A PROMISE BROKEN Rowan Harper sacrificed her blood and her soul to keep her friend, Aleksei, alive—and in the process, broke a bond of sacred trust with her lover, Gabriel.  But her act of heroism wasn’t enough to stop the evil bent on tearing the world asunder. Newly turned vampires are slaughtering innocents, and those lurking in the darkness are threatening the people Rowan loves.   She may be Gabriel’s Promise, but it’s looking more and more like Rowan will belong to the demon of the Dark Realm instead. Born in England a very long time ago, I now call South Carolina home where I live with my wonderfully supportive family, who have come to learn that meeting deadlines translates to pizza for dinner! When not writing, I’m just like everyone else, trolling the internet looking for recipes (I love rhubarb) checking out cute animal videos (who knew baby owls were so adorable?) and trying to get through my never shrinking stack of to-be-read books!

I would love to hear from you. Feel free to contact me through my website: carlasmithauthor.com

FINAL DECISION:  This is an enjoyable adventure.  There is not much romance development but that doesn't bother me because there is a lot of plot development in this book.  I hope there is more to come because I have more questions.

THE STORY:  Rowen and Gabriel's story continues. Rowen goes deeper into the vampire world in this book.  At the end of Book 3, Rowen and Gabriel's friend Aleksei comes to her apartment injured and desperate for blood to save his life.  Rowen violates all the rules when she gives her blood to Aleksei despite being bonded with Gabriel.  Rowen also must deal with impulsive decision to force Gabriel to protect her friend's baby which might result in the severing of Rowan and Gabriel's relationship and her own demon who intends to claim her for himself.  This book also focuses on the Original Vampire Ryiel who joins Rowen and Gabriel as old enemies emerge.

OPINION:  I have enjoyed each of these book more than the last.  In this book, the characters continue to develop in their relationships.  As more characters become prominent in the stories, they enrich the book and it overarching storyline.

Gabriel and Rowen have some bumps in this book, but their connection feels more grounded and deep as their disagreements are worked out.  This book manages to resolve most of the lingering challenges to Gabriel and Rowen's relationship -- but there is still much to learn about their friends so I hope there are more books to come.

Rowen still has her impetuous streak, but she is learning some caution and has some calculated chances rather than just jumping in.  This book requires much trust between Gabriel and Rowen and it is nice to see them handle some difficult circumstances.  There are challenges -- especially for the possessive Gabriel, but they are working through their problems.

I was most intrigued in this book with the story of Ryiel.  I really want to know his full story even if we have to flash forward in time.

In conclusion, I thought this was a great addition to the series.

WORTH MENTIONING:  This book does not resolve all the questions raised.

CONNECTED BOOKS:  A VAMPIRE'S HUNGER is the fourth book in the Vampire's Promise series.  This series is better when the books are read in order because there are continuing storylines.

STAR RATING:  I give this book 4 stars. This review was originally posted on Top10RomanceBooks.com

And here, Rowan and Gabriel's story comes to an end.

A Vampire's Hunger was in parts humorous, sensual, and gruesome...with light at the end of a very dark, precarious tunnel.
Just desserts were dished out, and lose ends were tied up, even though on one or two occasions, I was sort of stumped (i.e. the whole scene with the siren and the Laycee's baby, for example). I also wanted more of that asshole blue-haired Kartel.
I loved the book's ending, as it showcased Rowan and Gabriel in the bar where they first met. Everything came full circle, like the very first and last scenes in The Lord of the Rings films, featuring a Hobbit door. I know - it may be a weird analogy, but it's what comes to my mind.

I'm still ruminating on the book, so I may have to re-edit (expand) this review once I can really step back and think about it some more. Still - I loved this saga, and I look forward to reading Aleksei and Anastaizia's story, in addition to whatever else Smith puts out!

Great ending

Rowan and Gabriel find themselves in as many difficult situations as always. Rowan is visited by a demon who has a contract with her to be married in25 years. This came after Laycee asked Gabriel to protect her daughter from vampires. Only for Rowan to find out that Gabriel had to sleep with the child when she was 25 years old and a virgin. Laycee has to break the contract with the demon, Gabriel has to break his contract with Laycee's daughter, and Gabriel has to find a way to stop Mattel from taking control of the vampires. All in the great ending.

While I enjoyed all the other books in the series I felt this final book was rushed. Though it was still a good book & all the story lines were wrapped up, though a few questions remained for me. I just felt you had all this build up, 3 books, and it was all solved in a few chapters.

I adore a good vampire romance and this book did not disappoint. This book brought a fiery lust into the life of Rowan in a devilish form.

I had such high hopes and expectations for the end of this series. I feel let down because I guess I built it up too much in my mind. The ending fell flat for me.

A Vampire's Hunger (Vampire's Promise 4) Carla Susan Smith

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Romance, Sci-fi and Fantasy

I’ve loved this series from the first book, and we’re finally in the wrap up. Its got some great secondary characters, as well as the gorgeous Gabriel and Rowan, his Promise.
Its been interesting reading, Carla has taken the usual vampire formats but given them a very different beginning, and some additions to the Originals such as a Promise, a kind of Soul Mate I guess, and a ....darn, can’t recall the exact word..a kind of steward, someone who’s always with the vampire, looking after him, helping him do what's necessary.

Rowan is of course, Gabriel's Promise, they’ve met through many lifetimes but this is the first time Rowan has recognised him, and been able to take up her role. Its quite complex some of the rules surrounding these guys.

So once more Rowan’s in trouble, giving in to her friend’s pleading to keep her baby safe she has got herself and Gabriel in a world of problems. She got entangled with a Demon in book two, has been trying to find a way out ever since, but after she made Gabriel vow to be the baby’s protector she opened up a way for the Demon to take her from Gabriel in time.
Then there’s Aleksei, who desperately needs her help at the start of this book, but doing so means she breaks a trust with Gabriel. She can’t just let him die though...he and Anazstazia are good friends of her and Gabriel.
She gets another visit from the Demon, taunting her and leaving her a present, and that really infuriates Gabriel.
Ryiel is trying to find an answer to the problem of the Demon, the b itch vampire Katya is with him and his steward in the isolated mountain area of his home, and of course Kartel and Petrov are still planning unspeakable destruction, something they’re all trying to prevent. Usual service for Rowan then...

I love this phrase right at the start “some quality time in his sarcophagus was needed” – it just sums up the relationship between Rowan and Gabriel where the abnormal, such as hours in a sarcophagus, becomes normal.
Its all action, lots of planning, murders, drama, and the usual mix ups that Rowan finds herself in. Its the final book though, so all the things that have been opened up in earlier books are now coming to a head, and the way they get resolved s very satisfying – except for the Bridal Chain stuff.
For me that wasn’t necessary, seemed to be adding some sexual inferences just for the sake of making the story a little more risqué. It wasn’t needed and had a bit of the “ick” factor for me. Just didn’t feel as though it matched the rest of the novels, dumbed the story down a bit...Still, that's just my view and its a small part of the overall so though it irritated me it didn’t spoil the story.

I’ve loved these four books, been a fun journey and a very satisfying ending, with this time of Rowan and Gabriel's lives wrapped up.

Of course there’s still the possibility of more from the story, as they start this new phase in their life. With vampires there’s no such thing as an actual ending, the story always continues when some are power hungry, and the Demons always looking for an opening. The story isn’t static, just this part of it that's finished, as with real life, things carry on behind this tale and I can see the potential for more books from this world.

Stars: Five, a great finish, fun drama and a very satisfying ending.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is book 4 of the Vampire's Promise series and is the second book of this series that I've read (also read book 3). Readers don't necessarily have to read the books in order in the series because the author provides good references to what happened in prior books. I found myself enjoying this installment a little bit more than the one prior. I appreciate that the author provides a back story into the vampire characters' pasts to really make the reader understand what they are thinking and decisions they are making. There was a lot of tension in this book between characters which helped with the story building (and I'm not just referring to that between Gabriel and Rowan's demon). Unexpected alliances are formed. I felt like it wasn't as saturated in sex as the prior one. I was a little shocked at some character's behaviors. The author took the time to build up this great love connection between Gabriel and Rowan and it just seemed like that was overlooked in this book. Maybe that was the intent, but the reasoning wasn't quite clear to me. Regardless, I still found the characters interesting and still absolutely appreciate the dialogue between Rowan and her inner self (who has no filter).

This is the final book in the series, and it delivers a satisfying conclusion! As a die hard Charlaine Harris / Sookie Stackhouse fan, I loved this series so much. Set in the sultry South Carolina Low Country, it reminded me a little of Bontemps, which I enjoyed. Since this is the last installment in A Vampire's Promise series, I highly recommend starting from the beginning and binge reading the entire series with a beverage of your choice in front of a warm fire since each story builds on the next. Although this story is about vampires, Ms. Smith comes at it from an interesting angle, but I don't want to give it away. Gabriel, the hero, is hot and swoon-worthy, while Rowan, is just the right amount of snark and wit. The cast of secondary characters are interesting and draw you in throughout all four of the books. The story is complex and fast-paced, and more than a little sexy. If you love paranormal romance, you'll love this!

Received an ARC for honest review

This is the second book in the series I read. Both as arcs. This time I was prepared for it not being a stand alone. I guess that means I was happier with this book. There was more character development also, again maybe because I vaguely recalled the other book.

Finally

I finally get to find out what happens to Rowan and Gabe. Well mostly what happens. The ending wasn't too bad.
