CAVERN OF CLUES by David Glover is a mystery wrapped in a puzzle for young adventurers 8-12 years of age. Armed only with a map and basic math skills, readers must negotiate their way from one challenge to another in their quest to discover the buried treasure of the fearsome pirate Black Beard. Solve each puzzle correctly, and the reader moves forward through the story. Make a mistake, and the reader will find an explanation of what probably went wrong before being sent back to try again.

This is one in the Math Quest series of books designed to encourage and develop math skills in an entertaining format. Colorful illustrations paired with a lively text draws the reader into the story. A glossary of Calculation Words explains terms and demonstrates methods to provide support for readers on a variety of topics from addition to percentages.
Not every reader will become a math whiz, but they will discover that math can be fun even when it's also a challenge which is a great confidence booster for reluctant mathematicians.

Šī ir otrā grāmata no sērijas - tikpat aizraujoša izklaide ar 10 gadīgu jaunekli kā pirmā (un manā gadījumā iespēja būt foršajai tantei). Taču šajā gan ir vairāk matemātikas, visu laiku jāreizina un jādala. Un ir skaidrs, ka tikai dīvaini apzinīgs desmitgadnieks to arī darītu, nevis vienkārši šķirtu minot (jo par nepareizu šķīrienu jau nekas nav) - tāpēc tiešām iesaku šo lasīt kopā.

I couldn’t really tell what this story is about because the story wasn’t very clear. I decided I didn’t want to finish reading it because there is too much math. There is so much math that I couldn’t get far enough into the story to figure out what the story was. This book is for masterminds.

My arithmetic-averse nine year old was very motivated to work her way through this book, which focuses mainly on multiplication with some other operations thrown in. The story was fun and the maths fairly well integrated into the story.

My main caveat is that the writers of the book seem to be expecting readers to use algorithms rather than thinking problems through. The 'answers' suggest ways of solving problems that may follow conventional rules but are not necessarily the most efficient way of tackling the question. For example, a puzzle that involves figuring out whether 16 barrels of 3.5 kilos of gunpowder is more than 24 kg in total, the answer assumes you should multiply 16 by 3.5. However my daughter and I found it quicker and easier to see that two barrels would have 7 kg, and skip count in 7s until we overshot 24. There were other pages with similar assumptions.

However, this did not really impact on our reading of the book. There are no specific directions so you are free to use whatever techniques make most sense to you.

We are hoping to get the other books next!

Käyttäisin mielelläni opetuksessa ja luku-jujuina, mutta onhan näitä ihan helevetillisen hankala oikeasti lukea eikä päätä eikä häntää sinänsä kirjallisesti ole. Tykkään kuitenkin jotenkin ideasta, sellaisesta "puuhakirjasta lukeville".

Kelpo matikkapähkinä, tekee kyllä matematiikasta mielenkiintoista. Ikäsuositus noin 10 vuotta, matematiikasta pitää ymmärtää lukujonoja, prosentteja, murtolukuja ja neliölukuja. Tehtäviä helpottaa se, että aina on kaksi vaihtoehtoa, joista valita oikea. Mysteerien museo oli näistä kahdesta kyllä vähän parempi.

My daughter (8) received this in her Literati box and was instantly obsessed. She'd work on it while eating her cereal before school, in bed at nightime, and any free moment in between. A few of the concepts like double digit multiplication were advanced but she understood the concepts to arrive at the answers. She had so much fun with this book!
