The Royces - a special family, a privileged clan living in a closely guarded enclave, a paradise of wealth and tradition no stranger could penetrate. They thought themselves safe...until Nancy Royce Horton dies in a manner so brutal that only a fool - or a liar - could call it an accident. They thought themselves secure...until someone - or something - began stalking their woods, defiling their homes and intimate places, leaving obscene marks of passage... An alien fear gripped Roycewood. Who - or what - was out there in the blanketing night, watching...waiting? What manner of outsider menaced their private world, hungered for their blood? Or - worse still - what manner of horror had been bred within their gates?
Meet the extended Royce family. They are filthy rich and most of them live on a several thousand acre estate just a few miles from Philly that dates back to a land grant from William Penn himself in the 17th century. Behind the massive 12 foot walls that encircle the estate are several 'cottages', the manor house and dozens of outbuildings associated with a working farm/stud farm. Dr. Ben Royce heads up the Royce clas; their patriarch and also either their uncle or grandfather. Living in the cottages are several of the Royce offspring and their spouses and kids.
The Spawn starts off with a prologue where one of the Royce offspring, after an argument with her cad of a husband, goes for a walk and gets pushed off a cliff by some slobbering, naked things; before she dies, the feral things sexually abuse her and drink her blood. When the body is found the next day, Uncle Ben uses his power and influence to maintain that it was an accident. Nonetheless, strange, disturbing things start happening around the estate, like one of the grandkids getting locked in a cellar, drunk, with a rose stuck in her ass (she is four years old).
This could have really rocked, but Key dragged this out, making is something like the lifestyles of the rich and famous, with exquisite detail on the various character's sex lives. About halfway through, I started rooting for the things! The foo is tepid, the characters quickly got very old and were really hard to care about one way or another. Key did manage a pretty good denouement, but you really have to work to get to it. 2.5 feral stars!
I’d say 90% of this was about following the characters (the rich Royce family) and their very taboo sex lives, along with a very taboo reveal at the end. This really needed to be trimmed down, especially since there’s not much focus on the actual plot. Definitely had a “taboo for the sake of being taboo” kinda vibe. I wish the characters were more likable since that’s the main focus, but they’re not.
