I highly recommend this book for those who would like an accessible overview of Marine Sciences.

I'm using this book as a learning and reference tool as part of my continuing education as a citizen scientist (I'm a Puget Sound Beach Watcher). Over all, I am pleased with my purchased. I selected this book after reviewing several at a nearby university library. I reviewed a copy of the 8th edition and opted to purchase the most recent edition (the 9th, released in 2012). It was a good choice. I like the writing, organization, boxed essays, web resources, and the illustrations and photos.

I meant to start at the beginning and work my way sequentially, but instead I find myself working my way through as my interests dictate. This week, for example, I was interested in finding out more about oysters, the rocky intertidal zone and marine ecology. I read through sections of chapter 7 (on marine invertebrates) and then took in all of chapters 10 (Marine ecology) and 11 (Between the Tides). Concepts/definitions that are detailed in other areas of the book are summarized in boxed sections of text and there are referenced pages for the more detailed information. This eased catching up while skipping around.

The web resource page noted on the back of the textbook is also nice. Users of the web reference page can select individual chapters and find learning tools, web resources, and suggested readings. I was a little bummed that the flashcard feature didn't work (I didn't get a access code with my book), but even so, I'm still happy with the textbook and the associated web resources.

Castro's Marine biology is a lovely introductory book on the subject. Biology is a descriptive science, and this book is equally descriptive - although it's a textbook, it flows smoothly as a novel. It's liberally peppered with illustrations and photos, which makes for a great reading experience. I'm no biologist, but for reading and learning from this book, one doesn't have to be. An interest in the workings of the deep blue ocean is enough.
