So let me start off by saying the writing was good, and that the pacing and story pulled me in—I read it to the end. Which was the real problem. The book starts off interesting. It's Room, but with the whole family, grandmother and all. There's a lot of twists in the story that keep you reading, but then the book takes a weird turn, going from a 1st person perspective to a 3rd person multi POV in the middle of the book, and this part is also a flashback, and it happens right after a major bombshell is dropped, so it's pretty annoying. Through this flashback we find out that the reason the family is living in the basement is because the family's mentally handicapped son murdered a missing girl and raped her. The family covers it up, and moves into the basement.
So at this point it's pretty much established that the parents are the bad guys. They covered up a murder, they hold their 18 year old daughter captive in the basement with them, locking the door to the exit and wearing the key around their necks, and on top of that the daughter disgusts them so much they make her wear a mask so they don't have to look at her face. So these guys are real assholes, especially the dad. He's nothing but hateful to the daughter and the youngest son (none of the characters have names, by the way. They're all described the way I'm describing them. As dad, mom, sister, brother, and the boy), and you're rooting for these people to get what they deserve for covering up a murder and torturing their daughter for 11 years (also, she's raped by the handicapped son, and forced to give birth to the child). The book seems like it's going to give you that satisfaction, as it's the only ending that makes sense (the son escaping the basement, and the police taking the parents to jail), but instead the parents murder the daughter, and the youngest son becomes their caretaker, living above the basement, bringing them food and supplies as they need it. And this ending is supposed to be justified as the family just doing whatever it had to do to stay together. That's what the boy says in his narration that takes place 15 years after his sister was killed in the basement. The parents just wanted them to be a happy family. Awe, isn't that a lovely ending?

This was an intriguing story, about a family living in the basement of their former home. After reading the first two chapters, it was evident that this was going to be a dark tale, that took on an even darker tone when it changed to a third person perspective: which serves as the back-story of why they ended up living underground for so many years. It also explains how they were able to survive down there without ever leaving.
The first person narrative is told by the (boy) - they don't have names: just father, mother, grandma, sister, brother and nephew when he arrives; which was my first clue that something wasn't right. After taking certain factors out of the equation, I was left with two possibilities of how that could have happened. I ruled out the possibility of an immaculate conception. All of his family have burns (except him and the new arrival) - and his sister has to wear a white orthopedic mask due to her injuries. His grandmother is blind and smells of talcum powder.
The boy' spends some of his time reading insect books, and learns their Latin names, so he's quite intelligent. He also spends a good portion of his time getting into trouble, which he gets more proficient at - as time goes by. As he was born not long after his family went down into the basement; he has never seen the outside world, and he has an intense (curiosity?) yearning to vacate the only place he has ever known.
There's one thing he does learn, eventually: he can't trust everything his family have told him.
This is a story about: secrets, lies and self preservation. From the moment a door is opened, eleven years earlier, it can never be closed. I never guessed as to why they were in the basement, shut away from the world, but there's an emotional part (revelation) at the end of the first part of the first person narrative that I did see coming: mainly due to the fact that so much emphasis was put on something, that it had to be the opposite.
I may change my rating at a later date, after I've had time to think about it some more. When I first read the synopsis - I thought the story would be about something else. I was wrong. I'm not sure if anything was lost in translation, as its translated from another language. I'm guessing not.
In summation: an interesting story that goes to some dark places, that won't be to everyone's liking; mainly due to the subject matter.

I was going to give this book three stars because the author's writing was good enough to keep me reading until the end, but the more I thought about the story, the more I leaned towards reducing the stars. The reason? About halfway through the book, you begin to get the back story. At that point a very well written story that I thought was heading towards a touching and inspirational end as the editorial review would have you think, turned into something different. Once I knew the motivation of the characters,everything changed. The overarching message felt... wrong.
It is hard to go much deeper without giving away plot details, but this was a story about child abuse and ultimately ends with the message that sometimes a family has to do what they have to do, and things should be forgiven because they are your family. Abuse is excused because the abused "deserved it". The reader is meant to sympathize with the abusers, and I just couldn't. I doubt this was intentional. I believe the true purpose was to create a touching story about surviving as a family no matter how dark things can get. However, that is not how it read to me, and the ending left me quite upset. I finished the book feeling like there was only one redeemable character, and that character was not saved, despite the story's resolution implying it.

A door loses its meaning if you don't ever go through it. It becomes a wall.
The boy has spent ten years of his life in the basement. He was born there, and has only seen the outside world in picture books. His mother, father, older brother, and grandmother all have burn scars on their faces; his sister's scars are so bad, her face is hidden behind a mask. They all live together in the basement and try to maintain as normal a lifestyle as possible.
They are failing . . . miserably.
This one is pretty disturbing. At the halfway point, the author starts offering up the explanations to all the great mysteries, and it's . . . even more disturbing.
I'm saying no more because the less you know going into the story, the more you'll enjoy it, if "enjoy" is indeed the word. The book was a taut and suspenseful page-turner, anyway, though I suspect it will not be to everyone's taste. This may just be the sleeper hit of the summer.

Convoluted, implausible beyond belief, gossamer-thin characterisation; what do these people even look like? Not impressed.

A mask. Think of what it can cover, and what it cannot hide. Some very creepy family dynamics take front and center stage for this unsettling novel. The characters are never named, and it worked well here.
Hear the sound of the mother's nose oddly whistling as she stirs the carrot soup. Smell the talcum powder emanating from the grandmother. Consider the Cricket Man, a face that is inside out, and a little boy who loves his book about insects. A seventh plate of food is always set at mealtime for the one who is not there. Did I mention the whole family has been locked in a basement for 11 years?
This was a First Reads selection for the month of March.

Esta si que es una familia muy peculiar.
Una historia se ve diferente dependiendo del punto de vista de quien la cuenta. En el caso de esta historia, que sea contado desde la viviencia de un niño, a pesar de que tiene muchos pasajes secretos y con momentos de oscuridad, lo convierte en un libro espectacular.
Realmente, es muy dificil "adivinar" que fue lo que ocurrió o la razón por la cual ocurrió. Eso, hace que se convierta en una adicción leer esta historia rápidamente, porque la curiosidad de conocer el pasado y de entender la verdadera razón del porque están dentro de ese sotano es muy grande. Es inevitable no querer seguir leyendo. Mientras leía, me sorprendí mucho con cada dato inesperado y cuando paraba de leer, inconscientemente empezaba a hacer teorías para saber si adivinaba algo, pero la verdad no adivine nada y por eso quizás disfrute mucho más la historia.
Con el desarrollo del libro me queda una reflexión en el aire: ¿Qué serías capaz de hacer para proteger a tu familia?

4.5 estrellas.
No sé qué es lo que exactamente siento por este libro. Esta dividido en tres partes (+ un epílogo) y durante las dos primeras partes estuve muy ansiosa y no me terminaba de gustar la historia, eso sí, todo el tiempo me mantuvo muy interesada.
Luego llegamos a la tercera parte y todo se puso mucho más intenso. Se descubren cosas (algunas me las esperaba y otras no) y se terminan de atar todos los cabos. Los capítulos finales me fascinaron, me conmovieron muchísimo y ay, de sólo recordarlos se me estruja el corazón, ¡fue un final muy hermoso! El mejor que este libro pudo haber tenido. ¡Y el epílogo! Me sorprendió mucho ver que el autor nos había dejado un epílogo, era justo lo que yo necesitaba para poder darle un cierre a esta historia. Y qué bonito epílogo, hizo que todas esas cosas feas que este libro me hizo sentir se esfumaran.
En resumen, no sé si lo amé como suelo amar otros libros, pero sí que dejó huella en mí.

I wanted to like this one but unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations The Light Of The Fireflies by Paul pen was a bit like Room but way out there the premise starts out in the before then goes forward. There are no characters told by Mother, father, Sister, brother & grandmother . they live in the basement due to a fire which severely burned them all.
But from then on I just didn't get it even though they were safe inside rather than out the story was confusing & I kept wondering WHAT THE HELL!! I am just not sure if this was for me, as I loved Room & picked up the premise quickly but this was just plain weird.

No. This book is crap. It tries to be profound or shocking but one does not earn profundity just by throwing a lot of weighty topics (abuse, incest, living in a basement for ten years) at a "plot" and then doing the Gone Girl sort of twist where I'm supposed to be shocked that NOTHING IS WHAT YOU THOUGHT WOOO JAZZ HANDS DUN DUN DUNNN. Nope. The characters are not empathetic even once you're supposedly given all the stories, and a father is abusive, but out of love, see? and massive brutal crimes are never brought to justice but LOOK OVER HERE IMAGINARY TWINKLY FIREFLIES. No. I should have picked something else, anything else, for my free Kindle first read for March. I hated this book. Noooo.

Room on steroids. (Sorry, I never saw the movie, Room, but I did read the book. As an interesting aside, the original, pre-translation version of this came out only 2-3 years after Room. I'm curious to know if the author had read it before or after.) Basically, I think that's all that needs to be said. Nonetheless...
this is not for the faint of heart. The book is deeply disturbing. Without offering any spoilers, the book raises the bar on dysfunctional families, seen through the eyes of the young and naive, so if that kind of stuff causes you anxiety, I'd skip this one.
A minor quibble: I was reminded of Jeff VanderMeer's Annihilation, which, quite frankly, I did not enjoy as much as this, where the author dehumanized the protagonist and, indeed, all characters by denying them names. I dunno why, but I just don't find that an effective gambit.
Given my experience with Kindle First, this was a worthwhile pick (not just because the price was right). It's something different, it's creative and well done. And I hope it introduces the author to a wider US/English readership.
No spoiler, but I thought the author wrapped things up with a surprisingly appropriate, cogent, and satisfying conclusion. Some may find the ending rushed, but it worked just fine for me.

Lectura con el grupo 221 b Baker street
"Me sentí perdido en esa oscuridad que siempre había sido mi mundo. Ajeno a ella. Extraño en el sótano."
Una historia que es principalmente triste, llena de mentiras y fantasías, sueños de ser y de vivir pero limitado al mundo que te han creado, a espacios pequeños y situaciones repetitivas pero con la enorme ventaja de tener un narrador que, gracias a su fragilidad e inocencia, hace dinámicos los sucesos narrados y te mantiene a la expectativa de saber que va a pasar.
Algo a considerar es que hacen uso de un recurso que ya he visto varias veces en las historias que buscan sentirse claustrofóbicas: la falta de nombres, al tener tan pocos personajes, y estar todos relacionados entre sí, se les llama por el parentesco que tienen con el narrador, con ello el autor lo deja claro: aunque haya algo más, estas incapacitado para conocerlo.
Este es uno de los libros que el final lo condena, sin importar lo mucho que me gusto la primera mitad, que las revelaciones del porque llegaron al sótano se me hicieran muy interesantes (y detestables) y que en general la lectura fuera muy amena, el final me desencanto mucho: las razones son odiosas, egoístas , enfermizas y crueles, especialmente en lo referente a uno de los personajes pero no por ello le quito el mérito de que el autor logro transmitir la idea de que tan lejos estas dispuesto a llegar por proteger a tus seres queridos.
La historia se une a la lista de personajes jodidos, todos aquí están en mayor o menor medida locos, presas de sus propias decisiones e incapaces de rectificar el camino, y creo que ese es el punto que hace que me desagraden: el no tomar responsabilidad por sus propios errores sino que buscan culpar y castigar a otros, que prefieren doblar las cosas a su conveniencia para vivir con lo que han hecho, que construyen un mundo falso e idílico en vez de enfrentar la realidad y que torturan a los demás sobre aceptar su propia culpa. No digo que no haya amor en esa familia, sólo que es un amor tan perturbado que es difícil justificar sus acciones o decir que, en tus cinco sentidos, también habrías actuado así, hay un momento en que la abuela dice, y con toda razón, que esto es resultado de una serie de malas decisiones y esa frase resume perfectamente el libro de principio a fin.

Una historia que es principalmente triste, llena de mentiras y fantasías, sueños de ser y de vivir pero limitado al mundo que te han creado, a espacios pequeños y situaciones repetitivas pero con la enorme ventaja de tener un narrador que, gracias a su fragilidad e inocencia, hace dinámicos los sucesos narrados y te mantiene a la expectativa de saber que va a pasar.
Algo a considerar es que hacen uso de un recurso que ya he visto varias veces en las historias que buscan sentirse claustrofóbicas: la falta de nombres, al tener tan pocos personajes, y estar todos relacionados entre sí, se les llama por el parentesco que tienen con el narrador, con ello el autor lo deja claro: aunque haya algo más, estas incapacitado para conocerlo.
Este es uno de los libros que el final lo condena, sin importar lo mucho que me gusto la primera mitad, que las revelaciones del porque llegaron al sótano se me hicieran muy interesantes (y detestables) y que en general la lectura fuera muy amena, el final me desencanto mucho: las razones son odiosas, egoístas , enfermizas y crueles, especialmente en lo referente a uno de los personajes pero no por ello le quito el mérito de que el autor logro transmitir la idea de que tan lejos estas dispuesto a llegar por proteger a tus seres queridos.
La historia se une a la lista de personajes jodidos, todos aquí están en mayor o menor medida locos, presas de sus propias decisiones e incapaces de rectificar el camino, y creo que ese es el punto que hace que me desagraden: el no tomar responsabilidad por sus propios errores sino que buscan culpar y castigar a otros, que prefieren doblar las cosas a su conveniencia para vivir con lo que han hecho, que construyen un mundo falso e idílico en vez de enfrentar la realidad y que torturan a los demás sobre aceptar su propia culpa. No digo que no haya amor en esa familia, sólo que es un amor tan perturbado que es difícil justificar sus acciones o decir que, en tus cinco sentidos, también habrías actuado así, hay un momento en que la abuela dice, y con toda razón, que esto es resultado de una serie de malas decisiones y esa frase resume perfectamente el libro de principio a fin.

Un libro hermoso. Una historia sobre la familia, de cuánto es capaz por proteger a un ser querido. También trata de cómo la exclusión puede provocar en alguien reacciones impensables; que te harían cuestionar quién sos vos realmente. Es una trama triste y emocionante, de buscar superar la barrera a lo desconocido aunque eso amerite tomar riesgos, porque sin riesgos no hay cambios. Está lleno de mentiras y de misterios que se van a ir develando a lo largo de la historia. Un libro muy bien escrito, y, sin dudas, lo recomiendo.

Here it goes.
So there's this family living in a basement. In fact, the boy has lived his whole life there (10 years). He shares the space with his Mom, Dad, sister, brother, Grandma and now a new baby nephew. Just FYI, they are never named and are only ever referred to by their relation to the boy. The entire family (with the exception of himself and the new baby) have been disfigured by a fire and never leave the basement. Ever. The sister has been so horribly maimed that she is made to wear a prosthetic mask when in the presence of others. No exceptions. The brother has also been disfigured, but it is made pretty clear there are some other issues going on with him as well. Grandma is blind and Mom and Dad have suffered burns to their faces. The boy has always been told the horror of the world out there, where the very air causes blisters and the Cricket Man roams eating naughty children. He is safe in his home, nestled in the center of the world, with his family. Why would he want to be any place else?
The birth of the baby changes everything. Now the boy starts to wonder more about the outside world, he starts to wonder how this new baby came to be, with no one ever leaving the basement. It becomes apparent that his family is hiding something when his questions go unanswered. But the boy is clever, the boy has imagination, so the boy decides to take matters into his own hands and discover the secrets once and for all.
About halfway through the story there's a significant flashback period that relates the events leading up to the family's exile from society. And let me tell you, it's going to piss you off. I know it did me.
These parents. Gaaaaaahhhhh. That's all I'm saying.
So after all is revealed, after all the cards are laid out on the table, you are flashed forward again and the story concludes from there.
If you are a person who wants a true resolution, who wants to see the wrongs that were committed righted, well let's just say this book may not be for you. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautifully written story. You can tell there was a lot of love crafted into this one. It was ultimately a heartfelt story about the loss of innocence and about trying to put back the pieces back together after that illusion is shattered. And while there is no cliff hanger, per se, there is also no real sense of satisfaction either. I still felt agitated after the last word was read so that leaves me not sure how to rate this one. On writing alone it would be close to 5 stars. It just had that quality that I love to read, the kind that makes you feel like magic does exist if you only know where to look. Like anything is possible. Does that make sense? But the actions and justifications for those actions just pissed me off. I guess that leaves me split with a 3 star rating.
It's definitely worth the read, especially since it is available on KU and narration is also available, and it may not piss you off like it did me. That's the great thing about books. We all take away something different.

Conocí a este autor español con La casa entre los cactus y me enamoró su forma de escribir, además tuve la oportunidad de participar en un encuentro con él para comentar el libro y es un tío super majo.
Me habían recomendado por activa y por pasiva leer este libro y al fin llegó su oportunidad.
Me encantan los libros que están narrados desde la perspectiva de un niño y más si resultan creíbles y de verdad consiguen meterte en la mente, los miedos, las alegrías y las sensaciones de dicho niño. Pues bien, Paul lo consigue con creces.
Os presento una versión libre de la sinopsis de cosecha propia para intentar trasmitiros mis sensaciones (Recomiendo no leer la sinopsis original que para mí tiene spoilers):
Nos adentraremos en un peculiar hogar, un sótano con apenas una raya de luz solar en el que vive una familia: padres, abuela, hermana, hermano y yo que tengo 10 años. Algo pasó, hermana lleva una máscara, nunca le he visto la cara porque algo terrible esconde debajo. Los demás tienen marcas de quemaduras en diferentes sitios, pero yo no. Me gusta tocar las cicatrices de las manos de mamá, me gusta el olor a polvos de talco de la abuela cuando abraza y la crema de zanahoria. El hombre grillo me aterroriza, no quiero que me coja.
Me gustaría ver el sol, conocer cada uno de los insectos que aparecen en mi libro. Pero en casa todas las puertas están cerradas. ¿Por qué no podemos salir? ¿Qué peligros acechan? ¿Estará el hombre grillo esperando?
Es una historia tan fascinante como perturbadora. Es una palabra que leeréis en varias reseñas, pero es que es así. Ese sótano se te mete dentro poco a poco. No es una historia trepidante, pero acompañar a nuestro niño sin nombre en su día a día nos hará sentirnos más que meros espectadores. ¿Qué habrá llevado a la familia a estar ahí? ¿Por qué tienen quemaduras? ¿Quién es el hombre grillo? Son algunas de las preguntas que probablemente os irán surgiendo a medida que leéis.
Los personajes están increíblemente bien perfilados, sus claros y sus oscuros y es fácil empatizar con la mayoría, destacar a la hermana de la cual no os puedo contar nada, pero empaticé mucho con ella tras conocer su historia (con este personaje hubo muchas discrepancias en mi grupo de lectura). Que un autor consiga hacerte empatizar así me parece una proeza.
En definitiva, ya nunca volveré a ver con los mismos ojos una luciérnaga y sin duda entre mis lecturas del año que viene estarán varios libros de los que me faltan de Paul Pen.

I hate myself for reading this book to the end, because now I just want to fight air over how horrifyingly and in your face mysogynist this book is. I had very very big issues with this book. Holy SHIT the misogyny dripping from the pages as if it's totally okay. I like dark stories, but the TONE of this "the female character is ALL TO BLAME", can only come from a dude who does not care very much for women. I can't even think it's the translation to blame, no, the GIRL did this to the boy, forget that they were HER parents too, and she DESERVED their protection too. She needed their protection too, omg just no. I'm disgusted by this book, and not for the obvious reasons of incest. But thank goodness the other brother was SAVED from her evil ways, too! And she got what was coming to her. Omg NO.

Reto lector 2023 PopSugar Reading Challenge N° 29: Un libro recomendado por un amigo.
Esperaba una novela negra, pero es un drama, casi terror, muy perturbador.
Con un final medio poético, que sabes que se presenta de ese modo embellecido, porque así lo vivió su narrador de 10 años, pero que en realidad, de poético no tiene nada.
A pesar de que el epílogo está narrado por él ya adulto, es claro que el narrador del resto de la historia es un niño. Uno muy inocente incluso para su edad (entendible dado su extremo aislamiento), no un adulto que recuerda cómo era de niño.
Me ha tenido interesadísima y ha despertado en mí unas ganas (intensas) de seguir leyendo a este autor. Reto lector 2023 y Recapitulemos (Recapitulando)

Me sorprendió todo de este libro. Amé los giros, la oscuridad tan envolvente y las situaciones tan drásticas. No le pongo 5 estrellas, porque me faltó más un mensaje de vida al final.

¡Impresionante! Me lo leí en un periodo de tiempo cortísimo porque no podía parar de leerlo. Es una lectura sencilla que te mantiene atado a la historia y al menos en mi caso solo quería saber que explicación podían darle a todo lo que estaba pasando.
También me gustó que la perspectiva fuera exclusiva del niño y por su lenguaje no utilizaran nombres más allá de "Papá, mamá, abuela, abuelo, hermana y hermano ".
Lo que me detiene a darle cinco estrellas es el final. No me desagradó, ni fue un final malo...Pero que no termina de convencerme del todo.

Es un libro que me ha producido muchísimas sensaciones y sentimientos diferentes desde asco hasta ternura.....
No tenía ni idea de porque esta familia vive bajo tierra y el desarrollo de su vida en el sótano produce nauseas, claustrofobia, angustia y ganas de dejarlo.
La razón, la historia, el porqué y todo lo demás te descubre un novelón y yo que no soy de llorar, he estado con la lagrima asomando en el ojo todo el rato .
Lo recomiendo al 100%. Sin dudarlo !!! Es inimaginable lo que sucede de verdad

Estremecimiento podría ser la palabra que definiera mi estado ahora, a los pocos minutos de terminar esta novela. Ya había leído muchos elogios y me fiaba mucho de esas opiniones, pero no esperaba este puñetazo a la tripa. Quizás se deba a que yo esperaba una historia de terror convencional, con la presencia misteriosa de esa criatura que se nombra en la sinopsis y que es parte fundamental del desarrollo de la novela. Y me alegro mucho de haber estado tan alejado en mis previsiones.
La historia que narra el autor se cuece poco a poco. De hecho, me costó dos intentos la lectura de la novela porque no terminaba de engancharme como yo esperaba. Pero claro, tampoco aburre y quise ir un poco más allá, así que seguí y seguí hasta el momento en que Paul Pen decide mostrar sus primeras cartas.
Aún se mantiene en mi cabeza el primero de los impactos. De verdad, hay un antes y un después al momento en que lees una parte de la trama que definirá el resto de la historia. De ahí en adelante pues lo que buscamos en una historia de estas. Es decir, ya comeré después, ya estás agotado en el trabajo por las horas a las que te acuestas y ya estás como loco deseando que alguien lea esta novela para poder comentarla.

Empecé a leer este libro pensando que era un thriller, pero para mí ha sido más bien un libro de terror.
Me he encontrado con una historia muy perturbadora y que me ha dejado descolocada en muchas ocasiones, porque sólo podía pensar, hasta que punto estaban afectados los protagonistas del libro ...
Desde el inicio te vas a encontrar una familia que está encerrada en un sótano. Y ninguno tiene nombre: son el padre, la madre, la hermana... pero sin llamarse por ningún nombre determinado. El narrador de la historia va a ser muestro protagonista: un niño de 10 años.
Con este planteamiento empieza la historia y hasta práctica el final no se sabe qué es lo que está pasando. Además, durante todo el desarrollo suceden algunas cosas que te despistan, te hacen volar la cabeza, y que las teorías que yo tenías planteadas, se desbaraten.
Después de toda la fuerza que tiene la historia, el final se me ha quedado un pelín flojo, y por eso no puedo darle las 5 estrellas.
A pesar de esto, es un libro que recomiendo, porque me ha mantenido en tensión todo el tiempo y se lee muy rápido. Es perfecto para Halloween, por lo perturbadora que es la historia 😉

Es muy grato decir que pude tener en mi manos este maravilloso libro y decir que pasa a ser uno se los mejores que he leido en mucho tiempo o nunca se volvio uno de mis favoritos,le di 5 estrellas aunque merece mil mas...es absolutamente lindo inocente dulce y oscuro pero que al final te llena de amor y esperanza te dan ganas de tener tu propio tarro de luciernagas ...removio mis corazon y sentimientos a no mas poder,ame este libro y lo amare siempre !!!

El brillo de las luciérnagas es de esas historias que una vez terminadas te dejan un vacío en el estomago.
width="200" height="300" alt="description"/>Luego de leer "Un matrimonio perfecto", por supuesto que quería conocer mas de este autor español, con muchas reseñas positivas , me encontré El brillo de las luciérnagas, y como tal me deje llevar una vez mas con su estilo y prosa.
El protagonista , es un niño de 10 años creativo , imaginativo pero sobre todo curioso. Lleva una vida algo siniestra, ya que se encuentra encerrado junto a sus padre, hermana , hermano y abuelo, en lo que parece ser un sótano impenetrable. Su familia esta desfigurada debido a un incendio ocurrido muchos años antes de que él naciera, un incidente que parece ser un misterio.
}Los personajes no llevan nombre, todos son llamados dentro del libro con su apelativo familiar,así nos encontramos con un Padre muy estricto y mal humorado, una mamá cariñosa, una abuela comprensiva y dulce ,una hermana un poco rara y un hermano especial que padece de sus facultades mentales.
A través de los capítulos el autor nos va develando el porque de esa familia haya decidido inclaustrase del mundo , los saltos en los tiempos van enriqueciendo el panorama ,y nos permite ver como sucedió todo el gran misterio.
El libro esta escrito de una manera amena, sencilla y directa,sin dejar espacios vacíos,cada capitulo va bien amarrado y cada pagina va desmarañando la trama.
Paul Pen posee un estilo único,atrapando desde la primera página y manteniendo un ritmo sincronizado. Definitivamente este libro ha sido uno de los thrillers más originales que he leído en mucho tiempo.

Lo he devorado en poquísimo tiempo. Me ha absorbido hasta tal punto que he dejado de lado el ocio restante, y eso en un libro para mí es muy positivo. Pasa directamente a mis favoritos y seguiré de cerca al autor.

Cuanto tu mundo se reduce a un pequeño sótano un rayito de sol puede ser algo fascinante.
El protagonista de esta historia lleva sus diez años de vida encerrado en el sótano de su casa, nunca ha pisado el exterior y cada vez tiene menos esperanzas de hacerlo.
Desde que sucedió el incendio que desfiguró los rostros de los miembros de la familia viven encerrados sin ver la luz del sol pero... ¿Qué sucedió? ¿Tan peligroso es el mundo real?
El pequeño cada vez tiene más necesidad de salir de allí y sus padres ya sabían que pronto llegaría este momento...
El brillo de las luciérnagas es una historia distinta y original, cargada de momentos que te harán sentir más de un escalofrío.
Una historia que no destaca por tener una gran variedad de personajes, su objetivo es mostrar la unidad familiar y la importancia del bien común por lo que no conocerás en ningún momento sus nombres, no son necesarios.
Personalmente, no es una novela que me haya enganchado desde las primeras páginas, hasta la mitad del libro no he tenido necesidad de seguir leyendo aunque considero acertado el ritmo lento que tiene en la primera mitad, te adentra en el mundo tenebroso en el que vive la familia.
Mi parte favorita de la historia ha sido el pasado tan turbio de la familia y lo que menos me ha gustado ha sido el final, no me lo esperaba, me habría gustado que terminase de otra manera.
He de decir que con esta novela tenía las expectativas muy altas y aunque he pasado un buen rato leyéndolo no lo he disfrutado tanto como esperaba. Aún así, la narración me ha encantado y continuaré leyendo obras de este autor.

Es adictivo, tan adictivo que me lo terminé en dos días y eso es raro en mí. Esperé mucho de este libro y al final no me gustó mucho. Sí, fue agradable la lectura pero odié muchas razones de lo que pasó.

Primero que nada, no entiendo porqué los padres odiaban tanto a la hermana. No fue su culpa lo que pasó con su hermano. No fue culpa de nadie que luego del incidente él fuera un loco sexual. Es una aberración que ella tuviese "toda" la culpa. Ella lo descuidó, sus padres la odiaban, el hermano la violó y todos como si nada. O sea, ¡¿qué?! Luego la hermana muere y ya. ¿Qué es esto? ¿Y la justicia para esa loca familia? Aunque ese niño estuviese loco eso no le daba el derecho de abusar de alguien.
Al final, los demás se quedaron abajo en el sótano y el niño vivió afuera con el sobrino, se casó y todo lo demás. ¿Y la niña desaparecida muerta? ¿Y la justicia para la horrible vida de la hermana? ¿Y dónde demonios quedó el amor paternal de los padres? Es un libro estúpido, ¡totalmente! ¿Acaso alguien siente pena por la hermana? Yo sí.
Esperé tanto que el final me decepcionó. No entiendo porqué le dan tantas estrellas. Un libro soso y tonto. Concluyendo con un estúpido final "feliz" y uno triste para la persona que menos tenía la culpa y solo por un estúpido error.
