Recommends it for: Readers Looking for Charming New Christmas Stories for the Picture-Book Set
Four woodland friends, on the lookout for Santa's sleigh one Christmas Eve, witness a present tumbling from that magical equipage and set out to deliver it themselves in this sweet holiday picture-book. Exuberant Rabbit, grumpy Squirrel, eager Bird and worried Deer all band together to step in for Santa, determined to get the gift to its intended recipient, the new baby at the nearby farm. Despite cold and weariness, the friends persevere, and are rewarded by the baby's smile, and a little somet ...more

Four animals are in the forest waiting for Santa to fly over, when a present falls out of his sleigh. They see the on the tag that it's for the new baby and set out to deliver it. Although they think the gift is silly, they make an interesting discover--sometimes the joy of others is the best thing.

I love how each animal has an unmistakable personality. One is grumpy and negative, while others are hopeful and positive. The illustrations are charming and engaging, really adding a spar

A beautifully illustrated tale of four woodland characters giving Santa a big assist on Christmas Eve.

The dialogue between bird, deer, bunny and squirrel has a timely message of good deeds, friendship, and perseverance. Each character is unique with their own personality. From the cantankerous squirrel, to the intuitive bird, the optimistic bunny, and the tentative deer.

Targeted at ages 4 – 8, but that would mean learning to read the book themselves. The story itself woul

Santa accidentally loses a gift over the edge of his sleigh one Christmas Eve. A group of kind-hearted animals decides to take the gift to its recipient. They struggle through the cold, snowy night in order to get the gift to a baby girl.

This sweet picture book has many positive messages to it. First, we learn that some people (and squirrels) will be grumpy no matter what, but it's important to love them anyway. We also learn about selfless sacrifice as the animals build a sleigh and

Me: "OMG, Squirrel, shut UP! Stop being a grinch!"

Me at the end: ".....was this....a test? Was Santa testing them to see what they'd do???

Discomfort at the idea of Santa giving secret tests of character aside, the story was pretty cute. The four intrepid friends did a good deed, even though it was hard, and it paid off for them (both in warm fuzzies and material reward!).
Cute illustrations, too!

Stephanie Graegin's illustrations are poignant and stunning in this delightful tale of four woodland friends who help Santa deliver a dropped present. I was charmed by all of these characters, but especially the grouchy squirrel.

Hello, friends! Our holiday countdown week continues with The Lost Gift: A Christmas Story by Kallie George and Stephanie Graegin, a wonderfully cute tale of selfless kindness.

My Review: This is a cute little book I picked up at Kohl's and it came with a little stuffed deer. A sweet story about the animals helping deliver a gift that fell off Santa's sleigh. I love how there is a grumpy and somewhat selfish animal that is a little more symbolic of real life. The message is also a good one about the gift just needing to bring joy, not needing to be anything spectacular. It is a short book, with beautiful illustrations in a more soothing color palette, perfect for bedtime.

Sometimes it’s hard to let go of what we want and do the right thing instead. When Santa drops a gift out of his sleigh on accident, these little furry friends help return it to the little baby who would have been missed. Squirrel grumbles along, but eventually all the friends are swept up in the spirit of giving and forget about themselves. This is just the kind of message I want my kids to read.

Four animal friends with distinctly different personalities watch in awe as Santa passes overhead in his sleigh. But to their surprise, wind causes one present to fall out of the sleigh. The four friends--Rabbit, Squirrel, Deer and Bird wait for Santa to return for it, but when he doesn't, they find it and decide to take it to its intended recipient, a baby at a nearby farm. Although Squirrel isn't really on board with the idea, Bird suggests that they build their own sleigh and act as surrogate ...more

When a gift falls out of Santa's sleigh, the animals of the forest take it upon themselves to deliver it to the new baby that it's meant for. This book is a tale of ingenuity, teamwork, and perseverance. It's about believing in yourself and trying to accomplish a task. But it's also about the adorable illustrations and the animals saving the day for Christmas. Santa even has a little reward for them in the end.

This was incredibly adorable! The writing and illustrations were fantastic. The animals had a variety of expressions and personalities. I could see this being one of those books I would re-read over an over as a kid. Highly recommend as a new holiday tradition for young children and families. It's a great book to read aloud to children :)
