Unfortunately, this book was nothing like its predecessor, Finishing Well. I felt the author was drawing his own conclusions from scripture to fit what he wanted to say about succession.

Last year, a few of us from church did Finishing Well as a group study. We went through it chapter by chapter, summarizing each and having fruitful discussions.

This year, when we started this book, we knew something was off. Not only was the author making his own conclusions based on assumptions, but at times, he even contradicted himself.

At one point, we essentially abandoned the book during our discussions and focused solely on the scripture passages, just to ensure there were no misinterpretations.

The need for leaders to plan their succession is a critical aspect of ending their journey well. This applies not only to work but also to our family and spiritual life. David through this book brings together 12 concepts based on biblical characters from the Old and New Testament that speak to the concept of succession and ending one’s race well. It is not only about character and competence but the realization that who you really belong to that defines your legacy.

I was blessed to take a couple of classes with Pastor David at BGST in its first year in Singapore. When I saw this book, I decided to read it. The principles laid out are very helpful, even if I'm still mid-career. Having a mentoring culture is still new among minority and UPG peoples, so there is much wisdom to be gleaned from this book's pages.
