Originally intended as a companion piece for the short-lived, but much lamented, PBS series, Woodcarving with Rick Butz still holds its own as a standalone course for beginning woodcarvers. The 14 projects offer a nice introduction to the various carving styles, from whittling, to relief carving, to carving in the round.

The step-by-step black-and-white photographs are clear and well presented, and the instructions are logical and easy to understand. With a little time and patience, and a handful of the most basic tools, even the most novice carver can create some very beautiful and satisfying results.

The finished projects are shown in the full-color center section, and include a cardinal, merganser, Swedish folk horse, quilt rack, and a driftwood troll. Using this enjoyable book, they are, indeed, a very attainable goal.

Never take your mind off your workpiece. Keep your tools sharp, and your fingers on your hands.
