The Twilight Before Christmas

Rate this book
Seven sisters...and a legacy of magical secrets.
Bestselling novelist Kate Drake is one of seven sisters gifted with amazing powers of witchcraft. Returning home in time for her northern California town's annual Christmas pageant, Kate catches the spirit of the season and decides to open a bookstore in a charming but run-down historic mill. Decorated former U.S. Army Ranger Matt Granite, now a local contractor, doesn't mind working in the undeniably eerie house—not if it means getting closer to Kate. There's something about the quiet, sensual woman that powerfully attracts him.

When an earthquake cracks the mill's foundation and reveals a burial crypt, Kate senses that a centuries-old evil has been unleashed—and that it's coming after her. Though Matt vows to guard her from dusk till dawn, Kate knows she will have to summon all of her and her sisters' powers to battle the darkness threatening to destroy both Christmas and the gift of soul-searing passion her hometown hero wants her to keep forever....

"The Twilight Before Christmas" is a supernatural, engaging and sensual continuation of this series. The hero,a retired ranger Matthew Granite has pined for Kate Drake as long as he can remember. But now in the mids of the all-consuming passion between them, they will unknowingly release an old raging evil that throws nightmares on every one in Sea Haven.
It will take all the seven sisters to save this Christmas!

Damn it,this series is getting better and i have only just started!I knew this would happen!Christine Feehan`s faultless stroke and language made me absorbed into the world of Sea Haven and its treasures-which are the Drake Sisters.

Kate Drake is a best-selling author, and i just adored her vivid imaginations.Despite her perfect and elegant beauty she had such a nice vulnerability that made me want to hug her along with her sisters. She has the gift of giving peace to people, and had all along stolen the heart of her beloved without knowing it.
Matthew "Matt" Granite is everything but granite the moment he is with Kate.Ahhh how crazy he is about her,and i just loved the neanderthal side of him that wanted to take her away! This big muscle ripped man was such marshmallow when it came to Kate!!!He is one of the most vulnerable and sexy hero i have met, just love that he got so mezmerized by Kate that he had crashed his car THREE times!I love Matt and Kate together, they are connected through body and soul, and i wish them a happy future with all my soul.Don`t get me started on the sex-scenes...cuz...ooohh they made me tingle all over!Yeah..Christine knows her genre well..!!!

And i got to meet Jackson!!!He was briefly mentioned in the other book, and i long for his book with the youngest of the sisters Elle Drake in "Hidden Currents".They had much connection going on in this book!Jonas and Hannah still fight every time they are together, and its clear how bad Jonas has it for her in this book!I am also happy that all seven sisters finally reunites in this book, cuz they are badasses,i am damn well excited for the next book now.

Finally I have gotten to read Kate Drake's story. So that leaves me one more Drake sister book to complete (Dangerous Tides--Libby's story). All in all, I found The Twilight Before Christmas to be a great story. I can't give it 5 stars, because it did drag a little in some parts. It's probably a 4.25 star story. I read this story out of The Wicked and the Wondrous duology.
What I liked about it:
*Matt's adoration for Kate was very endearing. It was funny how he felt like he made a fool out of himself in front of her, and how she made this very physically-accomplished guy act clumsy and wreck three cars. I like that although he became enamored of her when she was fifteen and he was college age (I'm going to assume he was maybe 19 or 20), he didn't act on it, but left to her grow up. Plus he joined the military and Special Forces. Some might argue that this was just an infatuation, but the fact that he had these feelings for so many years suggests that this is not the case. When this book rolls around, Matt is in full hero-in-pursuit mode, although gentle and wooing about. Matt was a very nice guy.
*The humor in this story was great (which I alluded to above). Poor Kate thought that Matt's brothers were laughing at her, because she always felt clumsy and inadequate around Matt in their interactions. They were really laughing at their brother, and how stone cold cupid-struck he was for Kate. This story had lots of other family interactions that made me laugh. Christine Feehan really is a funny lady, for all the angst and darkness in her stories.
*Family and friends--always a good thing for this reader, although sometimes I get a little bored with some of the descriptions of various denizens of Sea Harbor. I like the Drake books best when they focus on the family and immediate friend interactions than talking about such and such and who did what around town. I felt a little cheated because we didn't really see too much Damon in this story. He's a cool character for me. What can I say? I love nerdy guys. And Damon, well, he's brilliant. Smart is sexy. So: I.Wanted.More.Damon! Loved seeing all the Drake sisters. What a cool bunch of women. Since I read Hidden Currents just before this book, it was nice to see the beginnings of the bond between Jackson and Elle. Sadly, no Ilya or Alexsandr :( I love me some Jonas, and he's in this one a lot. You can tell he has it bad for Hannah.
*Very cool gothic, scary, creepy angle. The ghostly villain, shall we say, reminded me of the creepy Old Man from Poltergeist II. It goes without saying that it was a bit scary in moments since I refuse to watch that movie since I saw it the first time. The backstory behind the haunting was very interesting, and Ms. Feehan utilized it very well to tell us a little about the history of Sea Harbor and a bit about the Drake ancestors who settled in this seaside town. The scary parts probably dragged out a little too long for me, but overall, I enjoyed it.
*Kate and Matt--Although I could see where Kate was coming from with her fears that she was a mis-match for Matt, the man was clearly in love with her and adored her. Say yes already! I doubt the man was going to change his mind after being in love with her for what I estimate is over ten years. So that part was a bit frustrating for me. Great love scenes (as usual).

All in all, a nice story, and just right for this time of year. I liked the message about religious tolerance and the fact that we can all be united in some way, even if we don't share the same beliefs.

I know I'm dreadfully previous here, but I just finished Christine Feehan's The Twilight Before Christmas - book 2 in her enchanting Drake Sisters series. As you've probably already realized, I am a huge Feehan fan. I have read her entire Dark Carpathian series, and now am captivated by the Drake series.

The Twilight Before Christmas is the story of Kate Drake, the second eldest of the seven magical Drake sisters. Kate, an award winning novelist, has returned home to the ancestral Drake family home in Sea Haven just in time for the town's annual Christmas pageant. She's ready to settle down, and has bought an run-down mill, in hopes of renovating it into a combination bookstore and cafe.

Former Army Ranger Matt Granite (love the name btw!) has also returned home to Sea Haven, to work in his family's construction business. When he learns of the possibility of working close to Kate in renovating her mill, Matt jumps at the chance to spend time with the woman he's been in love with for years.

When an earthquake cracks the foundation of the mill revealing a burial crypt, a centuries-old evil is released - a force so malevolent and powerful that it will take the combined talents of all seven Drake sisters to defeat it.

The Twilight Before Christmas was truly delightful! I loved the characters of Kate and Matt and how they related to each other - they fit together so perfectly. The storyline was suspenseful, and the history of Christmas in Sea Haven and the elements of the supernatural weaved intricately together to build a beautiful story of love and forgiveness. The action throughout the book is well-developed and leaves the reader hanging on every page in anticipation of what's coming next. The fog that rolled in to Sea Haven masking a sinister and vindictive force was just plain eerie. Feehan's writing makes it possible for the reader to "feel" the tendrils of the fog wrapping around them.

I recommend The Twilight Before Christmas for anyone who enjoys well-written paranormal romance/suspense. I had a creepy-good time reading it, and I can't wait to pick up the next book in the series, Oceans of Fire.

A little heavy on the sex, which gets old after a while. The dialogue between the two main characters was downright silly and unrealistic. What man talks like that? Really dated. What will keep me continuing with the series is the relationships among the seven sisters and the interesting paranormal aspects.

Me encantó. ❤️

Lo recomiendo.

2.5 stars

This one felt a bit sillier than the first in the series. I have a high tolerance for silliness, but I had to roll my eyes a little with a few things—the big deal fancy careers all the sisters have, the weird reservations Kate has about getting involved with Matthew, the repetitiveness of the fog attacks. And I’m used to a certain amount of orgasmic hyperbole in these things—people exploding and floating into the stars and whatnot—but one description in particular just was so explicit and weird, I clutched my pearls and said, “Don’t say it that way, Christine Feehan!”
I think too I didn’t warm to Kate and Matthew like I did to Sarah and Damon in the first of the series. Kate came off like a damsel in distress more than I like in my lady characters, but I recognize that was probably intentional, given why she thinks she and Matthew aren’t compatible.
I’m still curious about this series, and I do like the small town setting, the closeness of the sisters, their friendship with the sheriff, the friendships among the male characters, and of course the supernatural aspects of the plots. I also liked the interview with the author at the end. She seems like such a good egg, I don’t want to judge the series too harshly by one book or rate this one lower than a three. That’s my inscrutable code and rating system, and the secret to my success.
So, let’s see how the next one goes! Who will fall in love next‽

This was a re-read. I do believe I enjoyed it much more a decade ago than now. I needed them to stop with the sex and focus on the malevolent spirit tormenting the sisters. The premise was wonderful gothic-y goodness, but the story needed — more? Also, Sheriff Jonas needs to be turned into a toad ASAP.

3.75 or 4.0 stars . Enjoyable, sexy, and somewhat suspenseful. This is the second Freehan book I have read from the Drake Sisters series, set in Sea Haven, California. I was so intrigued by the premise, setting, and characters, and this series gets rave reviews, but I find these books only pleasant -- except for Safe Harbor with Jonah and Hannah. That book was truly tense and suspenseful and moving -- much more than pleasant!

The Twilight Before Christmas is a fun read. I enjoyed it. However, I felt little psychological tension for what might have been a scary suspense-filled romance. Even when I supposedly should have felt fear, I didn't. Why not?

Hmmm...partly because it's a romance, where all's well that ends well. The HEA is a given. But also because the seven Drake sisters--witches all--are all so good, so united, so fair, so wise. We have a best selling novelist, a blockbuster singer, an award winning physicist, a world famous doctor, etc. Players all! Super-achievers with superpowers. So, how could tension develop, even when a creepy grudge from the grave comes calling?

Then, the heroes --Matt, Jonas, and Jackson-- all attended Stanford, MIT or Columbia, eventually becoming Army Rangers. Good and strong and noble. Sexy, too.

Don't get me wrong --- I actually LIKED all these beautiful people. But I didn't LOVE anyone. My heart didn't go out to anyone. How can I watch their character develop when they are all already THERE, winners one and all?

So maybe I'm just jealous and cranky? A distinct possibility.

The writing itself seemed a bit schoolgirlish at times and often repetitive -- several scenes with cookies and tea and over-exhausted witches.. How many times do we need to be told that Elle is on her way home (!!) and that their parents are still soooo in love, off canoodling in Venice?

The dialogue seemed disconnected some of the time. One character would say something, but then the response didn't really connect, as far as I could tell. Sometimes.

Nonetheless, a fine holiday read! If you want a slightly suspenseful bit of brain candy with several sexy scenes --Matt is a hot one-- this will fit the bill nicely. :-)

This book was not my bowl of rice but for others it may be the perfect sticky rice.

The story line seemed to drag and repeat itself in conversations among the sisters. I kept making sure I was turning the page. And, the sensual tension between Kate and Matt was really wearing thin rather quickly. But, the tension finally ended, and the bosom heaving and horizontal hijinks started. Always with a dash of malevolence thrown in for good measure.

Sorry folks, I wanted to like it. Different strokes for different folks.

Ding! 🤦

My intention to read at least couple of books for the Christmas season, and what do you expect when you go ahead and choose one blindly😺?

A Twilight before Christmas is book # 2 in The Drake sisters series and like always with me, never realized that. Anyway, I don't think I missed much, as the series has the story of each sister and their powers.

The sisters all 7 of them are planning to gather together in Sea haven for Christmas. Kate a renowned writer is intending to settle back in Sea Haven and buys an old mill which unleashes a evil presence into the village after an earthquake. With Mathew, Jackson and Jonas supporting the sisters who has varying powers in witchcraft, they manage to save the Christmas festivities and their village from mayhem.

Christine Feehan has written a Christmas story with a twist which was not what I expected, well that's OK coz it is my fault but for a reader who loves the genre of Paranormal romance, this is one delicious book with a drool worthy hero and his love for Kate and even the love between the sisters was delightful

I actually read this story in The Wicked and the Wondrous which contained two stories by Christine Feehan. This is the story of the 2nd Drake sister, Kate. As with all the Drake sisters, she has a supernatural power, although hers seems the least noticeable. She can bring peace to those around her.

Kate has had a crush on Matt Granite since she was a child. He’s always been crazy about her. But they never were honest about their feelings. Matt is back from his service as an Army Ranger and he finally makes a move on Kate, just as an evil entity makes its way into Sea Haven.

The spirit seems bent on destroying Christmas and those who would celebrate it. Kate must use her gift and band together with her sisters to defeat the evil.

And still find time to get it on with Matt.

SPOILER: She manages to do both. (Go Kate!) 4 stars.

A solid three stars.

From the get go, I was intrigued with the Drake sisters. This is the second installment of the series focusing on Kate and Matthew.

I’m not a huge fan of insta-love, and this hits you right in the face with it. Hard. Which left me on edge and rolling my eyes. I like watching relationships develop. The ones you have to work for are the most rewarding.

I found the mystery to be quite strong, and Feehan does an excellent job building the suspense. The resolution was a little anticlimactic for me and I wish it would have gone in a slightly different direction.

Although this story was about Kate, I am still completely intrigued by both Hannah and Elle. I am very excited to hear their stories. Hannah has had a particular mystery since the first book, and I would love answers!

Happy reading!

Struggling to believe a woman could write such blatantly chauvinistic characters in the 2000s AND that people like it. One character refers to a woman as baby doll and Barbie doll throughout and at the end proclaims, "Women bake cookies. That's what they do. They sit around the house looking pretty and hand their man a plate of cookies and a drink when he comes home." He truly made my skin crawl. The main male character made me claustrophobic with how often he needed to hold his fragile and delicate woman to keep her safe. So when it came to the sex scenes, I had zero interest. I may even have tried shrugging him off me as I read. But hey, points for a restless spirit pummeling people with Christmas wreaths.

Great Book but Beware

First, I love this series and I already read the whole series in paperback. That is why the book got a 5 rating. This ebook was advertised as new, never in print. Not true. It really ticks me off when I buy the same book in multiple formats, or even multiple times in the same format. I just looked on my shelves and noticed I have two print copies of a different Christine Feehan book. She is popular enough that she does not need to get her fans to buy extra copies of her book just because of whatever reason there is, such as a new publisher, a new cover, or just a reissue of an older book. Not nice.

Not as short as the first book “Magic in the Wind”, but not as long as the rest of the sisters books.

Kate is the next oldest sister, she’s an award winning author, and she’s home to stay. She wants to continue to write, but also run a bookstore/coffeehouse. The ideal place is the “old mill” it’s very rundown, and Kate knows she won’t be able to do the work on her own.
She’s travelled the world and now she’s ready to settle down, and where better than Sea Haven.
But although she’s a best seller, she’s shy and not at all like her characters.

Matt is an Army Ranger “retired” he now owns with family a construction firm. He’s always been a bit of a ladies man, but he’s really only ever had eyes for Kate, she’s always been too young for him, but now she’s back in Sea Haven, he’s going to persuade her that they belong together.

So Kate and Matt begin to plan out the renovations, each liking the other, but not wanting to put themselves in a vulnerable position.

There is something amiss in Sea Haven, an evil entity has targeted Kate and those who interact with her. Kate needs all her wits about her. Her sympathy for this spirit could get her into trouble, but with Matt and her sisters on Kate’s side, she hopes to lay the spirt to rest before it can seriously hurt someone.

The author is setting the scene for the other sisters, the interaction between the sisters is funny, it’s also very touching In places. The author is so descriptive in her telling of the surrounding places, I can picture then so clearly.

So will Matt get his Drake sister? Will Kate be able to calm the spirit enough for it to leave Sea Haven? And who’s next for the aisle?

Second in the Drake Sisters (Sea Haven and/or Christmas as well) paranormal romance series and revolving around seven sisters with magical talents. Based on the Mendocino coast, the couple focus is on Kate Drake and Matt Granite.

My Take
As usual, Feehan easily pulled me into her cozy story. I just love how supportive the sisters are of each other and of others. It's a gift that's returned by the people of Sea Haven.

Feehan uses a third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Kate's and Matt's perspectives, giving us insight into what they're thinking, feeling, and seeing. It's sometimes fun and sometimes annoying, as they have no idea that they are deeply attracted to each other.

It's pretty impressive that Matt not only went to Stanford University but was also a US Army Ranger who now works in his family's contracting business. Busy boy. Wonder what he studied? Yep, that's sarcasm...gotta wonder why such a talented young man is content with being in a "sleepy" town. Feehan could work on his reasons a bit more.

Hmm, the sisters seem to have a very "deep" connection, as Kate's sisters remind her not to get too heavy with Matt, lol.

Oh, oh. It's that generational issue of the kids not listening to their parents and finding out the hard way that they should've. Tsk, tsk... 'Cause I've never had that problem...right.

There are connections in Twilight Before Christmas. Between the sisters. The Drakes protecting the people of and in Sea Haven. Sea Havenites watching out for each other and for the Drakes. The underlying connection in the story with the Christmas pageant. That past connection with, well, the past. It does give us some backstory on the founding of Sea Haven. Religion certainly has a lot to answer for.

There's a good bit of action, yet there's more of an emphasis on taking us deeper into the sisters' relationship with each other, their weaknesses, and their own concerns about their gifts. As well as that earlier mention about the push-pull between Kate and Matt.

Matt does have a lot to learn about the Drakes...

The Story
Tired of wandering, Kate has decided to stay home. She's buying the old mill and renovating it into a bookstore and coffeehouse. Only, an earthquake breaks open an unexpected bit of nasty.

The Characters
The flawless Kate Drake, the second of seven sisters, each gifted with a psychic and magical talent, adores books and living in her imagination. Which makes it perfect that she's a famous author who makes anyone feel peace even if she does suffer from panic attacks. The shy Hannah is a supermodel with a gift for wind, air, and sea. Abigail's bane is her ability to pull truth from anyone. Her gift lies with water. Sarah is the oldest sister and works as a security consultant. She's engaged to Damon Wilder, a brilliant, retired, scientist ( Magic in the Wind , 1). Joely's gift is her voice, able to compel others, and a world famous singer. Libby has healing gifts which she uses working for the CDC in third world countries. Elle, the youngest sister with all of their gifts and destined to have seven daughters to carry on the family mantle, is a brilliant physicist. Their parents are roaming the world. The Drake house is amazing, especially with that interactive entryway mosaic floor made by the Drakes' grandmother and her six sisters.

Matthew Granite, a former Army Ranger who attended Stanford, is a contractor, good with the ladies...except for Kate. Danny Granite, his brother, is dating Trudy Garret, a waitress at the Salt Bar and Grill with a four-year-old son, Davy. Victoria and Harold Granite are their parents.

Sea Haven, California, is...
...a small town, a village practically, on the Mendocino coast. Jonas Harrington, another former Ranger, is the local sheriff who grew up with the Drake sisters. Jackson Deveau, a skilled sniper in the Rangers, is one of Jonas' deputies. Inez Nelson owns the local grocery store. The Ruttermyer boy, the one with Down Syndrome, is a great example of how the people step up for others.

Old Man Mars owns the fruit stand and hates, I mean "hates", Christmas. Bruce Harper is having an affair with Sylvia, whose husband, Mason Fredrickson, is not thrilled. The pregnant Letty Harper is not happy either. Janice Carlton needed extra help one night. Gina works at the preschool where Haley and Davy Granite are some of her students. The Cover and Title
The cover is a fantastical collage in deep blues with a splash of red, orange, and yellow. A stormy sky is the top half of the cover with an info blurb in white at the very top and the author's name in a white-outlined red gothic font immediately below it. The bottom half of the cover sees a full moon peeking from beneath the clouds and lightning onto a dark sky that melds into the hills on which the tower of the Drake house stands on the right. Lower, and to the right, is a brightly lit Christmas tree. On the left is the title in a dark-shadowed white in the same font. Between author and title is a testimonial in black with a cloud as background.

The title is the doom that was released, a Twilight Before Christmas.

The perfect Christmas present

Not your typical Christmas story, but I loved it nonetheless. I enjoyed seeing more of these sisters and their special brand of magic. The love they have for each other and the men in their lives only add to the richness of the story. The author has such an amazing talent for adding just that touch of reality to her stories making them jump off the pages and play out in my mind. I love how she delved into a darker side of the holiday, and yet the spirit of these ladies and the strength of their bond brought them to a HEA that I can’t wait to read again. This book was the perfect nightmare before Christmas and I can’t wait to see which sister finds her perfect mate next.

"Una historia que empieza dando a entender que combinará bien el romance y el misterio, pero luego decae y muestra a unos personajes que son repetitivos a nivel de pensamiento y de conversación. Además, la trama se centra en un solo aspecto y desaprovecha todos lo demás. No es un libro totalmente malo, pero tampoco es que tuviera muchas cosas que me agradaran".

This paranormal romance is well written and has some very steamy sex scenes. However, I found it easy to put down and read something else, so it's taken me a few days to get through. I just wasn't that into the witch storyline. Also it suffered from being a bit rushed re character development at the beginning.
