Your Golden Retriever Puppy Month by Month provides new pet owners with everything you need to know and do at each stage of development to make sure your playful, energetic puppy grows into a happy, healthy, and well-adjusted companion. A veterinarian, a trainer, and a breeder team up to cover all the questions new owners tend to have, and many they don’t think to ask, * What to ask the breeder before bringing your puppy home. * Which vaccinations your puppy needs and when to get them. * How to make potty training as smooth (and quick) as possible. * What to do when your puppy cries at night. * Why and how to crate train your puppy. * When socialization should happen and how to make sure it does. * When your puppy is ready to learn basic commands—like Sit, Stay, and Come—and the best way to teach them. * When and how to go about leash training. * How much exercise your puppy needs to stay physically and mentally healthy. * What, how much, and when to feed your puppy to give him the nutrition he needs without the extra weight he doesn’t. * When your puppy is ready for obedience training and how to make sure it works. * How and how often to bathe your puppy, brush his coat, clip his nails, and brush his teeth. * How to know when a trip to the vet is needed. * What causes problem behaviors, when to expect them, and how to correct them.
A great resource! The monthly descriptions of golden retriever behavior were spot on. Did I follow everything this books says, no but it still has a lot of great information and insight into puppy growth, health, and behavior.
A complete and easy guide for Golden Retriever owners (or to be owners)
This book covers every step an owner should take during the first 12 months of his Golden Retriever puppy. It’s so comprehensive and easy to understand that you wish it continued to up to 24 months of age (or more). I’m thankful for having read this book as it turned our home into a place of complete joy with our lovely Skye. I recommend this book to all people who are currently considering bringing this amazing breed home soon or have her already blessing their home with her fun, friendly, and energetic spirit!
This book has been a very helpful reference for me to be able to open up every now and then as I raise my first Golden Retriever ever. Everything is explained well, it's easy to read, and it gives me a lot of peace of mind and answers questions I didn't even know I had.
American based so a lot of stuff wasn't relevant due to me being in UK. However there is some really good advice and I'd still recommend a GR owner to read it.
This is an interesting book with lots of tips and a really readable format. It’s also visually appealing and laid out very well. The different sections on each week/month was excellent. It took some getting used to that the authors flipped between referring to your puppy as “he” and “she” in addition to the breeder, the vet, etc. Sometimes I had trouble figuring out which “she” was meant - the puppy or the person! 😋 I liked that this book gave background about how important the puppy’s first few weeks are with mum. A lot of Golden books focus specifically on six weeks onward (bringing your puppy home and onward). I really appreciated the sections on the breeder responsibilities and how to vet breeders.
My one problem is that it’s geared toward an American audience. There are loads of governing bodies, resources and agencies that can help you with your puppy and determine bloodlines, etc but may not be super helpful if you’re from anywhere else.
The readability of this book is what makes it a winner. It’s really easy to understand and is written for everyone. Definitely worth checking out.
