it infuriated me ever more because Jana's character had very limited and minor reactions to the idea of being sold as far as I'm concerned. She was far too docile of a victim. Naturally if a person is in a situation where the people around you hold the power of life and death you can't afford to cause a one woman riot, but her internal dialogue/attitude seemed far too accommodating given her circumstances and the supposed promise of her genius mind and former life. The villains are the type that cackle and talk and expose themselves. I absolutely give brownies to the author on Ryker, however! He is a worthy foe and good all the to the end, smart and wily. The twist at the end also bumped this up one star for me. The major issue: you have to wade through a lot of empty buffer to get to the end of the road to the 'good stuff'. I'd say the twists and turns in this book remind me of a soap opera. Lots of grand schemes and machinations and fake deaths etc.
And in conclusion! If you like your exclamation points to have a strong presence in your books you are in luck! This is the book for you! There are probably at least five of them or more on each page!!!!!
Update as of 7/27/2012: I decided to re-read this book as part of my "Bodice Ripper Project" with Kay to see how much my views on it have changed since I was a young teenager. It is definitely not living up to what I remember in my head. In fact, it took me almost 4 days to read this book.
I am by no means a slow reader, I can usually knock out the average YA book in about 4-5 hours tops, so I figured a trashy romance novel would be a one shot project. Alas, it was not so. The writing in this book is ATROCIOUS. Hold on, that doesn't quite get my point across. Let me use thesauras.com to expand upon it: abhorrent, awful, bad, contemptible, despicable, disgusting, foul, grim, grody, heinous, hellish, horrible, horrid, loathsome, lousy, nauseating, obnoxious, odious, offensive, repellent, reprehensible, repugnant, repulsive, revolting, rotten, stinking, terrible, vile, wretched. Okay, hopefully I have made my point by now. If I haven't, here, try this:
Hopefully you're starting to get my point.
This novel starts out from Jana Greyson's point of view. She is... well, your typical perfect Mary Sue. Her parents died tragically leaving her a huge wealthy estate. She is loved by everyone. She has obtained a masters in research science by the age of 24. Yes, 24. She donated half of her wealth to a "save the children" foundation... and, wait for it ... she's a virgin.
She's also the "perfect earthling specimen" to another galaxy of aliens that look exactly like humans... but are more handsome/beautiful. They of course had a plague unleashed on them that made all of their women barren, so they passed a law stating that women from other planets could be kidnapped and forced to be sex slaves and breeders. Of course, none of the women fought their new life, because they were all thrilled to be having sex with these magnificent aliens!
This introduces us to Varian Saar, the male protagonist. I'm pretty convinced that Stephanie Meyer must have read this book before she wrote Twilight, because he is the cookie cutter "I love you but I'm going to treat you like shit just because I can, even though you're my captive so you can't even say no if you don't like it." In his head he's constantly waxing on about how much he loves Jana, how beautiful she is, how he's never met anyone like her, but when he talks to her, he insults her, pisses her off, at one point he even punches her in the face causing her to fall backwards and slam her head on a table. Instead of having her checked, he just leaves the room and she proceeds to pass out for the next 12 hours before someone else notices that she's injured and has lost a mass amount of blood from her head.
Edward Cullen, is that you?
So, Jana is supposed to be extremely mature, graceful, thoughtful, and poised... yet everytime you turn a page in this book, she's shrieking something.
She's constantly pissed at and hates her captor, but the next paragraph she fancies herself in love with him, thinks him the most alluring creature she's ever met, and wants to bone him. About halfway into the novel, they are playing a game of chess, and they decide that whoever wins can ask anything they want of the other person. The only stipulation is that Jana cannot request her freedom or to return to Earth. Of course, Jana wins... so what does she ask for (you find yourself asking)?
She asks Varian to train her in the "art of sex" for the next two weeks before her auction to whoever ends up buying her as a breeder.
I can't even finish this review right now because just thinking about this book makes me want to hurl it across the room again. I shall finish it tomorrow, and hopefully not be quite as cruel as the first half.
Original Review from years ago: (aka: What the FUCK was I thinking?!)
This was one of those "screw it I want some mindless fluff" books that I read years ago. I actually found it pretty entertaining and a decent story for the type of novel that it is. I wound up reading the entire four book series. It's by no means a great literary piece of work, but if all you're looking for is a fun story and some mindless sex scenes, these books are for you.
I think it really is the author. Have to love authors that are snitty to reviewers! I hope she never sees this one, because it is NOT going to be very nice.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
You see, my brother and sister were avid readers. The former liked sci fi, mystery and action and adventure novels and comics, while my sister had a big box full of the typical romance novels. I am fortunate that my sister didn't care much for me when we were growing and therefore it was my brother who had the most influence on my tastes, hence the big X-Men collection I am soon to share with my daughters.
However, I did sneak into her collection one day and decided I wanted to read one to see what it was about. Trust me to find the cheesy romance that involves an alien sex slave trade!
"Abducted by Commander Varian Saar of the starship Wanderlust, lovely Jana Greyson found herself high about her native Texas in a world beyond her imagination. A helpless pawn in an intergalatic struggle, Jana knew her handsome captor (WHO HAS AN EVIL SEXY TWIN BROTHER) held her fate in his powerful grasp. And now he was stealing her heart as well. Their passion was forbidden, their desire was undeniable, and their love soon blazed as brightly as the stars!"
I gave up. I struggled to get past the part where the h wakes up, skimmed quite a bit, skimmed quite a bit of book 2 (because the tale was too convoluted for just one book apparently) and... I can't believe the HEA. Further, the fact that there is a HEA makes me wonder about the h's supposed intelligence.
There were other things...
The h is 23 - I think, has a phD (really?!) is a wealthy heiress, gorgeous, etc. I get it - she's perfect. She's apparently so brilliant or something that she's been on the news, which is how the "H" (and I use that term loosely) becomes aware of her.
The "H" - is a prince. Gorgeous (of course) with a deranged half brother (of course) whose mother's coloring "was" (she's supposedly dead) just like the h. He's sent on a mission to collect females for breeding purposes - apparently someone loosened a virus once upon their population and the females that survived it were either sterile or too young. They strongly prefer to get unattached, orphan females cuz they handle the transition better (meaning, they don't pine for things like parents, husbands, and kids they were stolen from).
So she's kidnapped, fondled by "H" while drugged (ick). He apparently threatens her if she doesn't cooperate, promises not to sell her after beginning a relationship with her, sells her anyway (it's fake but she doesn't know that)... eventually, she ends up in his half brother's hands. She marries his half brother. Huh. Of course, half brother's mother is still alive (and v much as deranged as her son). She's also sleeping with her son (gag). Book ends with the h's apparent rescue.
The sequel starts out with the h back in the brother's clutches, only not because brother is dead - "H" is lying through his teeth and pretending to be brother. I read enough in the skimming to know h suspected him from the start, but he managed to convince her otherwise through chicanery. He did eventually come clean - I read that little drama. It was beautiful to behold. However, it was less than 100 pages from the end so apparently she forgave him rather fast.
So I came to the conclusion, while attempting to convince myself to finish the book, and the sequel, and the other two about others...one may be their son...that the "H" was a first class idiot, and a user. And the fact that the h apparently forgave him *again* made me think she wasn't nearly the genius she was made out to be. So... I'm going to pick up something with far less pretentious characters and a less convoluted and annoying plot.
I loved this book. I absolutely can not believe it was published in 1992. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was fantastic! I love these type of books...Where the women gets abducted from Earth and falls for her savior.
Solid 4.5 stars. The only reason I took off a half a star is because some of the dialogue was cheesy but now knowing it was written so long ago.. it kind of makes sense.
I am very much looking forward to the next book. Sad it isn't in audio format yet but hopefully it will be!
Admittedly, my review is biased because this is the first grown up romance story I ever read. I stole this book from my mother in the 5th grade and read it to my friends at school (shocking I know).
I wanted to be Jana Greyson and grow up to marry Varian Saar. This story was before it's time because sci-fi bodice rippers were not the norm in 1986.
This story is kind of corny but I love the character so much.
The very first time that I read this novel I was only 11 or 12. It really wasn’t all that racy; just to warn you if you like steamy romances. I probably shouldn’t have read it, since after all; I stole it from my mother’s shelf.
I honestly fell in love with the story. It probably had some very great impacts on my life. The story is a slave romance; a man kidnaps and enslaves a woman to sale at auction because women are no longer alive in their alien race so they must breed with women they steal from other planets.
It was a beautiful story with just enough action for me to stay interested, but also with lots of slow paced falling in love for those of your that are super lovey-dovey fans.
What should tell you the most that it was an empowering novel is how much it affected my life. Because of this novel I realized how fascinated and infatuated I was with the slave romance genre. Many of my novels in the works, and currently Infinity’s Touch, have elements of ownership within them. My toes curl just thinking about some handsome alien purchasing an innocent virgin and making her want ecstasy with every little touch and forceful moment.
Although, this novel was a slave romance novel it didn’t have near rape scenes or any tie-her-down-and-make-her-want-it scenes. Their relationship was led by her desire to be with him, and he was very much a gentleman.
I really want to read the rest of the novels in the series, as well as re-read this novel again and again.
Mars needs women... need I say more? OK... yes, I do! I read this book at least 17 years ago. I still remember because it was sooooo bad. The female lead was kidnapped by space aliens. She fell in love with the captian but then was kidnapped by the evil brother of the captain of the spaceship.
Early on, we, the readers, find out that a meteor is hurtling toward Earth and will wipe out the planet. That is one reason that the aliens are taking earth women (saving us, I suppose). At about the midway point we find out that there is a way to save the earth. Toward the end, the captain kidnaps the female lead's best friend just in case the plan doesn't work.
That's it... we never find out if the Earth is saved. Unless my book was missing a page, the author never tells! I suffered through the end of the book just to find out if they avert disaster. Arrgh! OK it still bugs me. Maybe that is why I remember this book.
I think this author normally writes Western Romances. Maybe those are better. This was just flat out painful!
**Audiobook Review** This was my first Janelle Taylor's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Saar Series, an amazing Sci-Fi Romance. I loved it! Varian and Jana's story is beautiful, suspenseful, action packed and captivating. The storyline is original, and the world building is well done. Andrea Emmes did an outstanding job with the narration. If you like Sci-Fi Romance, you should like this one! I highly recommend it. Looking forward to listen to Stardust and Shadows, the second book in the Series.
Wow! There us so much going on in this story. Alien abduction, trying to save the earth from annihilation, secret alliances, spies, lust, lies, hidden agendas, betrayal, kidnapping. jealousy, and interstellar love. That's a lot to set the groundwork for this story! It's very interesting. I enjoyed listening to this story narrated by Andrea Emmes. She does amazing with all the different voices and accents. 🎧audiobookobsessionreviewer🎧
Moondust & Madness by #JanelleTaylor is a throwback from the mid 1986 & is book 1 of the series. I read this book way back when (it was my mom’s book!) & I have been thinking about it for weeks. So I decided to get the E-book to read it again!
Dr Jana Greyson, PHD is kidnapped by starship Commander Varian Saar to be a sold as a charl (charl’s have no rights or protections nor are they married to their owners) aka mate for his people. He plans on using her as bait for his half brother & then to auction her off to be a charl. Varian is extremely attracted to Jana, but his half brother has threatened to kill any woman he is involved with so he is fighting the attraction to her. Jana is confused as Varian keeps pulling her towards him & then pushing him away. Varian & Jana play a game of Laius (similar to chess) & Jana wins the game which was an open wager. She asks him to give her physical sex education. 🤣 Varian finds out he has a spy on his starship when pictures are sent to him of Jana on the ship. Jana is sold to Draco & she is devastated as she thought that Varian when buy her. In truth, Varian gave the money to Draco to buy Jana. Varian comes back weeks later to “buy” Jana back from Draco. Jana is very upset to learn of the ruse. Jana forgives him, then is kidnapped & given to his evil half brother. She is held captive for weeks. Varian finds her & rescues her. They get engaged. 🥰💜
First book in the series. First for me by the author. The narrator Andrea is the one that got me interested in the story. This is a Sci-Fi story. Heroine is Jana Greyson. Hero is Varian Saar. Varian came to earth and saw Jana , he knew he had to have her . He lands on his spaceship and whisps her away . Up in space she (Jana) looks down at earth and knows she is where she belongs , as time goes on she knows her heart belongs to Varian. Grab it and see how Varian reacts to his slowly growing feelings . This is a great story but it just kept on going on and on . It was a bit to long for the story Andrea Emmes Performance was great. Her voice is very strong , soothing and calm
I enjoyed the storyline of this book and the characters were good and likeable however I felt that it went on a bit too long. I found myself losing interest as the book went on and on and on. Andrea saved this book for me as her performance was fantastic. I would definitely listen to another book from Janelle but not from these characters. #audiobookobsessionreviewer
This was my first read and I fall crazy in love with this Book. This is when author's knew how to tell a Love story. I know that there's 2 more novels but can't recall their names. This is the only Book that stuck in my Head because it was so Good and believe me I have read thousands of Books.
Good story! I feel like a few parts were drawn out especially in part one. Other than that I thought it was a good take on aliens. I was hoping more would happen with Ryker but looks like that will happen in book 2.
When reading this you are hoping for the best for Jana and Varian! Ready to read the second book! I would recommend this book to someone that likes romance and thrilling adventures!
3 1/2 stars. Book 1 in the series. It was a good storyline but way too long for my liking and too many characters. I scored it 4 stars as 3 1/2 not an option. Parts of the story, I'm sure, weren't necessary which sometimes made the book boring.
The book starts with these two sentences: ‘It was a splendid night for a special party. Dr. Jana Greyson was in a happy mood, although miffed at being tardy.’ Enough said
An older friend recommended this author, as a Georgia gal, a talented romance writer, and a prolific series writer. I like the science fiction trappings, as Jana Greyson is depicted as scientist, but apart from one scene, the main character never used her research skills. Most of the sci fi elements seemed to be lifted straight from Star Trek, such as Star Fleet, transporters, and food replicators. However, the original version was published in the 1980s, when Star Trek ruled the small screen.
Overall, my friend wasn’t wrong, as there is considerable writing talent here, but I must also warn that this book is really long when it could be a lot tighter. Many romance writers are repackaging their back lists, and this yarn could stand some editing. There were only one or two errors, but the repetition got to me after a while. I got through Moondust and Madness, but I doubt I will attempt the rest of the series.
This morning my twenty something year old daughter said to me, "Mom, you used to read a lot of romance novels. which were the best ones you read?"
I thought for a moment, hands down the Diana Gabaldon, "Outlander" series, and "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks were my most memorable.
However, I said to her, you know though there was this one book though, I remember the name of the main character, it was a space romance. "Jana Grey..." I searched the internet and found it! This book right here. I remember loving the setting, the characters, and even nearly thirty years later this book is etched in my memory.
My daughter says she intends to read this book now.
I read this book as a young adult and was motivated by it to start writing my own stories. Unfortunately, I didn't think it was as good with the re-read; the characters did not seem fully developed, reactions were at times unbelievable (how could she forgive him so quickly after each of his transgressions?, why was he so selfish?), the conversations didn't flow (each character spoke too long without allowing the next character to speak), and there was too much telling rather than showing.
This was a reread that did not age well in my opinion. I like Janelle Taylor, but some of the actions of the MMC were not sitting well with me. Also the MFC was angry but also allowed things to happen to her veruses standing up for herself. I have the other books in the series but I don't know if I will be rereading them.
My First Romance Novel and I Loved it. It was fun of action and easy to follow the characters. This Title is one that I have never forgotten. I have lots of Good Books in my Head but only can remember the Best of the Best and this is #1 for me.
