Rosemary Wells is an American writer and illustrator of children's books. She often uses animal characters to address real human issues. Some of her most well-known characters are Max & Ruby and Timothy from Timothy Goes To School (both were later adapted into Canadian-animated preschool television series, the former’s airing on Nickelodeon (part of the Nick Jr. block) and the latter’s as part of PBS Kids on PBS).

Our girls used to love the Max & Ruby stories by Rosemary Wells. We've seen enough of their videos that I can still imagine Ruby's voice in my head. Our girls are getting older, though, so when I saw this book, I decided to read it on my own.
The story is short and very much in line with other stories in this series. Max is trying so hard to scare Ruby, but nothing seems to work. The illustrations are very colorful and cartoonish and it appears that this story is based on an episode of the television show, although we've never seen it. I'm not even sure that Ms. Wells wrote this book, although I did not see any other authors listed. I liked the story and I think that it would be a great book to read with younger children for Halloween.
Our 4K kids aren't as familiar with Max & Ruby as kids were in the past - but they enjoyed the illustrations and trying to find Max. This isn't much of a story, but it can be a fun story to read as kids talk about what Halloween things they see. And they do like to yell BOO!!!
