Michael Ploog's adaptation of the book by Wizard of Oz creator L. Frank Baum. This beautiful hardcover graphic novel presents the magical adventures of Santa Claus, from his birth to the present.
This story is magical, beautiful and never fails to bring me in the right kind of Christmas mood, ever single year. And I don't mean the Last-Christmas-I-Gave-You-My-Heart-kinda mood, but the Snow-Stew-Pine trees-Reindeers-Straw-In-Your-Hair-And-Stars-In-Your-Ears-kinda mood. This comic just breaths warmth, coziness and comfort. All shades of red and gold just ooze off the pages, children's cheeks glow like red apples and Santa himself has the most amazing beard I have ever seen!
This is the story of Santa himself. This is the story of what he does, how he does it and how (from the moment he was born) magical forest creatures have been helping him in all ways possible. It can get a little scary at times, Santa has to chop a tail off to make a point, but I'd read this to my young niblings without any hesitation.

Come Claus
This is such a delightful book, answering any of the many questions the imaginative child who has a magical imagination, can ask about Santa Claus. It is beautifully written, so sweet. (Caveat - there are several unsavory, rascist sentences that need to be edited out, I 'm afraid. ) For that reason alone, I rated it at 4 stars, rather than 5.
normally i don’t like graphic novels but this is an exception. the illustrations are gorgeous and the pacing (which is usually the problem i have with graphic novels) is really good.
An extraordinary comic. I've never read the original, but the story is quite excellent. It's an indepth retelling of the mystical origins of Santa Claus. Probably the best single Santa story I've ever read.
But the star of the show is Mike Ploog. He's long been one of the Marvel/DC guys I feel got overlooked. I think ultimately he's library of work just isn't big enough to rank him among the greats. But his work on Kull and Man-Thing are wonderful. I need to seek out more of his stuff.
A little more (okay, a lot more) fantasy than I tend to like, but it's hard for me to dislike such a lovely and enchanting story. Between Baum's beguiling tale and Ploog's delightful art, there's just nothing wrong here...unless you're a Grinch.
