“The Real Life of Sebastian Knight” by Vladimir Nabokov was first published in 1941. It was the author’s first English novel. Before this novel, his all other works had been published in Russian language. The writing of the novel had taken place between late 1938 and early 1939.
The idea of this huge English novel occurred to Nabokov in Paris while he was sitting in his bathroom, with his valise set across a bidet as a writing desk. To write the novel he retreated into the washroom.
