As prequels go, this was a good one. Evie and Matt have been best friends forever. As they grew up, their closeness couldn't be denied. But as Evie matured, her feelings for Matt changed. She fell in love with her best friend and he couldn't see it. He still treated her as a friend, warmed his bed with many women, and never really looked at her. No matter how hard she tried to get him to see her as someone more to him, he firmly placed her in the friend zone. So when she finds out that he intends to leave town after graduation, she makes one more ditch effort to get him to realize what they could be. And risks her young tender heart in the process.

The author did a great job of capturing the unrequited young love experience. It was easy to imagine Evie's anguish and Matt's ignorance. I wasn't completely sold on the idea of them as a couple, but I admired Evie's determination to make it so. I just felt so bad for her. Matt was so cavalier with her feelings, and I hated that he DID know how she felt and still nothing, and I didn't like that Evie allowed herself to be hurt. I get that her feelings couldn't be denied, but poor thing needed someone to tell her to just move on, without her having to be forced to. Matt was just a boy and we can't expect huge things from him. Not every young man is swoon worthy, right?

I'm off to find out what happens when these characters reunite in Hot Pursuit. I hope Evie makes him grovel hard core!

“My God, I feel so many confusing things when my eyes meet this girl’s. She’s like a little sister to me—and she’s not like a sister at all. She’s someone I want to protect, and someone I want to taste and touch and hold.”

This was great! I enjoyed reading Matt & Evie’s prequel story. I really enjoyed getting an insight into how it all began. It gave us a little background with their teenage life and what happened between them. 👍🏻

Quick little prequel novella to Matt and Evie's HEA. It's so nice to know what happened in their past, and now I wish I had time to re-read Hot Pursuit.

Reckless Heat: The Prequel to Hot Pursuit- a HOT Novella is a 2016 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve followed this series from the beginning and a lot has taken place since HOT Pursuit with the storylines developing more and more as we go along. But, it was nice to go back to the beginning to gain a little more insight into Evie and Matt’s backstory.

This novella length story is written in full blown New Adult style with the dual first person perspectives of Matt and Evie.

Normally, NA is not my bag, but in this case, because I knew the characters, this set up was actually kind of cool, despite the high degree of angst.

This story sets the stage for what happens in Hot Pursuit, so, of course I already know how things turn out for this couple, but now we have a few more details which provides greater insight into what propels Matt forward and how the couple’s wires got crossed that last evening they spent together.

Still, despite the years of heartbreak, I can’t help but think things turned out the way they were meant to in the end. It’s just too bad, they never got a chance to clear the air first, however, this story shows us how the coupled transitioned from being best friends to the point of falling in love. I love the friends to lovers romances, almost as much as…. The second chance at love trope. ( in HOT Pursuit)

The author did a fantastic job of recreating all that high school drama and angst, while providing us with more details about Matt’s background, which is very hard, and will make you want to hold him and take care of him, and of course helps the reader gain a little more understanding of why he made the choices he did, the way he did.

This story was like tripping down memory lane for me and reminds me again of why I fell in love with this series in the first place.

Copy Courtesy of Author Lynn Raye Harris....:)

I had my day perfectly planned yesterday. First up read this short little novella about the HOT guys, then start a new book after that, which I have been looking forward too.....Sounds good right???? Well damn you Lynn Raye Harris, after I read this prequel about Matt and Evie, I immediately needed another fix of this awesome couple, so instead of starting my new book, I found myself re-reading Book 1 in the series and because this is one of my all time fave romantic suspense series, I now feel like re-reading ALL the books....... Guess it just goes to show what a fantastic read these books are!!!!

As I said this is a prequel to where it all started with Matt and Evie. The book takes place in high school before Graduation and it allows us a sneak peak into what happened to the best friends that led to there slightly hostile meeting 10 years later....

Don't want to give too much away, as its a sweet and short read and is perfect for all the HOT fans out there, who want another hit of their fave series..... I am off to start another re-read!!!!:)

Reckless Heat is the prequel to Hot Pursuit, Book 1 in Harris's Hostile Operations Team Series. It's a short and angst-filled introduction to Matt and Evie, who are high schoolers (he's a senior and she's a junior). They have been childhood best friends since they were 6 and 7. But hormones have entered the picture and they step over the line and everything changes. And then Matt takes off for the military academy leaving a broken-hearted Evie behind.

Told in dual points of view, I thought it served its purpose. Since I started after these two books were already published, I read the prequel first and I'll continue on with what I hope will be a second chance between these two in the next installment -- now older and more mature and ready for a happily-ever-after.

"Reckless" is a very fitting title for this novella. This is the prequel to Hot Pursuit and a very quick read. Obviously you know Evie and Matt will get their HEA (duh), but this is the backstory to their first and last night together before Hot Pursuit picks up. They're childhood bff's, but as they mature, Matt never sees Evie as more than a little sister. Evie is in love with him and is convinced once he really sees her he'll feel the same. Then right before he leaves town to go to West Point she pulls out the big guns (mini skirt) and makes her move. After he de-virginizes her he says they can now be friends with benefits. There's a line from Evie's point of view that hurt my heart and captured Matt perfectly "even though we were just as close as it's possible for two people to be, his view of me hasn't changed. Or hasn't changed much." I thought it was interesting he knew she had a crush on him but never really saw her as more than a friend. He was also a very busy manwhore, so your heart pinged for Evie as she realized he never saw her that way. Confession time - I haven't read books 1-4. I picked up on the series at 5 and have read every book since and am a huge fan. It's now time for me to start from the beginning and this was a great incentive. Plus, I'm totally Team Evie and ready to watch Matt fall.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

Friends to lovers plot gets me every time. Plus this was a Kindle freebie. Who could ask for more?

Reckless Heat was not bad, but it was not anything special either. It's obviously a prequel to a series and introduction to the history between characters, because it ends without no resolution. But, I am not intrigued enough to continue and read the next book in this series because I didn't like the hero at all.

Before there was Evie and Matt...

...well, there was little Evie and Matt.

I absolutely adore when authors do a 'series' prequel -- especially when we've already read so much of the series. Matt and Evie were book 1 in this HOT team, and being able to go back and actually 'witness' the event that had Evie hiding from Matt when he first walked into the salon after ten years away... I just loved it.

In this prequel, we learn how Matt and Evie's friendship started, and we watch as both grow up -- and begin to notice the other as more than just their rough-and-tumble, in the dirt with frogs and worms, friend.

I felt that Lynn Raye Harris's attempt at this new adult feel, friends-to-lovers romance was done extremely well. When she first announced this project, I was excited. As soon as I finished this, I went back to re-read HOT Pursuit, because I seriously was in need of Matt and Evie's HEA. A great quick read that will keep LRH/HOT readers happy, and may even give this series a few new readers.

Keep in mind this is a novella....and a prequel so it goes quick and since you sorta already know what happens it's not overly new BUT man oh man was Matt Girard a hot little man slut! I had forgotten about his man whorish ways but seeing perks of him and Evie from early on was great. Evie, she'll make you adore her in just the few chapters you get with her and while at points you'll want to shake Matt, you still want him too! This makes me want to pick up Hot Pursuit and read back through the series....and I may just do that soon! This is a must read for series fans and if you haven't started the series it's an excellent place to start!

The book is worth a higher rating, but it's not necessary to the series and can easily misguide people, leading them to avoid the series just because the hero (the heroine too, but not so much) is the teen of teens and all things YA.

Also, I can barely stand YA and all their drama (why they call them YA? They're teens, they're young, but they're not adults at all!) Yes, I knew it was YA, the very beginning of the couple "starring" the first book of the series (ten years before), but I had to read it because, well, when I start a series, I have to read it all. Lucky me, this is the only YA. The rest of the Hostile Operations Team series is all about hot (& H.O.T.) adult black ops soldiers.

Short, fast paced novella that shows the relationship between Matt and Evie before the events of Hot Pursuit (book 1 in the Hostile Operations Team series). I love these characters, and I love this glimpse into their teenage selves. It's the perfect prequel to the HOT series, and lends insight as to how Matt and Evie become the people they are at the beginning of Hot Pursuit. Harris mastered the teenage voices of these characters, and the novella has a New Adult feel to it that works wonderfully for the setting and characters. Definitely a must-read for fans of the HOT series.

Matt Girad frustrates the hell out of me...lol even though I know he is now a good guy and he is married to Evie, it's not easy reading about that first time, even though they were both kids, they both made wrong decisions it was still an emotional read, but I am glad Matt sorted himself out and became the man he is today.

Reckless Heat

This is the prequel to Matt and Evie. Back when they were in high school together. They were friends long before the time he graduated high school and left for West Point. Back when she wanted to take their friendship to another level.

Finally got around to reading this prequel to Matt and Evie’s story. I also read the bonus epilogue of their wedding after this and had a full circle moment.

Matt and Evie will always be number 1 for me and will always be my ultimate favs. Their story is so timeless and perfect. Best friends since they were little who made mistakes, grew apart and then found each other again? Yeah, perfect.

When you think about Evie loving Matt ever since she was little and him being her first, and then her last, it’s just so romantic. And seeing them happily married with twins. Ugh, heart wrenching.

The thought of Matt being a daddy to two little boys is so sweet and you already know he loves them with his entire being, just like he loves Evie.

It’s honestly so refreshing getting the beginning, the middle/re-finding of each other, and the happily ever after. Truly a full circle moment.

Oh boy. We can make some incredibly dumb decisions when we’re too young to know any better. Add to that inexperience: family dramas, expectations, and a roiling cocktail of hormones and feelings too big to know what to do with, and the choice that seems like the best one at the time could be the exact wrong one to make. That’s pretty much where Matt and Evie are at this point in their lives. I loved getting this introduction to the characters, but this prequel leaves them in such a tragic mess that I can’t wait to see where their full story goes from here.

Okay, first let me get this out there, I absolutely love this series and have loved every couple. But Matt and Evie were my first. The first couple I met, the first couple that made me want to throw my Kindle, and the first couple that literally made my give a big "Woo-hoo" when they finally got their HEA. I love seeing them in each book that came after, even if it's only a line or two. So, to see this slice of their teenage lives was achingly sweet and horrible at the same time. Once again I want to grab Evie and give her a hug and whisper in her ear that her heartbreak will be worth it one day. I want to grab Matt and hug him because he feels nobody loves him and punch him in the throat for hurting Evie like that. It also makes me want to reread their book.

So, what did I not like about this novella? I know this is just a book and everyone wants to read how wonderful sex is between your two leads. But at 17 and being her first time, Evie has not one, but two orgasms. I seriously don't know many, if any, women who had that kinda luck. I think high school would've been a whole lot more fun had I known guys like Matt.

Thanks to Lynn Raye Harris for the ARC.

Though I was afraid it would be a little weird going back again to before the beginning of the series, I couldn't resist giving it a try since I've loved all the other HOT books. The story takes us back to the late teenage years of Matt and Evie from HOT Pursuit (book one). If you've read book one, you already know the basics that Matt was Evie's best friend who ended up being her "first" then ditching her. This quick novella digs deeper and shows who Matt and Evie were back then and what their family situations were like and how their friendship had developed from childhood and turned to something deeper. You learn about why Evie offered herself to Matt and why he risked their friendship to take her up on her offer then leave her.

I enjoyed reconnecting with this couple so much that I ended up going back and reading HOT Pursuit again just minutes after finishing Reckless Heat. It was a great little addition to the HOT series.

I received an ARC from the author for review.

They are best friends even though Matt Girard is the guy everyone wants and Evie Baker comes from the wrong side of the tracks but now it’s time for Matt to see the woman she’s blossomed into instead of the tomboy in this riveting prequel to HOT Pursuit.

This story is a bit different from the HOT team stories but this story is something special. I was completely captivated by Evie’s first love romance as she sets out to take her and Matt’s relationship to the next level and while the story is a first love romance that adds a lot of depth to Matt and Evie’s characters because it provides insight into the past that caused all the emotional turbulence in their future romance.

I am quite partial to lagniappe and this story is my favorite kind because it adds to the book that I’ve read and because I was so captivated by their past and of course me being me, I had to go read HOT Pursuit again.

This is the beginning of Evangeline and Matt’s story. They were best friends until one day they grew apart. When Evangeline finds out he is leaving in three weeks she knows she has to tell him she loves him. She spends the three weeks trying to tell him. What happens when it leads to one night together and the words spoken after rip them both apart. Can they even be friends again or is this the end of everything? Matt is fighting his hatred of his father and his feelings for Evangeline but in the end will he ruin it all with a few misspoken words to the girl he loves?

This is the prequel to Hot Pursuit (Hostile Operations Team, #1) so make sure after reading this you move on to that book for more of Evangeline and Matt.

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.

I love Matt and Evie story. As your reading the story you can see and feel them falling in love. Even though Matt was not ready to submit to those feeling yet. The read was also emotion to see what Matt had to deal with, with his father and the need to get away. It was really sad for me. I love the fact that Evie was a strong young lady, that was there for him, that constant shoulder to cry on if needed. But he was afraid to go past the friend zone he didn't want to risk losing her friendship. Teen love is a hard place to be. To do it or not is grown up decisions. This book touch on many subjects that young adults deal with. I felt so bad for the both of them. It just made me want to read Hot Pursuit again.

Matt and Evie as teenagers, before West Point and Culinary Academy. This short novella is a look at the last three weeks they have together before Matt leaves. He has never noticed her as a woman before until she makes an effort. If you have read the H.O.T. series you know Matt, the Louisiana hottie who breaks out with Cajun French on occasion. We know a little about their younger years but now we get the whole picture. This was a great trip back into their friendship. As part of the review group I was given an early reviewer copy for my honest review.

This was a quick read that was quite enjoyable. It was a great look into the teenage versions of Matt and Evie and the events that led up to their falling out as well as their pasts. I enjoyed that their story was told from duel POV and gave the reader more insight into the characters. This also felt like a return to basics of where the series started. I would recommend this short read to others.

I absolutely loved reading about Matt and Evie's book, Reckless Heat. It was entertaining and refreshing to see how they started out. Best friends to lovers and second chance romance? I've said it before and I'll say it again: Lynn Raye Harris is an expert when it comes to these. Of course you won't see the second chance romance until you read Hot Pursuit. LOVED this book!

description

I normally stay far far away from high school romances. They're usually just so angsty, childish, and unbelievable. But I was interested in trying out this series, and I prefer to go in order, so I decided to give this one a shot. I'm so happy I did! It was surprisingly good, and now I'm super pumped for HOT Pursuit!

Evie and Matt met as children and have been best friends most of their lives. Over the last few years, Matt has separated himself a bit and become more of a wild child - fast cars, women, and drinking. But despite growing a little distant, Evie still loves him from afar.

This book starts a few weeks before Matt is set to graduate (Evie's a year younger), and Evie discovers he's been accepted to West Point. She's devastated that he'll be so far away because she's always hoped that Matt will notice how perfect they are for each other. She spends the rest of book trying to get him to think of her in a romantic way.

We also get a little glimpse into the Matt's difficult home life and learn why he wants to get away. Evie knows things are tough for Matt at home, but he's never shared all of it with her.

The book is a nice quick read. Really well written and easy to get through. I really enjoyed Evie, and even though Matt is kind of a jerky man-whore, I liked him, too.

This novella doesn't have a HEA, so you'll definitely need to continue on to see what happens. I'm really looking forward to seeing how these two manage to get back together.

Sixteen-year-old Evie Baker has been in love with her best friend Matt Girard since they were young children growing up together.

The girl from the wrong side of the tracks and the son of a senator grew a lifelong friendship despite their disparate backgrounds but now Evie wants Matt to see her as much more than an honorary sister.

Finding out that Matt has plans to go to West Point and not come back to the small town they both grew up in causes Evie to set in motion a change in their relationship that neither were adequately prepared for.

After things go spectacularly right for Matt and utterly wrong for Evie a lifelong friendship has bitten the dust and the two part ways without knowing if they would ever see each other again.

The beginning setup to the series is short but captures perfectly the bad boy/good girl scenario that plays out all the time when one person is more invested in the other and finds out the hard way that sex is not the be all end all answer to taking a relationship to a different level.

Luckily I have the next 4 full length novels in the series waiting for me to read already loaded onto my kindle app on my iPad Mini.

Rich, handsome, popular Matt Girard was everything hairdresser’s daughter, Evie Baker wanted, instigator in most of their childhood partner in crime antics…that was before puberty. Then Matt put distance between them having his pick of any girl in every class. Though Evie didn’t stop wanting Matt, indications are he's everything out of her reach.

Things change for males between childhood and adulthood. The teenage years… when they learn that some girls are just as anxious to explore sex as they are. And Matt Girard met plenty of those adding more tears to Evie’s pillow because she Matt hadn’t even seemed to notice she was a girl. Let alone the one waiting for him. Until she came up with a plan…

This short is a prequel to the H.O.T series and takes place 10 years before book one of the series with the same couple. Though it isn’t necessary to the series it is a fun outing and nice to see the beginning of original series couple. Though this reader now wants to go back and re-discover the Hostile Operations Team up close and personal.
