Guri and Gura

Rate this book

I couldn’t finish this book on my own so I made Tomo read it to me at bedtime. Highly recommend! But we have concerns over the mechanical safety standards shown in the twist ending. Looking forward to a sequel on automotive engineering.

I think the funniest part of the story is Guri and Gura make the egg car on the last page. In real life, you can't put the wheels on the car and connect the lights and seats and steering wheel. How do you open that egg and cut it like that shape? How do the wheels turn, and how do the lights light up? Also, the egg is not very clean, and you need to wash that car, but how do you wash it? And we don't have that kind of stove if we make a cake, we need a super duper big stove. This story is not real, but I still really like it, because that car is very funny.

This is a fun book about friendship and cooperation. Our girls were born in Japan (Okinawa) and we read as much children's literature by Japanese writers and about Japan as we could. It's a good book to read aloud.

This is the story of two mice who find a giant egg and use it to bake a sponge cake for all creatures of the forest.

What do you think they do with the eggshell afterwards? (surprise)

I want to hear this read aloud in the original Japanese. I bet it rhymes.

A childhood favourite, added it as a joke to my 2021 reading challenge list. But why is a picture book “not allowed” for a reading challenge? Guess will have to read a “proper” book by a Japanese author to tick that off my list...

I read a picture book called Guri and Gura. The story of how Guri and Gura found a big egg in the forest and made a sponge cake with everyone. No matter how many times I read it, my heart felt warm.

The process from finding the big egg to baking the sponge cake was so exciting that I felt like I was on an adventure with them. In particular, I couldn't stop turning the pages to see how Guri and Gura were going to overcome such a difficult situation. I couldn't stop turning the pages to see how the gurgling and gurgling would get over the pinch.

I think the best part of this picture book is that it teaches us the importance of cooperation. Everyone works together to carry a large egg, grill the castella, and then eat it together. Deep friendships and warm hearts are depicted in this simple story.

The author, Rieko Nakagawa's kind words and Yuriko Omura's warm pictures grab the reader's heart and keep them going. In particular, turning the pages while imagining the sweet aroma of the castella spread throughout the forest is a blissful time.

Children who read this picture book will surely develop a kind heart that can get along with anyone. Even adults can remember important things by reading this picture book in their busy lives.

If you have not read Guri to Gura yet, please give it a try. I am sure you will be fascinated by the world of Guri to Gura.

It's ok, the book isn’t that interesting. After all, it's a children's book. It's about these two squirrels who live in the forest and love to cook. After the introduction, they start finding supplies for dinner. In the end, the two squirrels and many more animals have a big feast altogether.

I came across the title of this book in "What You Are Looking for Is in the Library". It's apparently a popular children's book in Japan.

It's a cute story about two field mice who come across a giant egg and make a huge cake and share it.
