About the author

Sir Ramanbhai Nilkanth, R.B (Gujarati: રમણભાઈ નીલકંઠ; 1868–1928) was a noted author of Gujarati literature. He was also the Mayor of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. He belonged to "Pandit-Yug" or "Goverdhan-Yug". His father, Mahipatram Rupram Nilkanth, was also an author and social worker. He wrote two classics of Gujarati literature namely "Bhadram-Bhadra" and "Rai no Parvat". Ramanbhai Nilkanth– was a renowned short story writer and his wife –Lady Vidyagauri – was one of the state’s first women graduates. His daughter, Vinodinee Neelkanth, was perhaps the first Gujarati woman to get a post-graduate degree from the US. Though she was not a feminist in strictest sense, she perhaps is the first Gujarati novelist to have written a column for 40 years in a Gujarati daily – Gujarat Samachar. This noted philanthropist and humourist writer, Ramanbhai Nilkanth became the first Hon. Secretary. of the Ahmedabad Red Cross founded in 1923.

If we name top 10 best book available in Gujarati literature, I think Bhadrambhadra (ભદ્રંભદ્ર) by Ramanbhai Neelkanth will make it in the list for sure. And if we talk about one of the best book in humor / black humor / sarcasm genre, I don't think anyone can beat Bhadrambhadra.

Story was written about 1890 era of India, where Britishers & few social activist were trying to remove some centuries old orthodox traditions. Author had created a wonderful character 'Bhadrambhadra', who considered himself as self-proclaimed savior of society against activist. Bhadrambhadra had a follower named Ambaram, who trust Bhadrambhara and his logic unquestionably.

A must read for all Gujarati.

It's the first satire/comedy of Gujarati(Hindu,India) language..
It makes fun of traditional ultraconservative customs...
It's a masterpiece..
I love this book..
It was written in an era when you couldn't even think/speak against such conservatism..55/5 stars..

Just completed re-reading this satirical novel written 121 years ago.

Bhandrambhadra, 'an immortal figure in Gujarati fiction' as Kanhaiyalal Munshi referred him, is an orthodox Brahmin who is opposed to reforms in the then Hindu society.

He opposes widow remarriages, women education, intercaste marriages; and supports child marriage, untouchability, superstitions, astrology et al.

A jingoistic, Bhadrambhadra is of opinion that anything which is Aryan is good and Western is bad. And then the story goes on with humour.

With each passing chapter, it becomes somewhat weak and quite confusing. The book, basically an attack on ultraconservative and orthodox people, is a refreshing and humorous read.

ભદ્રંભદ્ર એટલે વિકૃત બુદ્ધિ વાળો જળ કેરેક્ટર. બુદ્ધિનો એક ટકા પણ ઉપયોગ નહીં કરનારો સંકુચિતા વાળો, ખુદને મહાપુરુષ ગણાવનાર માણસ! માત્ર 'સુધારાવાળા' નામને લીધે કઈપણ સ્વીકાર ન કરે અને મનઘડત 'શાસ્ત્રીય પુરાવા' આપતો ફરે. પાછો ખુદ સ્વીકારે કે શાસ્ત્રોનો જેવો કહો એવો અર્થ કાઢી આપું!
ગમે ત્યાં લવારા કરવાનું ચાલુ કરીને કેવી કેવી તકલીફમાં પડે છે એ નવલકથામાં જોવા મળે છે. લોકો એને મુર્ખ બનાવી ચાલ્યા જાય, માર મારી એના ઠઠ્ઠા કરે ને એ એમાં માન શોધવા ફાંફા મારે. માત્ર ભદ્રંભદ્ર એક જ નહીં, એની સાથે એનાજેવા જ વલણ વાળો સમાજ પણ નવલકથામાં ચિતરાયો છે.

ઠઠ્ઠા માટે અને એ સમાજની ગંદકી પરનો ઉપહાસ જોવા નવલકથાનાં બે પ્રકરણ વાંચવા જેવા છે 'વંદાવધ' અને 'નાતનો જમણવાર'.

લગભગ 100 વર્ષ પહેલાં લખાયેલી આ નવલકથાનાં ભદ્રંભદ્રો આજે પણ દેખાય છે, એ વાંચતા વાંચતા જ તાદ્દશ થાય એવું છે. એ શીખવાનું કે આવા ભદ્રંભદ્રોના હાલ શું થાય છે. ને કેવા કેવા ઠગ, પોતાના ફાયદા, પ્રસિદ્ધિ અને ઠઠ્ઠા માટે કેવા આવાં બ્રૅઈનવોશ માણસોનો ઉપયોગ કરી જાય છે.

આશરે સવાસો વર્ષ પૂર્વે લખાયેલું પ્રહસન જુનવાણી વિચારધારા અને આધુનિકતા નો સંઘર્ષ અને તે માંથી ઉભું થતું ફારસ આજે પણ એટલું જ તાજું અને લાક્ષણિક છે.. જમાના થી દશકો આગળ નીકળી વિચારવા અને આલેખવા શ્રી રમણભાઈ નીલકંઠ નવી પ્રશંસા અને વંદન છે..
