Based on a 6-year study of 500 of the world’s biggest brands, Winning the Battle for Relevance seeks to answer the “What separates the enduring from the endangered?” As businesses, industries, and revenue models continue to be disrupted at an alarming rate, leaders would do well to learn from the mistakes of fallen brands such as Borders, Kodak, and Blockbuster―lest they fall into the same trap. Better still, Winning the Battle for Relevance highlights what every organization and institution can learn from enduringly successful brands in order to win the battle for relevance in the turbulent years ahead.
I bought this book after hearing the author speak at a conference and I'm only just getting around to reading it now. While much of the material was discussed at the conference, it was still a good reminder of some important business techniques. It's interesting to see which if the case study companies have survived, thrived or died since the book was written.
I think I wrote notes and copied quotes from almost every chapter in this book! It's one of the best business books I've read and I would recommend it for anyone in a position of leadership or management in any type of organisation (large, small, not-for-profit, corporate, government etc). In fact, I'd probably recommend it for anyone regardless of your position in your organisation. You'll still learn a lot from this book that you can apply where you are now.
The whole book is absolutely full of case studies and examples from all different types of organisations and industries. It also offers reflection questions to help apply each new learning wherever your organisation is in its life cycle.
I have never been so inspired from a book to literally come up with new ideas and strategies for myself, my clients and other organisations I'm involved with.
