About the author

Lung Ying-tai (traditional Chinese: 龍應台; simplified Chinese: 龙应台; pinyin: Lóng Yìngtái) (born February 13, 1952 in Kaohsiung) is a Taiwanese essayist and cultural critic. She occasionally writes under the pen name 'Hu Meili' (胡美麗). Lung's poignant and critical essays contributed to the democratization of Taiwan and as the only Taiwanese writer with a column in major mainland Chinese newspapers, she is an influential writer in Mainland China.

Lung was the Minister of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of China in 2012-2014.

七月一日看了序言之后就再没翻这本书，今天花了一下午看完全书。

「比作『女人』更重要的，是作一个纯粹而完整的『人』」

「『美丽的权利』是有意识地争取来的…卡哇伊是要付出代价的。」

「我写文章的时候并不自觉是『女性』，而是一个没有性别之有头脑的『人』在分析事情」

这本书收录了龙应台1985-1994年间的文章。书里的观点现在看来不再新鲜。用今天的话说，Women’s rights are human rights. 但我佩服的是她在30年前就已经想到了这些。

深刻反省：这个月在今天之前不但一本书都没读，连电影电视剧都没看几部。古人云「玩猫丧志」果然乃大彻大悟之言。

真正是後知後覺，竟然不知道龍應台教授另有一個筆名胡美麗，直至拜讀了這本「美麗的權利」。那幽默的遣詞用語，諷刺時弊卻不尖酸，令人看得嘻哈絕倒拍案驚奇。 唯獨是書中所提及「淡水快車謀殺案」，這類型小說其實並不膚淺，我正是看這類通俗文學長大的，所以為阿嘉莎克莉絲蒂作平反，龍應台教授請接納。

It took me two days to finish this book? I read this in Taipei.

It's a compilation of 龍應台's writing as 胡美麗 on women's rights. Women had such a hard time in Taiwan! It wasn't too long ago when women were expected to quit their jobs after they got married. And I remember this heartbreaking essay detailing a woman's struggle with her husband and family's expectation of her to take on all the housework. That was fucking insane and difficult to read.

Very uplifting and exciting to have her cheering for us. Explains why she was so supportive when I met her after the Golden Horse awards about two years ago. She was the best, telling me to work hard and continue to do great. I could literally feel her support and her desire that I succeed. It was amazing. The best celebrity encounter I've had my entire life.

The articles were written decades ago but they still carry a lot of truth about gender issues in today's societies in the east and the west. It's really frustrating to see that the world has not progressed much in sexual equality and many bias are as deeply entrenched as ever. More books of this type are needed to wake up women who don't see how inequality has been victimizing them.
